How do we know that Wittighausen was "born" in 1060? Well, it was first mentioned in a document on June 22, 1060, when King Henry IV (1056-1106) signed a certificate, in which he conveyed a huge area of land to Bishop Adalbero of Wuerzburg. It describes the area encompassing today's community of Wittighausen. The village of Unterwittighausen was mentioned in 1060 in  this official document, and in the year of 1243 there was mention of "Inferior Witegehusen" (Unterwittighausen), in contrast to "Wittingenhusen superior" (Oberwittighausen). Woher wissen wir, dass Wittighausen in 1060 "geboren" wurde? Nun, es wurde erstmals am 22. Juni 1060 erwaehnt, als König Heinrich IV. (reg. 1056-1106) in Corvey eine Urkunde unterschrieb, in der er Bischof Adalbero von Würzburg (Graf von Lambach, reg. 1045-1085) den Wildbann in einem riesigen Gebiet um die Stadt abtrat. Der Ort Unterwittighausen wurde im Jahre 1060 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt und im Jahre 1243 wird erstmals „Inferior Witegehusen“ (Unterwittighausen) genannt, im Gegensatz zu „Wittingenhusen superior“ (Oberwittighausen). A decade ago, in 2010, the community of Wittighausen celebrated the 950th birthday in a huge way. Throughout the year we had celebrations with a large summer festival, parties, special church services, demos, kids activities, lectures, etc. Wittighausen (with a current population of around 1,630 in 12 square miles) consists of 4 small villages, Unterwittighausen, Oberwittighausen, Poppenhausen and Vilchband. As small as these villages are, they each have their own church, with Oberwittighausen sporting a second chapel that is famous for its rare octogonal architecture (only 3 in the area of Franconia). (My final art thesis in secondary school in Germany dealt with this chapel - and I got an A for it.)

Vor einem Jahrzehnt, in 2010, feierte die Gemeinde Wittighausen den 950. Geburtstag mit Festen, Kirchenfeiern, Umzuegen, Veranstaltungen, etc. Wittighausen hat ca. 1630 Einwohner und besteht aus 4 kleinen Doerfern: Unterwittighausen, Oberwittighausen, Poppenhausen und Vilchband. Natuerlich hat jedes Dort eine Kirche, und noch eine schoene Kapelle in Oberwittighausen, die sehr beruehmt ist, da sie nur eine von 3 oktogonalen Bauten in der Gegend ist. (Ich schrieb meine Abiturarbeit ueber die Sigismund-Kapelle - und bekam eine Eins.)

I was commissioned to paint large oil paintings of each of the 5 churches, which were then turned into postcards for sale. My parents were visiting me the year before here in Florida and were able to take the paintings with them in their suitcases, saving lots of shipping cost!, and since then the originals have been on display in the city hall in Unterwittighausen, steps from where I grew up.

Fuer das Fest wurde ich beauftragt, jede der 5 Kirchen in Oel festzuhalten. Diese Oelgemaelde wurden dann u.a. als Druckpostkarten verkauft. Meine Eltern besuchten mich im Jahr vorher in Florida and konnten dann die Gemaelde in ihren Koffern mitheimbringen, was sehr viel Porto sparte! Nun haengen die Bilder seither im Rathaus in Unterwittighausen!

My cousin Edgar Braun, who still lives in the area, is a graphic designer and publishes lots of small booklets about Wittighausen and its community. He did a whole publication about the festivities in 2010, here is the link. Check it out! (Unfortunately I couldn't visit during that year, so I missed all of the action! Also, disclaimer, the animal on page 27 is NOT native to our area...LOL).

Mein Cousin Edgar Braun, der noch in der Gegend wohnt, ist Grafik Designer und gibt viele Hefte heraus, die ueber Wittighausen und seine interessanten Einwohner, Gebauede und anderem erzaehlen. Er schrieb ein ganzes Buechlein ueber das Fest in 2010, hier kann man's anschauen. Leider konnte ich in dem Jahr Deutschland nicht besuchen, ich verpasste also die ganze Gaudi! Und als kleine Erklaerung fuer meine amerikanischen Freunde: das Tier auf Seite 27 ist nich heimisch... haha.

Will a new brush make your art better?

Hallihallo!
So, I got my first order of the famed Rosemary brushes in my hands. They are handmade in the UK by a small family business, and I had noticed that almost 50% of the professional artists at Forgotten Coast used them. Since the company was present at the event, I could place an order.
Ich habe meine allererste Bestellung der Rosemary brushes bekommen! Sind werden von Hand in einem kleinen Familienbetrieb im United Kingdom hergestellt, und ich habe gemerkt, dass fast die Haelfte aller Kuenstler im Forgotten Coast Event sie benutzen. Da die Firma dort war, habe ich einige gekauft.

Two weeks ago I finally could try some of them in my plein air painting of some boats. My husband played a gig at a local restaurant, and I wandered to the marina/dry dock next door to paint while listening to his music.
Vor zwei Wochen konnte ich dann nun endlich einige von den Pinseln ausprobieren. Mein Mann hatte einen Auftritt mit seiner Band in einem Restaurant, und da es nebendran eine Bootwerkstatt gab, hoerte ich der Musik dann beim Malen zu.

I tried 3 of the brushes in the Evergreen series and so far I like them. They are very soft and springy. Of course the true test comes in the future: do they hold their shape after 10-20 paintings? They sure look beautiful and the sellers give you plenty of personal attention! I will keep you guys posted...
Ich probierte 3 der Pinsel in der Evergreen Serie aus, und bis jetzt sind sie echt toll, sehr weich und federnd. Natuerlich kommt der grosse Test in der Zukunft: halten sie ihre Form auch nach 10-20 Gemaelden? Sie sehen toll aus, und die Verkauefer waren total nett und auf sehr persoenlichen Dienst drauf. Ich werde Euch auf dem Laufenden halten....

Anyway, I had about 1.5 hours before the sun set, so I got right to painting. I guess with the setting sun behind me I inadvertantly punched up the reddish glow in the scene, and I am very satisfied with this little painting.
Nun ja, ich hatte ca. 1.5 Stunden Zeit, bis die Sonne unterging, und ich machte mich gleich ans Malen ran. Ich glaube, dass ich durch die untergehende Sonne ein bisschen mehr Rot/Pink als sonst benutzte, was ich sehr schoen finde in meinem fertigen Gemaelde.

This month I finished two commissions, one another pet portrait. I painted with acrylics on an older panel that I had collaged with various fabric scraps that's why there's quite a bit of texture present. The customer was very satisfied with the result.
Im Juni habe ich auch zwei Kommissionen fertiggemalt, eines war wieder mal ein Hundeportrait. Ich malte ueber ein aelteres Board, auf das ich verschiedene Stoffreste geklebt hatte. Deswegen hat es viel Textur unter den Akrylfarben. Der Kunde war sehr zufrieden mit dem Bild.

Then I did another house portrait in pen and ink with a watercolor wash. This is a house in Texas, and it was a pleasure to paint. The reference photos weren't the best, as the large trees throw quite a bit of shadow over the whole scene, and checking with google maps didn't turn up any satisfying sun/shadow photos either.
Und dann habe ich ein Hausportrait in Tusche mit Aquarellfarben gemalt. Es ist ein Haus in Texas, und hat echt Spass gemacht, auf's Papier zu bannen. Die Referenzphotos waren nicht die besten, da die Baueme im Vordergrund zuviel Schatten ueber die ganze Szene warfen, und als ich auf Google Maps ging, waren da auch keine besseren Photos zu finden.

So the first thing I do for a house commission is figure out the angle to showcase the house. If it's just the house, it becomes a portrait and looks quite boring. If you include a view of the street and the neighboring houses, even ever so slight, it becomes a scene and way more interesting.
So I take some possible angles and do quick sketches of what it might look like and how it should be presented (vertical or horizontal format).
Fuer so eine Kommission fange ich immer damit an, mit den verschiedenen Blickwinkeln zu spielen. Wenn man nur das Haus malt, wird es ein "Portrait" und dadurch ziemlich langweilig. Wenn man die benachbarten Haueser und ein bisschen Strasse mit einzieht, wird es mehr eine "Szene" und viel interessanter.
Deswegen zeichne ich schnell ein paar verschiedene Blickwinkel, um mich besser entscheiden zu koennen, welches Format am besten ist.

Then comes my favorite part! Figuring out the perspective lines. In a commission, you definitely don't want to be off in perspective, everything has to read correctly. I do that in pencil, but still eyeballing it. I then redraw every line in microliner pen.
Dann kommt mein Lieblingsteil! Die Perspektiv-Linien! In einer Kommission will man also wirklich genau die Perspektive herstellen, was ich erst in Bleistift zeichne, ohne Lineal, nur gross schaetzen. Danach zeichne ich alles nochmal mit dem Microliner Stift nach (wasserfeste Tusche).

After that I color the drawing in watercolors. The most detail and the most colorful areas are kept to the commissioned house, while the other parts of the scene are just slightly indicated, as they are not important and should not take away any attention from the main subject. Once the watercolor is done, the drawing lines are usually lost, and I go over them again to make them darker and more pronounced.
Danach fange ich mit den Aquarellfarben an. Die farbfrohesten und detaillierten Stellen werden natuerlich fuer das kommissierte Haus reserviert, waehrend die anderen Stellen nur ein bisschen angedeutet werden, so dass der Anschauer auch wirklich gleich auf das Hauptsubjekt geleitet wird. Durch das Aquarellmalen sind die Tuschelinien meistens ein bisschen verloren gegangen, und ich zeichne sie nochmal nach, um sie dunkler und lebhafter zu machen.

The last part is really fun too, selecting a great color for the mat to match the feel of the painting.

Der letzte Schritt macht auch viel Spass, die richtige Passpartoutfarbe auszusuchen! Hier ist die Kommission nun ganz fertig und gerahmt!

Last night I did another quick pen and ink sketch in my homemade sketch book with great watercolor paper. It was a bunch of Kohlrabi that I found at the local produce market. They had labeled it as "large German turnips" LOL. After sketching it, I could finally cut it and enjoy it as thin raw slices. Ahhh, childhood memories!
Gestern abend malte ich wieder mal eine kleine Tuschezeichnung und dann Aquarell drueber. Es waren drei Kohlrabi, die ich am Tage vorher in unserem Gemuesemarkt gekauft hatte. Habe ich in den letzten Jahren sehr selten hier gesehen. Im Markt waren sie als "grosse Deutsche Rueben" ausgezeichnet, haha. Nach der Skizze konnte ich sie dann gleich in duenne Scheiben schneiden und meiner Familie als Kindheitserinnerung vorsetzen. Mmmmh!

Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year!

Hello again!
Hallo schon wieder!

Here is a quick sketch I did while our turkey was resting on Thanksgiving Day. I then added the other dishes from memory and the text while digesting ;-)
Hier ist eine Skizze, die ich anfertigte, waehrend unser Truthahn fuer Thanksgiving Day ruhte. Dann malte ich aus der Erinnerung die anderen Platten dazu, und dann die Schrift waehrend der Verdauung ;-)

Then I was asked to paint two different commissions for people to give as Christmas gift surprises.
Dann wurde ich fuer Weihnachten mit zwei Kommissionen beauftragt.

And here is a home commission, 11"x14" matted and framed, for the client's daughter in Massachusetts. I did it in Pen and Ink with a watercolor wash. It came out really nice and was well received!

Und hier eine Kommission fuer ein Hausportrait. 27cm x 35cm, fuer jemanden in Massachusetts. Dies ist eine Tuschenzeichnung mit Aquarell ueberarbeitet. Es gelang wirklich gut und die Tochter der Kundin war total ueberrascht.

I am also starting another Beginner's class that will take you through all the popular media in 12 weeks, with nothing to buy! I supply all the materials and tools. In the past year I have taken 35+ beginners on their journey to an artful life! The Beginners Class starts Feb 14 and ends around beginning of May.

I am also trying to get together a class for people interested in learning how to paint plein air (on location, as opposed to from a photo or in the studio). It starts Feb 4 and will go for 6 weeks.

All classes are held at the Artists Workshop in New Smyrna Beach.

This Saturday we were in Orlando to view the Citrus Parade. Here is my pen and ink sketch of it. They had several inflatables (cartoon characters and citrus fruit) like in the Macy's TG Day Parade. I added the text at home.

Diesen Samstag waren wir in Orlando, um die Citrus Parade anzuschauen. Hier ist meine Tuschenzeichnung davon. Es waren mehrere grosse Balloons dabei, wie in der Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Die Schrift habe ich daheim dann dazugefuegt.

Wow, it's been almost a month since my last blog post. I apologize, but I'm sure everybody was just as busy as I was during the holiday weeks.
Wow, den letzten Blog habe ich vor einem Monat geschrieben! Tut mir leid, aber ich denke, dass jeder genauso beschaeftigt war in der Weihnachtszeit wie ich...

I had 2 commissions for pet portraits that the clients were surprising a family member with. Here are both Rylee in a more traditional realistic style, and Chloe in a modern whimsical style. Both were fun to paint, and I heard that the paintings were very well received!
Ich hatte 2 Auftraege fuer Gemaelde von Hunden, die eine Weihnachtsueberraschung fuer Familienmitglieder meiner Kunden waren. Hier sind Rylee (in einem mehr traditionalen, realistischem Stil), und Chloe (mehr modern und frech). Beide machten Spass, sie zu malen, und ich hoerte, dass die Gemaelde gut ankamen!

This week I started 2 new classes and got some very good responses - both classes are full! I am very excited to teach again, especially this time a 12-week course for total beginners. I am introducing them to the most common media (pencil/charcoal, colored pencil/pastel, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics, and oils) along with some art history, youtube links, demonstrations, etc.
Diese Woche fing ich mit dem Unterrichten wieder an, und hatte grossen Erfolg - beide Klassen sind voll! Einer der Kurse ist 12 Wochen fuer totale Anfaenger. Ich werde sie mit den beliebtesten Mediums bekannt machen (Bleistift/Kreide, Pastell, Tuschezeichnung, Aquarell, Akryl, und Oel) zusammen mit Kunstgeschichte, Youtube Videos, Demonstrationen usw.

More gouache sketches

Hello everybody!

Currently, I love sketching in gouache (professional poster paints). Right now I'm practicing with my travel kit that I intend to bring with us when we visit Germany and Italy later this year. I am excited to hopefully bring back some really cool sketches of the old architecture and plazas there.

Zur Zeit skizziere ich viel in Gouache (Posterfarben). Ich uebe mit meinem kleinen Skizzenblock und den klitzekleinen Farbtuben und Pinseln, die ich nach Europa bringen werde, wenn wir spaeter im Jahr Deutschland und Italien besuchen. Ich freue mich schon drauf, ein paar tolle Szenen von der alten Architektur mitheimzubringen.

Last week I sat in our front yard and painted the effects of the setting sun on our street. It looks so lovely with the pinks and purples.

Letzte Woche sass ich im Vorgarten unseres Hauses (auf dem einzigen Huegel in Florida!) und skizzierte die Effekte der untergehenden Sonne. Unsere Strasse sieht viel toller aus mit Rosa und Violett!

The next day we went to the band shell at the beach in Daytona Beach, where there's a free concert every Saturday in the summer. This one was a cover band playing U2 songs. The sun was just setting, so the bright orange ground was perfect for that.

Am naechsten Tag gingen Austin und ich zur Bandshell in Daytona Beach am Strand. Es ist ein grosser Platz vor der Buehne, die mit 2 Tuermen und einem Muscheldach eingerahmt ist. An diesem Tag spielte eine lokale Band Lieder von U2. Im Sommer sind dort jeden Samstagabend Gratis-Konzerte, mit Feuerwerk um 21 Uhr.

In addition I also like to switch it up with some mixed media collages. Recently some friends of ours attended their daughter's wedding, and I painted a custom collage of their vacation home in Cabo San Lucas, where we stayed back in April.

The Ark - Commission

Yesterday I delivered my largest commission to date to my client. He was very happy.
Being a financial adviser he liked the picture of the ark as it is now imagined to have been. It shows stability and solidity in an unsure world of (financial) storms and trials. I painted from a photo he found on the internet, unfortunately I have been unable to find the original artist and cannot give credit (see below).
Gestern habe ich meine groesste Komission abgeliefert. Mein Kunde war sehr zufrieden.
Da er ein finanzieller Berater ist, mag er das Symbol der Arche, wie man sich das Boot heutzutage richtig vorstellt. Es zeigt Stabilitaet und festen Grund in einer unsicheren Welt von (finanziellen) Stuermen und Versuchungen. I malte es von einem Photo vom Internet, doch leider konnte ich den originalen Kuenstler nicht ausfinden, um Kredit zu geben.

I started this painting with many different items that not only represented his professional life (copies of money, charts from the Wall Street Journal, maps of the area where he works, etc), but also his personal life (kids, education, travel, etc.), that I glued onto the cradled wood panel. It was huge in my small studio - almost 3 feet by 4 feet!
Ich fing dieses Gemaelde mit verschiedenen Dingen an, die nicht nur das berufliche Leben des Kundens vorstellte (Geld, Ausschnitte von finanziellen Zeitungen, Landkarten, etc), sondern auch sein Privatleben (Kinder, Ehe, Ausbildung, Reisen, etc). Diese wurden auf die sehr grosse Holzplatte geklebt (76cm x 100cm)!

After the collage was done and dry, I started the drawing of the main items (the large boat and the passing storm cloud) with charcoal, and then glazed over with many transparent layers of black, golden yellow and burnt sienna. It was fun to see how the scene came together.

Nachdem die Collage fertig und trocken war, fing ich an, die grossen Elemente - das Boot und die Sturmwolke - mit Holzkohle zu zeichnen, und dann mit vielen Lasurschichten drueberzumalen, bis die Szene in schwarz, goldgelb und braun schoen zusammen kam.

After having looked at the painting for several days I decided to make the light stronger by adding goldleaf to the sun breaking out behind the clouds. I did this as a round glow, some rays streaming down, and some reflections off the side of the ark. Goldleaf is so nice because it changes its appearance and color when you view it from different angles and it adds a richness to the final painting.

Nachdem ich das Gemaelde fuer einige Tag sitzenliess und immer kurz anschaute, entschied ich mich, das Licht strahlender zu machen, indem ich mit Goldblatt die Sonne hinter den Wolken ausbrechen liess. Es sieht nun aus wie ein toller Schein rechts neben der Wolke, und auch einige Strahlen, die durch die Wolke brechen und sich dann an der Seite der Arche reflektieren. Ich benutze nun oefters Goldblatt in meinen Collagen, da es immer anders aussieht, je nachdem, von welcher Richtung aus man es betrachtet.

The final painting. You can still see the many items coming through the layers of paint, some more than others, but it definitely adds a whole lot of meaning, and is only visible and detectable after close viewing.

Das fertige Gemaelde. Man kann die verschiedenen Dinge durch die Farbschichten erkennen, manche mehr als andere, aber das fuegt viel mehr Bedeutung dazu und macht das Gemaelde noch viel interessanter, je laenger und intensiver man es anschaut.

NYC and Dog Commission

Hello again!
I finished the NYC painting that I talked about a while ago. I put some really cool items into the background from our recent trip to NYC, but unfortunately I went a bit wild with the colors and it's hard to find these items: our Metro Card, metro map, the pamphlet of the Broadway show we saw, some museum directories. Oh well, but at least I do know they're there on the bottom layer.

Ich habe das New York City Gemaelde fertiggestellt, von dem ich vor einigen Wochen gesprochen hatte. Ich fing mit der Collage an, die viele Dinge von unserem letzten Trip zu NYC beinhaltete, doch leider wurde das Gemaelde drueber dunkler und dunkler, und man kann die Sachen fast nicht sehen: unsere MetroKarte, die Metro Strassenkarte, ein Heftchen der Broadway Show, die wir sahen, und einige Heftchen von Museen. Nun ja, wenigstens weiss ICH, dass unsere Souveniere dort drunter sind.

Then I just finished a commissioned painting of a German Shepherd named Jenny that passed away and is dearly missed by her owner. In this one I also put a whole bunch of items in the background collage, that signify an event or hobby or memento of the owner and his beloved dog.
Dann malte ich eine Kommission fuer einen Freund, dessen Deutscher Schaeferhund namens Jenny gestorben ist. Auch in diesem Gemaelde fuegte ich ein Haufen Sachen dazu, die dem Besitzer viel bedeuteten, und auch ein kleine Gedicht oben links.

Deleon Springs art festival, Disappearing Island, and Copperhill, TN

Lots happened in the last month.
Viel passiert im letzten Monat.

Early April I was asked again to be one of the judges for the Deleon Springs Art Festival, which was, as usual, very charming. The community there is so nice! Jan Obendorfer, my fellow artist/judge, and I gave away 3 awards to some very deserving artists, one who made awesome handstitched quilts, another who created very detailed drawings of homes and gardens, and another with really cute birdhouses.
Im fruehen April wurde ich wieder eingeladen, also Juror beim Deleon Springs Kunstfestival teilzunehmen. Es war wieder ganz toll, und wir gaben 3 Preise an sehr verdienende Kuenstler aus.

Then about 2 weeks ago we went with our friends to Disappearing Island in New Smyrna Beach, where I painted a "portrait" of their boat. I will touch it up a bit more at home, before giving it to them. They really liked it!
Vor 2 Wochen luden uns Freunde ein, mit ihrem Boot zur "Verschwindenden Insel" in New Smyrna Beach zu fahren, wo ich dann ihr Boot auf die Leinwand bannte, da das Meer mir noch viel zu kalt war. Ich werde noch ein bisschen auftuschieren, bevor ich es ihnen gebe, doch sie waren sehr happy damit!

Floridays, oil on masonite, 10"x8"

The last weekend Austin and I took my teenagers to a whitewater rafting trip to the triangle of TN, GA and NC in Copperhill, TN. We braved the raging waters, which was so much fun, and also went horseback riding through the woods. I spent an hour one morning to paint a scene with the nice Blueridge Mountains being lit by the morning sun through the rising fog. The painting turned our really nice, and I felt the mini-vacation was complete.

Letztes Wochenende fuhren Austin und ich mit meinen Teenagers auf einen Whitewater Rafting Trip nach Tennesse, wo wir neben dem Fluss-Schnellen-Fahren auch einen tollen Ritt durch den Wald machten, hoch zu Ross. Ich konnte eine gute Stunde an einem Morgen damit verbringen, den Nebel einzufangen, der ueber der Wiese lag.
