Wekiva Paintout 2019!

Hello everybody!
Hallihallo!

It's been a week since I've come back from the Wekiva Paintout. This was my second year, and it was even better than last time!
Bill and Marysue Weinaug, the owners of Wekiva Island, and the organizers of the Paintout, gave the 25+ artists free accommodations at the Wekiva Springs Park, great food throughout the week, and parties and galas along with the accessibility to the many wonderful patrons and sponsors!

I was bunking with Manon Sander, Michelle Held and Elizabeth St. Hilaire in the largest cabin at the park, where we had lots of fun and shared many giggles and serious art talk.

Michelle, me and Manon

Our "adult camping" accommodations with toilets, kitchen and A/C!
Unsere Huette, toll fuer "Camping fuer Erwachsene" mit Toilette, Kueche und Airconditioning!

We had great weather except for one half-dreary cooler day, where we all painted together in the cabins and/or mess hall. For me personally it was a great opportunity to get to know the artists much better and share knowledge, art critiques and questions.

As a kickoff piece I took hubby Austin's favorite painting off his office wall. I had painted it at the bar during last year's paintout on the last day, and it didn't sell. Well, to Austin's chagrin, this painting was the first one to sell that week! One of the beer distributors bought it!

Here are the other paintings that I did during the week:

Composition in Green and Gold (Sea grapes)  16"x16"  oil on wood
Komposition in Gruen und Gold (Meertraube)  41cm x 41cm  Oel auf Holz

I painted with Michelle and Elizabeth on the edge of the river, and I wanted to try my hand on something I usually don't do: details of organic forms! (My favorite subject are urban landscapes LOL) It came out really nice, this plant has very glossy reddish leaves that are small and are surrounded by the more greenish-gold larger mature leaves. It was really fun to paint. Just as I finished the painting, the wind pushed it off my easel, but I caught it with my back and not too much smeared.

Morning on the Wekiwa  14"x11"/35cm x 28cm oil on panel

Wekiva Island Afternoon  11"x14"/28cm x 35cm  oil on panel

This one sold during the gala on Saturday. I had painted this iconic scene on a board that I gessoed in black, which is a great way to paint, because any color you add just really pops. The little bits of black showing through at the end give it a cohesive coloring that make all the element stand out a bit more.

Homegrown  14"x11"/35cm x 28cm  oil on panel

Another one that I would NEVER paint on my own. I was driving around with Michelle to find some orange trees, and while we saw a huge alligator sunning on the side of the road, and some beautiful sunflowers, no orange tree was to be found. We then turned into a nursery where the owner was super nice and very willing to give us a spot in the greenhouse. Michelle did a great closeup of three oranges, while I tried my hand on this overwhelmingly green and organic scene of looking along the aisle of plants for sale. This was one of my favorite paintings at the end of the week! Thanks Michelle for pushing me to do something out of the ordinary!

Good morning, Wekiwa  14"x11" oil on panel

And the next day my other friend Manon pushed me to try something new! We rented canoes and paddled up the Wekiwa river to tie up in the lily pads and paint something up close. Again, I would never do that on my own! The morning was beautiful, and lots of people paddled by in canoes and kayaks with lots of (positive) comments. I later learned that these are not water lilies, but "spatterdock" that bears little yellow button flowers that never really open (I put one in the center back).

During the week we had a live auction, with all the proceeds of the artwork going towards Wekiva Wilderness Trust and Keep Seminole Beautiful, as do most of the other profits during the week.

Here are some more photos and impressions of the week. Great artwork, wonderful artists, awesome fellowship and memories!

During the final gala I am being interviewed by the president of the Cuplet Fern/Florida Native Plant Society because of my organic artwork!

New plein air setup

Hello everybody! I hope you are all having a nice summer.
Hallo Ihr alle! Ich hoffe, Euer Sommer ist ganz toll!

I was teaching 3x during summercamp at the Artists Workshop studios. It was fun, I taught elementary school on 2 separate days, and then one day for the teens. The little kids got introduced to agamographs (too complicated to explain) and Picasso, and the teens did a self-portrait in Andy Warhol/pop style.

These are the Agamographs.

At the end of the 4 weeks (2 weeks for children, 2 weeks for teens) I helped with cleanup and hang the resulting artworks for a show. Everybody was pleased and the parents were excited to view the various pieces of art.

Don't look for me on these photos, most of them were mine, so I'm not on any of them ;-(

________________________________________________________

During the summer I made a new setup for plein air painting for myself. I have used a pochade box for years now (almost 10) that I have also made for about 20 other artists who liked it. I initially had found the instructions on the internet. However, after spending some time with all the other professional artists at Forgotten Coast and comparing their various setups, I figured it was time for an upgrade. I ended up copying a setup that the artist James Coulter developed and sells. Being crafty, I figured it out and made my own for a fraction of the cost online. And it works well, too!

I was very pleased with it as I took it out for a real painting session this week. We were at the Jetty Park in Ponce Inlet, FL (north of New Smyrna Beach) with family, and I snuck away for an hour to paint. Unfortunately I forgot my turpentine and paper towels, so I painted most of it with palette knife, which captured the breeze and liveliness of the scene.

Pen and Ink

Hello!
I am still teaching my Pen and Ink Class, it was very popular after the 4 weeks ended, so I'm now teaching it again for 6 weeks at the Artists Workshop. Of course I practice what I preach (draw as much as possible, no matter the scene), so I did a whole bunch of small drawings with gouache on top recently.
Hallo!

Here they are/Hier sind sie:

1. Last weekend my husband and I stopped in downtown Sanford at the German deli (yum yum) to have some German beer and a real Leberkaesbroetchen (a roll with warm "German meatloaf"). It was great. While he got the food, I sat at the table outside by the Farmer's Market and sketched the old theater. I did pen and ink with gouache. All that on top of an old drawing that I obscured at home with burnt sienna acrylics and then some white acrylics, as it was way too dark. (I painted the gouache with some of his beer, because I didn't have any water with me)
Afterwards we drove to Winter Park where we visited the very interesting and vast Morse museum which has the largest collection of Tiffany glass and sketches. It was awesome!

2. The next day: more art! We went to the Mt. Dora Art Festival, where I sketched the main entrance to the festival with its banners and food booths, while he got us some Greek food. I sketched on blank white paper and during my class showed them how to overlay with very watery gouache paints, which looks like a watercolor, to enliven the scene.

3. This week I had to take my car for an oil change, and instead of browsing the magazine, watching TV in the waiting room or looking at random stuff on my phone, I sketched the dealership with its row of cars outside. Again, pen and ink with a water gouache overlay. After I posted it on facebook, even the dealership commented on how they liked it.

Some news at the end of the year

Hello everybody. Here are some news that I wanted to share.

I got notified that Disney is changing up their Spring and Garden Festival in the coming years, and will be discontinuing the plein air artists' participation. How sad! It was so nice to go there in the spring and interact with the tourists while painting. Not to mention the great room and board! Oh well...

So something else opened up instead! I was accepted into the Winter Park Paintout! Yippee! Click on the link to check it out, but unfortunately it still shows the artists and gallery from this year.
But I am really excited, it is a very prestigious event, and I am so happy I made it - which is solely based on your artwork! I will of course write about it when it comes about.

Here is my newest painting, it's mixed media with acrylics, black gesso, ink, pastels, and gold leaf. I am showing the progress in the first 3 pictures, and also the final painting in 4 various lighting situations, because the gold leaf effect changes with every angle you view it at.

Pen and Ink Class updated

Hello
I was supposed to teach a 4-week course doing pen and ink colorful drawings. Since the studios at the Artist Workshop sustained major roof damage, they were closed for a good month, and all the classes had to be delayed. I asked my students if it was okay to start the class next year, as the last 2 months of the year are always so hectic, and we agreed to hold the class on Thursdays in Jan, starting Jan 5, 2017. So I have a bit more time to prepare and gather more ideas.
Hallo,

Above is a new pen and ink, without any color addition. It's from a photo I took in Schwaebisch Hall in Germany in September.

For the new exhibit at the AWI gallery on Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach I entered the mixed media below. I had started it earlier this year, but now that I was face to face with the original Botticelli at the Uffizi in Florence, I had to finish it as soon as we got back home!

All the best, and til later
Also, bis spaeter wieder

Canaveral Seashore Plein Air Paintout - final events!

Hello again,
Last week saw the final wrap-up of the now month-long paintout, due to Hurricane Matthew. On Thursday we had a final sunset paintout for 2 hours of all artists still attending at the Outriggers Tiki Bar and Grille in New Smyrna Beach. Afterwards they held the live auction of about 35 paintings, most of which sold that night. It was a great finale, which much success.
Hallihallo!

1. View towards Chicken Island, which many of the artists painted.

2. Outriggers Restaurant from the docks

3. Live Auction!

I am getting more into landscape painting and tackled the view to Chicken Island, with the clouds being lit up by the setting sun.

1. Painting started on a black canvas. I love that!

2, More color laid in. Mehr Farben draufgelegt.

3. Final painting: Evening at Chicken Island  14"x11", oil on panel SOLD

I sold all 3 paintings I had there, 2 still from October from the gallery, and the one I had painted that evening, without a frame, still wet. I was very happy.

4. Here are the Morgans with their purchase. Thank you!
Die Morgans mit ihrem Kauf. Vielen Dank!

5. My beach painting sold too!

Ruth

First post in 2013 and an award

Hello finally! I have been really slacking off during the winter. We had several remodeling projects at home, and I've been super busy at work, plus our winter was really cold this year (I believe we had about 5 nights of frost, actually most of them during the last couple of days). Enough excuses.
I entered one of my recent paintings at the 55th Annual Artists' Workshop Member's Show in NSB and I won an award sponsored by Jennings Insurance Agency.
Endlich mal wieder was von mir!

I also wanted to let you all know that I was invited again to paint at the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival this spring. It will be 3 days of painting on April 5-7. Maybe some of you could come by. We are painting from 11am to 7pm. Long but fun days!
Freue mich schon!

And tomorrow I am doing my first paintout this year for a couple of hours at the Artists' Workshop in NSB. It's the Lagoonacy and sounds like loads of fun. I will post pictures later this weekend.

Canaveral Paintout 2012 - Day 4

The 4th day started out very windy. Hurricane Sandy was churning up the water and it was very windy. Linda Blondheim was scheduled to do a demo right at the beach under the new Flagler Pavilion, and she braved the wind and drizzle on her face and did a great and informative demo on painting and sculpting clouds with her paintbrush.

After lunch I was scheduled to give my demo at Island Collections on Flagler Ave. It is a very small but great shop full of wonderful furniture from all over the world. They have great vases, artifacts and historical items, it was great to discover this awesome little treasure. I set up under a structure from Bali in the small courtyard and painted the converted garage which houses even more items, with an umbrella in the sun and some foliage behind it.

This is my underpainting. It wasn't a scene I would have picked and so the final result wasn't really frameable, but I believe I got my points across. Several people came up to me later and told me how informative I made it and how well I presented the information and answered questions. I really like to teach!

About 20 minutes into the demo there was a sudden downpour and we all huddled under the covered porch. This changed my vantage point and I lost the sunlight. I relied on a picture I had taken earlier with my phone, and made up the highlights. Another excuse for not turning out a masterpiece ;-) But hey, now I can say I did a demonstration painting in a hurricane!

On Thursday evening we all met at JB's Fishcamp about 1 mile outside the park, and did a sunset painting. This year it was a bit different, as there were too many clouds to give us a colorful sunset. However, most of us did paint something there, and then at 7pm we had an auction for the public. Almost every artist contributed at least one painting, and most of them were auctioned off for the desired amounts. It was great fun.

This was my little sunset painting. Again, the photo is really blurry and bad.
