Me again! Ich schon wieder!
The 9th Annual NSB Plein Air Paintout commenced in late October, and I finally have time to write about it! It was very successful for everybody.
I was the cover artist, so the painting from last year that was picked for the cover was displayed everywhere... on brochures, schedules, posters, and those gigantic banners throughout town! How cool....
Der 9. Jaehrliche New Smyrna Beach Plein Air Paintout war im Oktober, und nun habe ich endlich Zeit, darueber zu schreiben. Es war ein erfolgreicher Event.
Ich war die Hauptkuenstlerin/Cover Artist, und deswegen war mein Gemaelde, das letztes Jahr fuer das Hauptbild gewaehlt wurde, ueberall zu sehen.... auf Broschueren, Posters, und diese riesigen Flaggen, die an etlichen Stellen in der Stadt aufgestellt waren. So toll!

We had 23 artists participating, most from Florida, but also out of state. We all know each other and it's great to get together for such a wonderful event and see old friends to paint with. I discovered that I have participated every year since the first event in 2011!

Wir hatten 23 Kuenstler, die meisten von Florida, die an dem Event teilnahmen. Da es schon das 9. Jahr ist, kennen sich die meisten, und fanden es supertoll, mit alten Freunden wieder zu malen. Ich fand heraus, dass ich seit dem ersten Event in 2011 jedes Jahr wieder eingeladen wurde und mitgemacht habe!

We had pretty good weather, but it was very humid on most mornings. The wet room/gallery was at our Artists Workshop where I teach and volunteer, right behind Marine Discovery Center. Both groups organized the event and benefitted from the proceeds for their various fundraising and community events - a great cause.

Wir hatten ziemlich gutes Wetter, jedoch war es am Morgen immer sehr sehr schwuel. Die Gallerie, wo die (noch nassen) Gemaelde aufgehaengt wurden, war im Artists Workshop, wo ich viel Freiwilligenarbeit mache und auch unterrichte, gleich hinter dem Marine Discovery Center. Beide Gruppen organisierten den Event und bekamen dann den Profit zu fuer ihre eigenen Events in der Gemeinde - immer eine gute Sache. Die Kuenstler bekommen, wie immer, 50% der Verkaeufe. Im Durchschnitt werden Bilder so zw. $300 und $1000 verkauft.

Since I was the cover artist, I was interviewed by the local newspaper and you can click here to see part of this interview on youtube. In addition I was included in 2 newspapers in their printed articles!

Da ich das Covergirl war, wurde ich von einer der lokalen Zeitungen interviewt, und hier koennt ihr klicken, um ein Teil meines Interviews als Video zu sehen. Ausserdem waren dann zwei Photos und ein grosser Artikel von mir in 2 Zeitungen!

Painting was fun, and I did a couple of switches to Pen and Ink artwork which was very well received by my fellow artists and the public. I sold almost all the paintings on my wall!

Das taegliche Malen machte Spass, und ich malte dieses Mal nicht nur in Oel, sondern ein paar mit der Tuschezeichnung und Aquarellwasch drueber, was sehr gut angekommen ist. Fast alle meine Gemaelde auf meiner Wand fanden einen Kaeufer!

We had evening paintouts, a sunset gathering where the public could see us all in action at JB's Fishcamp, and several other new events. For the sponsors and patrons we had a private event where 5 selected artists did a progressive painting in a little over 1 hour, that was then auctioned off by the very talented Emcee (and fellow artist) Michelle Held. Natalia Andreeva started the underpainting, then Joe Palmerio took over on the sky, I did a bit of the boardwalk and railings, then Charles Dickinson on the greenery, and Manon Sander finished it off! The reference photo was graciously supplied by a local photographer who was honored to see it painted live! The resulting 22"x28" oil painting fetched $1000 in a raucous auction before it was even finished!

Wir hatten ein paar tolle Festivitaeten, wo das Publikum zuschauen konnte. Ein paar Maltreffen am Abend, und eines an einem Restaurant am Fluss, wo wir dann den Sonnenuntergang malten. Fuer die Sponsoren hatten wir einen privaten Abend, wo unter anderem 5 ausgewaehlte Kuenstler ein progressives Gemaelde in einer knappen Stunde malten. Natalia fing an (malte es eigentlich fast fertig haha), dann malte Joe hauptsaechlich den Himmel, ich malte den Boardwalk und die architukturalen Dinge, dann Charles die Planzen und Baeume, und Manon trug dann die letzten tollen Tuepfelchen auf! Michelle unterhielt das Publikum mit Witzen und Tatsachen, und half, das fertige Gemaelde fuer $1000 in der Auktion unter den Mann zu bringen.

My turn to paint and entertain.

The event also hosted one or two demos each day, where the public was invited to sit and watch, learn and ask questions. Michelle Held started off the week with her demo on painting a live owl that was sitting very patiently for her. I was in the audience and did a quick pen and ink sketch of the scene.

Waehrend der Woche hatten wir auch ein paar Demonstrationen, wo das Publikum eingeladen war, mitzusitzen und Fragen zu stellen. Michelle Held fing mit einer tollen Demo an, wo sie eine lebendinge Eule in Oel malte. Ich war auch im Publikum und zeichnete die Szene, die dann gleich am naechsten Tag einen Kaeufer fand.

My demo on how to do a value study and what and how to edit an overwhelming scene on location was well received, I had over 30 people in the audience! I love doing demos and got great feedback on my teaching. There was also a photo of me in the newspaper.

Ich durfte auch eine Demo machen, ich erklaerte und zeigte, wie man eine Studie zeichnet, wenn man draussen vor einer Szene steht, die viel zu viel beinhaltet. Ich hatte ueber 30 Leute im Publikum! Ich demonstriere und erklaere gerne, und ich bekam viel positiven Feedback danach. Austin filmte mich, und ein Bild von mir in action kam dann auch in die Zeitung.

On the last Saturday we held a community quickdraw, where amateur artists could try their hand on a timed event (2 hours only) and enter the resulting painting in a competition for prizes. I was one of the judges and there was some really great artwork! Event the ones who didn't win had fun and I think everybody found respect for the plein air artists, who really have only 2-3 hours to do a painting (as the sun moves drastically in that time frame and changes the whole scene).

Am letzten Tag (Samstag) fand der Gemeinde-Quickdraw statt, wo sich lokale Hobbymaler daran machen konnten, in genau 2 Stunden eine Szene in einem Park zu malen. Wir hatten 4 Juroren, wo ich auch eine war, und es waren einige ausgezeichnete Gemaelde darunter. Selbst die Maler, die nichts gewannen, hatten Spass und konnten sehen, wie schwer es eigentlich ist, draussen in einem knappen Zeitraum was schoenes zu produzieren. So wie wir 23 Kuenstler es die ganze Woche machten, denn die Sonne steht ja in 2 Stunden total woanders, und das aendert die Szene dann sehr.

The grand finale was on Saturday evening at our studios that looked simply awesome, transformed into a high-caliber gallery! There was a great buffet, wine and drinks, live music, and lots of sales! My painting that was bought last year by MDC and was the cover art was auctioned off and fetched a great price for the event!
Das grosse Finale war dann am Samstag Abend in unseren Studios/Galerie, die echt toll aussah mit all den schoenen Bildern und  begeisterten Leuten und Kuenstlern. Es gab ein tolles Buffet, Wein und Live Musik, und ein Haufen Kaeufe! Mein Gemaelde, das ueberall zu sehen war und letztes Jahr von MDC gekauft wurde, wurde nochmal versteigert und brachte wieder viel Geld ein!

Quick Draw and Commission

Hello everybody!
First off, thanks to everybody who took advantage of my Christmas Sale, I am so glad that so many of my paintings will be a surprise under the tree and grace someone's walls now!!!

erstmal moechte ich mich bei allen bedanken, die an meinem Kunst-Sale teilgenommen haben. Ich bin so happy, dass so viele meiner Gemaelde unter einem Weihnachtsbaum liegen und bald andere Waende als meine verzieren!

Yesterday was the rescheduled QuickDraw event in New Smyrna Beach from the Canaveral Paintout back in October. Everybody could participate, and we even had artists from way out of town there! We had 16 artists who had to pay a registration fee that went towards the "Raise The Roof" Project of the Artists Workshop. At 9am sharp we all started our paintings around the sunny and warm Riverside Park in New Smyrna Beach. Exactly 2 hours later the horn tooted and we had to stop painting. We all finished our paintings in this short time, though.
Gestern war unser QuickDraw, der wegen des Hurrikans im Oktober auf heute verlegen wurde. Jeder konnte teilnehmen, und wir hatten sogar auswaertige Kuenstler da! Es waren insgesamt 16 Kuenstler, die alle eine Teilnahmegebuer zahlen mussten, die dann dem neuen Dach unseres Malclubs zustande kam, was nun endlich repariert ist, aber immer noch abbezahlt wird... Um genau 9 Uhr morgens fingen wir alle an, im Park in der herrlich warmen Sonne zu malen. Genau 2 Stunden spaeter wurde die Sirene geblasen, und alle mussten mit dem Malen aufhoeren. Wir konnten jedoch alle unsere Werke fertigstellen in dieser kurzen Zeit.

This was the scene I selected. I really liked the palm trees and the slanted shadows from the window awnings on the bottom left.

Dies ist die Szene, die mich ansprach. Ich fand die Gruppe der Palmen toll, und die schraegen Schatten der Rolladen des unteren Fensters.

Here is a quick progress collage of my painting which I was very happy with. A bunch of palm trees catching the morning sun in a side yard just across the street. I started on a white panel that I quickly toned in a warm yellow of acrylics. While that dried I squeezed out my paints and then could start shortly after. My process is the same as usual, and I had just enough time to finish the painting. Andrea, who had some private lessons with me recently, was painting alongside me, another house in the other direction. She did really good, considering this was a real tight time restraint for a beginner!
Hier eine kurze Collage meiner Gemaeldes, das ich auf weiss anfing, wie es in den Regeln hiess. Ich rieb schnell ein bisschen warmes Gelb von Acrylic auf die Leinwand, und waehrend ich meine Palette vorbereitete und meine Oelfarben ausdrueckte, trocknete diese Unterfarbe schnell, und ich konnte innerhalb 5 Minuten mit dem Malen anfangen. Meinen Malprozess kennt ihr ja schon. Andrea, meine Privatschuelerin, malte nebe mir, in die andere Richtung, und obwohl es erst ihr 3. Plein Air Gemaelde war, und auch noch unter Zeitdruck, war sie echt zufrieden, und auch ich!

A minivan parked right in front of my scene towards the end, but I was already finished with that part. That's why it's so important to make an initial sketch, lay in your shadows right away, and paint on your canvas overall instead of finishing one part and then move to the next one!

Ein Minivan parkte direkt vor meiner Szene am Ende, doch ich war schon fertig, so war es also nicht schlimm. Deswegen ist es immer wichtig, eine schnelle Skizze am Anfang zu machen, gleich die Schatten einzulegen, und ueberall gleichzeitig am Bild zu malen (nicht erst den Hintergrund, und dann vielleicht das Haus, und dann den Vordergrund)...

After a quick cleaning up, we took our paintings still on the easels to the park's gazebo where everybody who was present at the park at the time was allowed to vote for "People's Choice". Distinguished local artist Morgan Samuel Price was the judge and awarded First and Second Prizes which included cash. While I did not win anything, Morgan talked to me personally afterwards, and it was a great event and a lot of fun! And I got another nice-looking painting out of it, alongside with great camaraderie! Here are some of the paintings in detail.
Wir hatten ein paar Minuten Zeit, aufzuraeumen, und dann wurden die Bilder auf den Staffeleien am Gazebo aufgestellt, wo dann jeder, der zufaellig im Park war, fuer sein Lieblingsbild waehlen konnte, und eine sehr anerkannte Malerin (Morgan Samuel Price) gab dann die Preise fuer 1. und 2. Platz aus. Ich gewann leider nichts, doch Morgan sprach dann persoenlich mit mir ueber mein Bild, das ihr auch sehr gefallen hatte. Es war ein toller Event und viel Spass. Und ich bin total zufrieden und stolz auf mein Bild! Hier noch ein paar Bilder mit allen Werken...

IN OTHER NEWS:
I finished a commission for a dog portrait as a Christmas gift. I did it in the modern whimsical style, which I love and has so much impact. Hope the customer's relative will like it!
Noch eine Neuigkeit:
Vor einigen Tagen vollendete ich eine Kommission fuer ein Hundeportrait fuer ein Weihnachtsgeschenk. Ich malte es in meinem modernen und "drolligen" Stil. Ich hoffe, dass der Onkel meiner Kundin, fuer den es bestimmt ist, es auch mag!

Deleon Springs and Mexico!

Hello again!
3 weeks ago I was invited again to act as a judge at the spring festival in Deleon Springs. They have a wonderful community spirit, a great setting, and really neat arts and crafts. Local artist Jan Obendorfer was my fellow judge, and we had a hard time selecting first place. There were many cool pieces we've never seen before.

vor 3 Wochen wurde ich wieder eingeladen, in Deleon Springs als Juror Preise fuer tolle Kunstwerke auszugeben, beim alljaehrlichen Kunst- und Handwerks-Fest dort. Es war ein toller Tag unter den grossen Eichen, und meine Co-Jurorin Jan Obendorfer stimmte mir zu, dass es ziemlich schwer war, die verschiedenen Kunstwerke fuer den 1., 2. und 3. Preis auszusuchen... es waren so viele tolle Sachen zu sehen!

Last weekend Austin and I went with his work partners and their wives to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. What a wonderful place! I couldn't get over the rocky beaches, crashing waves, sea lions and dolphins, beautiful blooms in the rich neighborhoods, and dry/arid landscape everywhere else.

Letztes Wochenende waren Austin und ich mit seinen Geschaeftspartnern und deren Frauen in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Was fuer ein toller Ort! Ich kriegte mich nicht mehr mit den felsigen Kuesten und Straenden, den riesengrossen krachenden Wellen, Seeloewen und Delphine, wunderschoene Blumen, wo die reichen Touristen wohnten, und eine total duerre Landschaft und kahle Berge ueberall sonst.

Land's End

Between taking long walks in the neighborhoods, checking out the local market, snorkeling and discovering the beaches around Land's End, I had a bit of time to sketch. The long views are from the rooftop of the house we stayed in, and the last is from the beach near Land's End, the famous landmark at the southern tip of the Baja island.

Austin und ich spazierten viel in der Nachbarschaft herum, erkundeten die lokalen Maerkte, gingen schnorcheln, und besuchten die tollen Straende um Land's End herum. Ich hatte auch Zeit zum skizzieren/malen. Die langen Sichten sind von der Dachterrasse des Hauses, wo wir uebernachteten, und das lezte Gemaelde ist vom Strand bei Land's End, die beruehmte Felsenformation mit dem Bogen, was der suedlichste Punkt der Baja Halbinsel ist.

What a wonderful time and awesome landscape/sights! It's really beautiful there.

Was fuer ein toller Kurzurlaub, es ist wirklich wunderschoen dort!

QuickDraw in Mount Dora

This Saturday I participated in my first QuickDraw, and it was as much fun as I had thought it would be! There were 35 artists and we all had the same setup: a white vase with 3 palm fronds, enveloped by a silky blue-striped cloth (see setup below).
Am Samstag nahm ich an meinem allerersten QuickDraw (Schnelles Malen) teil, und es machte genausoviel Spass, wie ich erwartet hatte. Es waren 35 Kuenstler, und wir mussten alle dasselbe malen: eine weisse Vase mit 3 Palmwedeln, auf einem gestreiften Seidentuch (siehe Photo unten).

After the setup, we all started at 10am to paint, and had 2 hours exactly to paint, without any talking or interaction amongst ourselves or some of the people coming in. At noon brushes needed to be laid down, and after lunch we gathered at the Mt. Dora Center for the Arts that was the organizer/sponsor, where all paintings were lined up against the walls of the gallery (mine is the 1st one in the 3rd row).
Nachdem jeder bereit war, fingen wir alle gemeinsam um 10 Uhr an, zu malen, und nach genau 2 Stunden musste jeder die Pinsel weglegen. Wir durften waehrend der Malzeit nicht miteinander reden. Nach einem kurzen Mittagessen versammelten wir uns in der Galerie des Kunstclubs (Mt. Dora Center for the Arts), wo alle Gemaelde gegen die Wand gelehnt waren (meines ist das erste in der 3. Reihe).

Dies sind fast alle der Gemaelde.

The judges talked about what caught their eye, and some prizes were handed out. I received an honorable mention, and I was very happy.
Die Juroren redeten kurz darueber, welches Gemaelde und warum ihnen ins Auge gestochen war, und dann wurden einige Preise ausgehaendigt. Ich bekam ein blaues Band fuer den vierten Preis, und war wirklich happy.

I really liked painting within a restricted time limit, and seeing everybody's result, because each artist sees something different, and emphasizes different parts, and of course uses a completely different technique, brush strokes and colors. Most of the artists painted in oils, there were a couple of watercolors, some pencil drawings, and the only pastel got first prize.
Es machte wirklich Spass, in einer bestimmten Zeit mit so vielen anderen genau das selbe zu malen, und am Schluss alle Gemaelde zu sehen, wie jeder was anderes in dem Subjekt sieht, wie jeder verschiedene Techniken, Farben, und Pinselstriche benutzt. Die meisten Kuenstler malten in Oel, einige in Aquarell, ein paar als Skizze, und das einzige Pastelbild bekam den ersten Preis.

All around it was a lot of fun, and I would definitely do it again! Here is my painting.
Es war ein tolles Erlebnis, und ich wuerde es auf jeden Fall wieder mitmachen. Hier ist mein Gemaelde.
