Portraits in Oil

Hello everyone!

This year I am exploring doing portrait exercises in oil.

Dieses Jahr fing ich an, Portrait Studien in Oelmalerei zu probieren.

I bought a whole bunch of courses at the great course site domestika.org. I highly recommend domestika, the courses can be done at your own pace, and are very informative and well-designed, and a great price!

Ich kaufte etliche Kurse durch die tolle Website domestika.org. Ich kann deren Kurse hoechst empfehlen, Ihr koennt sie in einem zeitlichen Ablauf, der Euch selber passt, durchmachen, sie sind sehr informativ und gut gestaltet, und haben einen tollen Preis!

My first one was with German painter Torsten Wolber (here's his Website). I liked his approach to painting with fresh happy high-key colors. Below is my first oil portrait following his course.

Mein erster Kurs war mit dem deutschen Maler Torsten Wolber (hier seine Website). Ich fand es toll, wie er sich dem Oelmalen mit freudigen, hellen Farben naehert. Folgend mein erstes Oelportrait, das ich waehrend seinem Kurs gemalt habe.

Anyway, on the left is my first attempt at this portrait with the traditional Zorn palette (Black, white, yellow ochre, cad red) 2 years ago. It's kind of muted and darkish (not that my application of these wonderful colors is perfect). On the right is my second attempt with the fresher colors used nowadays (and better likeness). I used White, Burnt Umber, Rose Madder, Cobalt Blue, Cad Yellow Med. I love how much fresher the colors and fleshtones are, and it's a joy to paint. The background was actually the hardest, as you can see in the progression shots below.

Links ist mein erster Versuch vor 2 Jahren mit der traditionellen und populaeren Farbwahl von Anders Zorn (schwarz, weiss, Ocker, rot). Es ist ein bisschen dunkel und gedaempft). Auf der rechten Seite ist mein jetziger Versuch mit den moderneren frischeren Farben. Ich benutzte Weiss, Umber, Rot, Kobaltblau, und Cadmium Gelb. Ich finde die Farbwahl viel frischer, und es macht auch mehr Spass, das zu malen. Eigentlich war der Hintergrund das schwierigste, wie ihr hier unten seht.

Ja, das Original hat diesen miesen Ausdruck, und ja, ich habe ihr rechtes Auge ein bisschen zu hoch gemalt.

All studies are about 12"x16" on gesso'd matboard and take about 2-3 sessions for a total of 2-3 hours.

Alle Studien sind 31cm x 41cm auf Karton, und wurden in 2-3 Sessions in 2-3 Stunden gemalt.

Portraits, Drawings and Loomis

Hello! It's me again!

Hallo, ich schon wieder!

One of my first portraits in 2021

While I fell in love with pen and ink drawings during the initial Covid lockdowns in 2019 and 2020, I started exploring portrait drawing in 2021 and 2022. I used the traditional method of drawing the dark parts (shadows) in graphite/pencil, and the highlights in white chalk on toned paper. 

Ich habe euch ja schon erzaehlt, dass ich waehrend der Covid Lockdowns in 2019 und 2020 mich total in die Tuschezeichnungen verliebt habe, fing ich nun in 2021 und 2022 an, mich dem klassischen Zeichnen von Portraits zu widmen. Ich gebrauchte die traditionelle Methode, auf mitteldunklem Papier die Schatten in Bleistift, und die Highlights in weisser Kreide zu zeichnen.

I then developed a 9-week class for classically drawing the portrait and figure, using the Loomis method. The students at the Artists' Workshop loved it and my classes were always full with waiting lists.

Ich entwickelte einen 9-woechigen Unterricht dafuer, mit der Loomis Methode. Die Schueler in meinem oertlichen Kunstverein waren auch ganz begeistert und meine Klassen waren immer voll, manchmal mit Warteliste!

The Loomis method divides the head into 3 equal portions, starting from a circle, and makes it quite easy to draw a portrait freehand. We also explored how to hold and sharpen a pencil, the correct shading methods, and went on to drawing some nudes/figures.

Die Loomis Methode faengt mit einem Kreis an, und teilt den Kopf in 3 gleiche Teile an, und macht es somit ziemlich leicht, ein Portait frei zu zeichnen. Wir erkundedeten auch, wie man einen Bleistift richtig haelt und spitzt, die besten Schattierungsmethoden, und gingen dann darauf ueber, auch Figuren und Akte zu zeichnen.

The 4 portraits above I did in a zoom class with Artist Student League in NYC. The model shown bottom left was sitting for us for hours. I did the first two portraits in the traditional method, and the 2 on the bottom with sharpie, one real quick for values, the other as a caricature exercise.

Diese 4 Portraits sind ein einem Zoom-Unterricht mit einem Live Model gezeichnet. Unten links ein Photo des Modells, die 2 oben in traditioneller Weise, unten mit Schwarzstift ganz schnell fuer Tonwerte und auch eine Uebung als Karikatur.

Hopefully everybody recognizes this lady.

Jazmine's Portrait habe ich in meinem Unterricht viel benutzt, so ein tolles Bild.
