14th Annual Wekiva Paintout

Wow, it's been almost 5 months since my last report!
Wow, es sind fast 5 Monate seit meinem letzten Report!

A new year has started, I am teaching 4 classes currently at the Artists Workshop in NSB, coordinate the life drawing sessions, went to NYC for a great business trip with Austin, and continue to develop my pen and ink drawing style. So much has happened, but I want to focus on the recent paintout. More of the other stuff in a later post...
Ein neues Jahr hat angefangen, ich unterrichte 4 verschiedene Faecher im Artists Workshop in NSB, coordiniere die Sessions mit Modell, ging auf einen tollen Business Trip nach New York City mit Austin, und entwickele meinen Tuschezeichnen-Stil weiter. So viel ist passiert, aber ich will hier nur ueber den Paintout berichten, mehr ueber alles andere in der nahen Zukunft...

25 artists gathered at the Wekiwa Springs State Park by Apopka last week to paint the varying scenes. The park has beautiful forests with dark slender pine trees growing between golden fields of long grasses, down the road the crystal-clear waters of the bubbling spring creates a wonderful swimming spot, and Wekiva Island, the bar and fun spot of the Weinaug's who coordinate and sponsor the event, has tall greenery framing the clear Wekiwa river full of turtles, gators, and various birds.
25 Kuenstler versammelten sich letzte Woche fuer 7 Tage im Wekiwa Springs State Park in Zentral-Florida, um die verschiedenen Szenen zu malen. Der Park hat einen tollen Wald mit schlanken, dunklen Tannen, die in Feldern von goldenen Graesern wachsen, ein paar Schritte entfernt sprudelt kristallklares Wasser des Wekiwas aus dem Boden, um einen tollen natuerlichen Swimmingpool zu bilden, und Wekiva Island, die Bar und Vergnuegungsplatz der Weinaug's, die den Paintout organisieren, hat gruene Baeume und Wasserrosen, die den klaren WekiwaFluss rahmen, wo Schildkroeten, Alligators and zahlreiche Voegel leben.

We painted day and night, had great food, lots of sales, and wonderful companionship with the artists who all bunked at the State Park. So much fun!
Wir malen Tag und Nacht, hatten tolles Essen, etliche Verkauefe, und grossartige Gesellschaft mit den Kuenstlern, die alle in den Huetten im State Park untergebracht waren. So viel Spass!

Several afternoons some of us got together and did portrait sessions, forming the "informal" Wekiva Portrait Society ;-)  All the "foreigners" of our artist group were painting portraits, our sitters were American. So we had China (Hai-Ou), Ukraine (Olena), Russia (Natalia), Israel (Orit), and Germany (me) at every sitting. It was great to see how everybody approached the portrait differently - I tried watercolors and it was very difficult but satisfying to work with.
Einige Nachmittage versammelten sich einige von uns, um Portraits zu malen. Wir gruendeten die informelle "Wekiva Portrait Gesellschaft". Alle Fremdgeborenen der Kuenstler malten Portraits, waehrend die Modelle Amerikaner waren. Wir hatten China (Hai-Ou), Ukraine (Olena), Russia (Natalia), Israel (Orit), and Germany (ich) in jeder Stunde. Es war echt interessant zu sehen, wie jeder ein Portrait anders anfing - ich versuchte einige in Aquarell, was sehr schwer ist, doch ich war ziemlich zufrieden mit meinen Gemaelden.

Here are my paintings of the week: I did some in oil (traditional brushes and thick impasto with palette knife), and then introduced my pen and ink with wash, which received great feedback.
Hier sind meine Gemaelde der Woche: Ich malte einige in Oel (traditionell mit Pinseln, und einige mit dickem Impasto mit dem Palettenmesser), und stellte dann auch meine Tuschezeichnungen mit Aquarell vor, was guten Feedback bekam.

A reporter came around and photographed me sketching at the bar, then added me to the newspaper article in the Orlando Sentinel. Ein Reporter kam vorbei und fotographierte einige von uns, auch mich an der Bar, und schrieb einen tollen Bericht in der Orlando Zeitung.

Talkin' about kayaking and taking classes!

Hi everybody

Austin and I took our kayaks out yesterday and paddled around beautiful New Smyrna Beach. It was relaxing and nice, and I could even do a little sketch during lunch on a sandbar in the middle of the inlet (see red star).

gestern gingen Austin und ich mit unseren Kayaks paddeln in New Smyrna Beach. Sehr entspannend und schoen, und ich malte sogar eine kleine Skizze zum Mittagessen, das wir auf einer Sandbank in der Mitte des Inlets hielten (siehe roter Stern).

Summer is over, and classes are starting very soon!

St Augustine Plein Air Paintout part 2

Some of you asked what the other winners at the Quickdraw looked like. Here you go.
Einige haben mich gefragt, wie die anderen Gemaelde aussahen, die gewonnen haben. Hier unten, bitte.

I was in St. Augustine on 3 more days last week and did these 3 nice paintings that I'm pretty proud of.
Ich war in St. Augustine noch 3 Tage letzte Woche und brachte 3 sehr schoene Gemaelde zusammen, auf die ich alle ziemlich stolz bin.

1. Aviles Street, very cute and not overrun with tourists, is a nice alleyway with old houses. About 10 of us painted at various spots on this street on Tuesday. This one was a marathon painting for me, almost 4 hours! Usually I finish a painting in 1-2 hours, so this was quite long for me, but totally worth it!
1. Aviles Street, sehr huebsch und ohne viele Touristen, ist ein kleines Gaesschen mit alten Haeusern. Ungefaehr 10 Maler malten am Dienstag auf den Gehsteigen. Es war ein Marathon-Gemaelde fuer mich, fast 4 Stunden! Normalerweise bringe ich ein Gemaelde so in 1-2 Stunden fertig, doch dieses dauerte halt etwas laenger, aber ich finde, dass es die Zeit wert war!

2. On Wednesday morning I went over the bridge so I had a good look of the spectacular bridge with a city view of the old town. It was super windy and I had to leash my easel to a palm tree, which threw shadows on my painting. Half the time I didn't even see what I was painting.
2. Am Mittwoch morgen ging ich ueber die Bruecke, so dass ich dann zurueckschauend eine schoene Sicht auf die Altstadt hatte. Es war total windig, und ich musste meine Staffelei an eine Palme binden, was dann ein stoerendes Schattenspiel auf meine Leinwand warf. Ich wusste meistens gar nicht, was ich eigentlich malte...

I took some liberties with the light and turned the strong noon light into a moody morning scene.
Ich aenderte das Licht und machte die Farben des starken Mittagslichtes in eine ruhige Morgenszene.

3. I went back on Friday and painted the iconic lions on the old side of the bridge. That was a lot of fun. I could see how the practice with drawing a live model/figure really helped with this. I animated my progression on this for you. Enjoy!
3. Am Freitag war mein letzter Maltag und ich malte die beruehmten Loewen, die auf jeder Seite der Bruecke Wache halten. Diese Szene machte mir total Spass. Ich konnte sehen, wie die Abende mit dem Zeichnen vom Modell Live mir damit total geholfen haben. Ich machte eine schoene Animation meines Malvorgangs fuer Euch, viel Spass!

I think I used up all my purple and pinks this week, LOL. (As my students know, I mix colors from a very limited palette, so most of the purples are made with alizarin crimson and ultramarine blue with lots of white).
Ich glaube, ich habe alle meine Violetten und Rosa Farben in dieser Woche aufgebraucht, haha. (Wie meine Schueler wissen, mische ich alle Farben von nur 3 Farben auf meiner Palette, die meisten Violetten Farben sind von Karmesin-Rot und Ultramarin-Blau mit viel Weiss gemischt)

Every artist is allowed to have 3 paintings in the show that hangs May 4-27, 2018 at the St Augustine Art Association. Prizes will be awarded later this week. Keeping my fingers crossed...
Jeder Maler darf 3 Gemaelde ausstellen, die Show haengt von 4. bis 27. Mai in St. Augustine im Kunstclub. Preise werden auch spaeter in der Woche vergeben, drueckt mir die Daumen!

Wow, it's been almost a month since my last blog post. I apologize, but I'm sure everybody was just as busy as I was during the holiday weeks.
Wow, den letzten Blog habe ich vor einem Monat geschrieben! Tut mir leid, aber ich denke, dass jeder genauso beschaeftigt war in der Weihnachtszeit wie ich...

I had 2 commissions for pet portraits that the clients were surprising a family member with. Here are both Rylee in a more traditional realistic style, and Chloe in a modern whimsical style. Both were fun to paint, and I heard that the paintings were very well received!
Ich hatte 2 Auftraege fuer Gemaelde von Hunden, die eine Weihnachtsueberraschung fuer Familienmitglieder meiner Kunden waren. Hier sind Rylee (in einem mehr traditionalen, realistischem Stil), und Chloe (mehr modern und frech). Beide machten Spass, sie zu malen, und ich hoerte, dass die Gemaelde gut ankamen!

This week I started 2 new classes and got some very good responses - both classes are full! I am very excited to teach again, especially this time a 12-week course for total beginners. I am introducing them to the most common media (pencil/charcoal, colored pencil/pastel, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics, and oils) along with some art history, youtube links, demonstrations, etc.
Diese Woche fing ich mit dem Unterrichten wieder an, und hatte grossen Erfolg - beide Klassen sind voll! Einer der Kurse ist 12 Wochen fuer totale Anfaenger. Ich werde sie mit den beliebtesten Mediums bekannt machen (Bleistift/Kreide, Pastell, Tuschezeichnung, Aquarell, Akryl, und Oel) zusammen mit Kunstgeschichte, Youtube Videos, Demonstrationen usw.

We also started the live model studio time again, and here are some of my best drawings from 5 different models, all 10-20 minute poses:

Summer camp and some random sketches

Hello everybody!
Lots of things happened in the past month. I was busy teaching 2 days of summer camp for Art Is Creation... under the direction of Regina Wise. I taught a 4-hour class to the elementary kids in early June, creating a torn and glued tissue paper piece reminiscent of stained glass, and then a day of Plein Air painting in the studio backyard with acrylics. For that day we had a miniature horse posing for us, which was really cool.

Viele Ereignisse im letzten Monat. Ich habe 2 Tage Summercamp fuer Art Is Creation... unter der Direktion von Regina Wise unterrichtet. Fuer die Grundschueler machten wir eine Collage aus verschieden-farbigen Papieren, die dann wie Glasfenster aussahen. Fuer die Teens zeigte ich wieder, wie ein Bild draussen plein air gemalt wird. Wir malten in Acrylics, und hatten sogar ein  Minipferd, das fuer uns modellierte!

Below is our model, Peanut the miniature horse, with his owner Shelley. I gave her my demonstration painting. Peanut held quite still for me explaining the landscape and putting in a live animal, but was getting impatient by the time the teens were ready for their turn. But he was really cute!
Unten unser Modell Peanut, das Minipferd, mit Besitzer Shelley. Ich gab ihr mein Demonstrationsgemaelde. Peanut hielt ziemlich still fuer mich, als ich meine Erklaerungen abgab, doch war dann im Laufe des Tages viel zu unruhig, so dass er in einigen der Teen's Gemaelde mehr wie ein Maerchentier aussah. Aber er war ein wirklich liebes Pferd!

Last week I joined the Plein Air Tuesday group in the morning under the Dunlawton Bridge, and I painted the view to the north across the Halifax River.

Letzte Woche traf ich mich mit der Dienstagsgruppe unter der Dunlawton Bridge in Port Orange, und ich malte den Blick in den Norden, ueber den Halifax Fluss weg.

1. Acrylic underpainting with blues and purples.

Not sure if I shouldn't have stopped at Step 2.

Ich weiss nicht, ob ich vielleicht nicht lieber nach dem 2. Schritt aufgehoert haben sollte (wow, ist das richtiges Deutsch?)

Live Model drawings

Hello again!
I am making up for not posting too much in recent weeks.
I am attending the Tuesday evening live model drawing class at the Artists Workshop, and here are some of my drawings. I am using pencil, charcoal, sanguine, and an ink wash on some. Very interesting to try out different media.

Ich habe so lange nichts geschrieben, nun hole ich es auf.
Ich nehme wieder an den Dienstag abenden teil, wo ein nacktes Modell fuer uns 3 Stunden lang sitzt. Hier sind einige meiner Skizzen. Ich zeichne mit Bleistift, Kohle, Roetelstift, und Tusche. Es macht Spass, soviele Materialien auszuprobieren.

Some 2-5 minute warm-up poses. Einige kurze Posen (2-5 Minuten)

And here are the longer poses, 10-20 minutes each.

Die naechsten sind 10-20 Minuten.

My favorite, here is Pattie with a 40-minute pose, but it only took me 30 minutes.

Und hier meine Liebelingspose von Pattie, die sie 40 Minuten gehalten hat, doch ich brauchte nur 30 Minuten, um sie ziemlich gut einzufangen.
