New Classes coming Jan 2018!

Hello everybody!

Let's get the new year off to a great start of learning and exploring! I am scheduling 2 new classes starting early January at the Artists Workshop Studios. (map here)

On Monday afternoons, I will be offering Pen and Ink with Calligraphy and Goldleafing.

On Thursday mornings, I will be offering a "Beginner's Class to Art", introducing the most popular painting media and techniques.

Please read the summary of what to expect and details on time and cost below. You can also find the details on my website by clicking here.

MONDAY PM: Pen and Ink Class with Calligraphy and Goldleafing

starting Mon, Jan 8, 2018, 1-4pm at the Artists Workshop Studios
(members $80, non-members $95 per 6-week session)

In this class we will be exploring the exciting small pieces of art we can create with simple tools and materials. Pen and ink, colored with a wash of any water media, will capture sweet little scenes anywhere - and keep you in practice! In addition we will embellish our pieces with text by using simple calligraphy, and if there is interest, I will also introduce you to the wonderful technique of goldleafing to add that extra sparkle to any artwork!

Bring reference photos of what you want to sketch or choose from the assortment I will bring along.

Minimal art supplies needed:
-Pencil and eraser
-Pen, calligraphy pen, ink pen, microliner or similar
-Mixed media paper or sturdy card stock
-Your favorite water media: watercolor, acrylics or gouache
I will incorporate calligraphy and goldleafing depending on interest from the body of the class. I will provide all goldleafing supplies so you don't have to go to the expense of buying everything just to try it out. Doing the goldleafing will be an extra $10 per student.

THURSDAY AM: Beginners Class: The Basics of Painting

starting Thu, Jan 11, 2018, 9:30am-12:30pm at the Artists Workshop Studios
(members $80, non-members $95 per 6-week session)
This class will be two 6-week sessions consecutively, plus a $55 materials fee.

An introduction to the most popular media and their techniques and materials
If you have decided to make art a part of your life, but don't know where to start or which technique would best suit your lifestyle and temperament, this is the class for you! To go thru all 6 media will require the time of 12 sessions. Each session is 3 hours. The cost for the instruction is $160 ($190 for non-AWI members) plus $55 for all materials and tools. You will have to buy nothing up front. If you already have some art materials, please bring them along so we can compare and evaluate what else might be needed.

We will start with pencil and graphite sketching, then explore some colored pencil and pastel drawing. As a third technique we will continue with pen and ink drawing. Adding a gradated wash in ink, we will naturally progress to watercolor. We then will spend a couple of sessions trying out acrylics and oils. Each student should be able to go home with a completed small piece of art in each of the 6 most common media:
1. Pencil/Graphite
2. Colored Pencil/Pastel
3. Pen and Ink/Ink Wash
4. Watercolor
5. Acrylics
6. Oils
But the most important thing is that you will gain a broader knowledge of techniques and materials and can make a better decision in what would suit YOU to take up as a hobby!

These explorations in chunks of about 1-3 sessions (each session is 3 hours) in each medium will give you a good idea what you like and what would suit your life and ultimate goals of creating.
I will give you advice and tips of what to purchase, what is necessary and what you can do without, with links and recommendations as to further exploration via internet, books, and artists' newsletters.

Sample of Pencil/Graphite

Sample of Pen & Ink with Wash

Sample of Watercolor
To see the scene in the other media, you just have to take the class!

Summer camp and some random sketches

Hello everybody!
Lots of things happened in the past month. I was busy teaching 2 days of summer camp for Art Is Creation... under the direction of Regina Wise. I taught a 4-hour class to the elementary kids in early June, creating a torn and glued tissue paper piece reminiscent of stained glass, and then a day of Plein Air painting in the studio backyard with acrylics. For that day we had a miniature horse posing for us, which was really cool.

Below is our model, Peanut the miniature horse, with his owner Shelley. I gave her my demonstration painting. Peanut held quite still for me explaining the landscape and putting in a live animal, but was getting impatient by the time the teens were ready for their turn. But he was really cute!

Last week I joined the Plein Air Tuesday group in the morning under the Dunlawton Bridge, and I painted the view to the north across the Halifax River.

1. Acrylic underpainting with blues and purples.
1. In Akryl mit blau und lila.

2. Oils added on top of the wild colors.
2. Oelfarben obendrauf.

3. View across the Halifax, oil 14"x11"
Not sure if I shouldn't have stopped at Step 2.

And here some random gouache sketches (all 8"x5") from the local area in the last 3 weeks.

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!
Viel Vergnuegen im Sommer!

TRAVEL SKETCHES 2 - Ireland

Hello again, here is part 2 of our trip!
Hallihallo, hier ist der 2. Teil unserer Reise.

We arrived in Dublin and walked the city for 2 days before venturing out on our own on the wrong - ahem, left side of the traffic in our rental car. Our apartment was right next to St.Patrick's Cathedral.

1. St. Patrick's Cathedral. That drawing was a tour de force in perspective! But I prevailed and it came out really nice.
St. Patrick's Cathedral.

2. A bus stop in Dublin. Waiting for the Hop on - Hop off tour bus.

3. Jameson Irish Whiskey distillery. Outside courtyard, waiting for the tour. This is a magnificent copper kettle for distilling!

4. On our way down south to Cork we visited Cashel Castle. The cemetery had lots of the traditional Irish crosses, and the tour was really great.

5. Downtown Cork, while Austin was having a pint.

6. Downtown Kinsale, a very picturesque coastal town in the South. Earlier we drove the Ring of Kerry, but I had no time to sketch. Took too many photos there, what a spectacular landscape! It's different around every corner.

7. Downtown Galway, in the west of Ireland.
Innenstadt von Galway, im Westen von Irland.

8. Some tidbits we learned or found funny about Ireland, plus street musician Paul and his awesome dog Miley we befriended at the pub in Galway. I showed Paul my sketchbook, and the rather graphic speech bubble on the right is his quote ;-)

9. Finally some landscape sketches! This was our favorite day. While the sun was out, we walked the entire 11 miles of the Cliffs of Moher in 5 hours and picnicked on one of the 700' high cliffs. It was awesome, one of the most spectacular sights we have ever seen!

10. Cliffs of Moher from the other side while we ate our lunch. Lots of people there, but only a few ventured all the way to both points like us.

11. Connemara Coast. This is the western part of Ireland where you can encounter sheep wandering the streets. I loved the landscape with its rather barren mountains, lakes and brown meadows. Very lonesome and wild. The quote is from Chris de Burgh (famous Irish soft pop singer from my childhood whose concert we caught while in Berlin just a week ago - what a treat!)

12. In the western part we stayed in Galway, which is such a nice and friendly town. Here is the rather new, but beautiful cathedral which I painted while Austin took a 5mile run around town.

13. From Galway we drove up to Northern Ireland where we stayed in the coastal town of Bangor, right next to Belfast. In Belfast we took a very interesting walking tour. This is the view from our apartment, with the ocean to the left.

14. From Belfast we had easy access to the Giant's Causeway. I sketched the first (less interesting) inlet while waiting for our tour guide. The interlocking stones were awesome to walk on and take great pictures.

15. Our very last sight to visit at Knowth/Newgrange, on our way back to Dublin to the airport. A large site of passage graves that were over 5000 years old. That was very cool to see, and we were blessed with another mostly sunny day with the usual sprinkle here and there.

16. Our last night in Ireland, we walked downtown Dublin in gorgeous warm sunshine, to have one last pint/one last sketch. We were driven home early by a sudden shower, and for the first time it actually poured instead of just sprinkles (all the way to the apartment, about 2 miles).

17. Map of Ireland with the sights/cities we visited and our route in red. We loved Ireland and will take months to digest all the things we saw and experienced.

TRAVEL SKETCHES 1 - Germany

As promised, here is a rather lengthy post of our recent trip to Europe.

We visited my family in Northern Bavaria (region of Wuerzburg) for 5 days, then took the train to Berlin where we stayed 3 days. After that we toured Ireland for 10 days.

Here are the sketches I did while in Germany, in chronological order (is my OCD showing?)
Hier sind meine Skizzen, ich machte fast mein ganzes Buechlein voll (35 Zeichnungen!), in chronologischer Reihenfolge.

1. We flew out of Daytona Beach, where I did my first drawing of people waiting, and on social media (young and old)

2. In the plane to Frankfurt. Austin watching a Beatles documentary.
Im Flugzeug nach Frankfurt, Austin schaut einen Beatles Dokumentarfilm an.

3. An overview of our trip with current weather from the newspaper. As you can see, it was quite chilly the whole time, but we had pretty good weather.
Ein Wetterbericht und was wir machten.

4. First day with my parents, we visit Rothenburg. A must if you go to Germany. It's a medieveal town with lots of character and timber-framed houses, with the original wall still intact around the whole downtown! Unfortuntely I abandoned this sketch, due to time constraints.

Another view of Rothenburg, the main square with a fountain.
Ein Blick auf den Marktplatz von Rothenburg.

5. My parents' condo, they live on the top floor in the building on the right. They questioned if those utilitarian buildings would make a good sketch. I think so!

6. The city hall in Ochsenfurt. Yes, City Hall is "Rat-Haus" in German. On the right you can see the May Pole. Almost every village had one, erected on May 1.

7. Marktbreit. We visited the small town in the afternoon.
Marktbreit, am Nachmittag besucht.

8. Backyards seen from the second-story porch of my sister's house. Edith questioned why I would paint the mess of their neighbors, but agreed that it came out nice with my editing. "Better than reality!"

9. 2017 is the 500 year anniversary of Martin Luther, and there are festivities everywhere in Germany. In Wertheim, close to home, a great selection of choirs performed downtown and up at the castle. We watched Edith's favorite choir for about an hour, while her sons ran around the grounds.

10. Downtown Lohr, very picturesque. Supposedly Sleeping Beauty lived in the castle there.

11. Map of Germany and the cities we visited. I went to high school in Wuerzburg.

12. Speaking of Wuerzburg, of course we went there too, for a hike to the castle, and then a glass of wine/beer downtown. This is the old bridge over the river Main.

13. Wuerzburg's castle, Fortress Marienberg.
Die Wuerzburger Festung Marienberg.

_________________________________________________________

14. Okay, now we are in Berlin! This is the old Oberbaumbruecke in the former East part of Berlin. The apartment we rented was nearby. This bridge was part of the wall, dividing East and West Berlin after the war. There was a souvenir stand that stamped my drawing for 2 Euros with an (authentic?) East German Police insignia. I thought that was pretty cool.
DDR Stempel versehen lassen. Das fand ich ganz cool.

15. Old National Gallery. Our only "real artistic" visit during this trip. But it was great. They had a lot of the gouache paintings and drawings of Adolph Menzel, whom I admire.

16. We participated in a 5-hour walking tour and saw a lot of Berlin, but I couldn't sketch too much there. So here we are at Airport Schoenefeld, waiting for our cheap flight to Dublin.

The Irish part of our journey coming next!!!!
