New Direction!

Wow, what a workshop! I am so excited - I'm busting. I just took a 2-day workshop last weekend with local artist Christine Peloquin, who does mixed media portraits. I am so glad I took these lessons, I think I want to take my art into a whole new direction. I will still do plein airs in oils, but I will try to do more studio paintings in this new style - collaging different fibers and materials as an underbase, sketching the main parts in charcoal, and then painting in glazes in acrylics over it.
Wow, was fuer ein Wochenende! Ich bin so froh, dass ich diesen Workshop mit Kuenstlerin Christine Peloquin mitgemacht habe. Sie kreiert gemischte Mediengemaelde fuer Portraits. I glaube, dass meine Kunst eine neue Richtung einschlagen wird, so toll finde ich diese Methode!
Ich werde immer noch Plein Air Szenen in Oel malen, doch mehr Gemaelde im Studio fertigbringen in dieser Technik - mit verschidenen Stoffen und Papieren eine Basis als Collage kleben, dann mit Kohle die grossen Formen skizzieren, und dann mit weichen Acrylic-Farben in einigen duennen Schichten druebermalen.

I did these 2 small fruit paintings first, and then after an unsuccessful flower painting (I really dislike painting organic details!) I went back to my beloved architecture and left it kind of wild in color and texture. I really love the technique, the interesting shapes and materials, and the great texture the underlying collage provides to the following painting. I would love to hear your comments.

Ich malte erst diese 2 kleinen Obstgemaelde, und dann, nach einem nicht gerade erfolgreichen Blumengemaelde (ich mag wirklich nicht gern organische Details malen), ging ich zurueck zu meiner geliebten Architektur. Ich malte diese 2 lokalen Szenen von Daytona Beach und liess sie ein bisschen wild und crazy. Ich finde diese Technik wirklich toll mit ihren interessanten Formen und Materialien, und der tollen Textur, die ich unter dem eigentlichen Gemaelde dadurch kriege. Ich wuerde mich ueber Kommentare sehr freuen.

Painting at Epcot March 2015

Ah, what a weekend! I just came back from painting at Epcot in Orlando. As usual, it was a great time. This was my fourth time participating in the Arts in the Garden during the Flower and Garden Festival.
We had great rooms at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, where many African animals like zebras, antelopes and giraffes were grazing right outside your balcony.
Was fuer ein Wochenende! Ich bin gerade vom Malen in Epcot, Orlando zurueckgekommen, wo ich wieder im jaehrlichen Flower and Garden Festival teilgenommen habe. We wurden in einem tollen Disney Hotel (Animal Kingdom Lodge) untergebracht, wo wilde Tier, wie Zebras, Antilopen, Strausse und Giraffen direkt vor'm Fenster herumwanderten.

After the initial reception dinner the 16 plein air artists were excited to start painting on Friday morning. Unfortunately it started storming in the late afternoon and we had to break it off early. I did one nice painting of the San Marcus Plaza in Showcase Italy (my second time in that country) and a sketch.
Nach dem abendlichen Empfang mit Dinner waren wir 16 Plein Air Maler bereit, am Freitag morgen mit dem Malen anzufangen. Leider fing es an zu regnen am Spaetnachmittag und wir wurden frueher als geplant zurueck zum Hotel geschickt. Ich malte am Morgen ein Bild vom Markusplatz in Italien, wo ich dieses Jahr stationiert war, und eine kleine Zeichnung.

Saturday started unseasonably chilly and windy, but at least it was sunny. I managed to do 2 great paintings, one out on the boulevard looking towards Showcase America, and then one around the corner from my favorite I did 2 years ago. They will make a nice set.
Am Samstagmorgen war es sehr kuehl und windig, aber schoen sonnig. Ich malte 2 schoene Bilder, eine draussen am grossen Boulevard, der die verschiedenen "Laender" verbindet, und ein anderes am Nachmittag, das um die Ecke rum von meinem Lieblingsgemaelde vom vorigen Jahr war. Nun habe ich ein schoenes Set.

The first day, Austin, my fiance, was with me and enjoyed the park, and on Sat and Sun my daughter Kirsten joined me as a helper. I met several people I knew, and also got a chance to chat with many of the visitors. It's always nice to talk with kids and teens about painting and what they like in art.
Am ersten Tag war mein Verlobter Austin mit mir im Park, und am Samstag und Sonntag kam meine Tochter Kirsten vorbei, um mir zu hlefen. Ich traf etliche Leute, die ich kannte, und schwatzte auch viel mit Touristen. Es ist immer schoen, mit Kindern und Teenagers ueber Kunst und Malen zu reden.

Sunday was again a very nice and sunny day, it couldn't have been more perfect. I did more sketching with pen and a color wash, and finished 2 more paintings. In the morning I sold one of my paintings from 2 years ago to a very excited young man, who presented it to his girlfriend.
Am Sonntag war es schoen warm und sonnig, es konnte nicht besser sein. Ich skizzierte wieder ein paar Szenen, und malte noch 2 Gemaelde. Am Morgen kaufte ein sehr begeisterter junger Mann eines meiner Bilder vom letzten Jahr, und gab es dann seiner Freundin.

About 20 minutes before the finish on Sunday evening I sold the painting I did on Friday, having to add two teenagers to the couple I had painted on the plaza to make the visit of a family of 4 memorable. They were just about as excited as I was. I had never sold anything at this event, and this time two nice paintings! I was stoked, and am looking forward to next year again.
20 Minuten bevor wir einpacken sollten, verkaufte ich das Bild vom Freitag, musste jedoch die zwei Soehne der Familie schnell reinmalen. Sie waren ganz begeistert, und ich auch, denn ich hatte noch nie was in Epcot verkauft. Ich freue mich schon wieder auf naechstes Jahr!

Something different - etwas anderes

Hello everybody,
I entered a new painting in the Artist Workshop Exhibit which is still open til April in NSB at the Marine Discovery center. I was very excited about it, since I tried something new: I did some wilder, cooler colors in a more sketchy manner, and mixed some gold leaf in with the design. I painted this in the studio over 3 sessions, from a photo I took in St. Augustine. I like how the palms rise up against the side of the church, and how the dome was gleaming in the sunlight. So I wanted to emphasize this with the gold leaf. It looks quite different from various angles.
Mein neuestes Gemaelde daheim im Studio gemalt in 3 Sitzungen, von einem Photo in St. Augustine. Die wilden, kuehlen Farben, die ich sehr skizzenhaft hingeworfen hatte, sehen toll aus mit dem Goldblatt, das ich fuer die Kuppel und die Palmen benutzte. Das Gemaelde sieht sehr unterschieden aus, was total auf den Standort und das Licht des Raumes drauf ankommt.

In two weeks I will be painting at Epcot Flower and Garden Festival again. I will be in Italy again, and will try out some new painting methods... Wait for lots of pictures!

Demo at Tomoka Paintout

Happy new year to everybody!
I did a small demo at Tomoka State Park in Ormond Beach this past Saturday. We had great weather, it was cool, breezy and sunny (the second day was miserable and rainy). The womens art group that organized the event had several demos lined up, and I was the first one with a good crowd of about 12 fellow artists.

I malte eine kleine Demonstration im Tomoka State Park in Ormond Beach am Samstag. Es war herrliches Wetter, ein bisschen kuehl, aber mit tollem Sonnenschein. Es gab mehrere Demos, und ich war die erste und bekam eine gute Gruppe mit ca. 12 interessierten Kuenstlern.

I picked a backlit spot by the river, and explained my materials and techniques while I painted the small 10x8 in about an hour. It was hard to see the scene or any colors because the sun was right behind the scene, but everybody was impressed and said they learned a lot.
Ich waehlte diese Szene mit der Sonne hinter den Baeumen, was ein bisschen schwierig fuer uns war, da die Farben nicht gut zu sehen waren, doch jeder war imponiert und sagte, sie lernten was.

As usual, it was great fun.
We had one of the gals sitting in period costume sitting for a portrait demo, which I tried my hand on too, not much success. It was wonderful to hobnob with fellow artists again, and I had a wonderful time, especially when my demo painting sold at the end of the day.
Wie immer, machte mir so eine Demo viel Spass. Ich blieb noch ein bisschen laenger, um eine Portrait Demo anzuschauen und mit allen zu schwatzen, und am Ende des Tages kaufte jemand mein Demo-Gemaelde.

Sunday Morning painting

Hello all
I painted again, yeah! I drove to Ponce Inlet, while Austin started his run towards the same. It's a little over the distance of half a marathon (13.4 miles) from our house. By the time I set up and finished the painting, Austin met me at the lighthouse there. He wasn't even tired! He did a whole half marathon - isn't he nuts!
Ich konnte schon mal wieder malen! Ich fuhr zu Ponce Inlet, waehrend Austin von unserem Haus anfing zu joggen. Zum Leuchtturm ist es ein kleines bisschen weiter als ein halber Marathon (22 km). Als ich mit meinem Gemaelde ca. 2 Stunden spaeter fertig war, kam er um die Ecke gerannt. Er war nicht mal muede! Er rannte den ganzen halben Marathon - ist er verrueckt oder was!

It was a beautiful Sunday morning, warmer than expected. Here is the scene across from the lighthouse. Lots of boats in the yard, and I chatted with quite a few tourists and visitors. Very pleasant.
Es war ein schoener Sonntag Morgen, viel waermer als erwartet. Hier die Szene, direkt gegenueber vom Leuchtturm in Ponce Inlet. Viele Boote zum reparieren... Ich konnte mit etlichen Touristen schwatzen.

I took out some of the vehicles and other boats, and am very pleased with the result.
Ich liess einige Boote und Autos aus, und bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Gemaelde.

Canaveral Paintout 2014 - part 3

Friday night was a big party at one of the biggest art supporters, the Weinaugs. It was great with good food, live music, a wonderful view and everybody was there!

Am Freitag abend/nacht war eine grosse Party fuer uns alle im Haus der groessten Kunstliebhaber in der Gegend. Ein tolles Haus mit wunderschoener Ansicht, tollem Essen, Wein und Bier, live Musik, und alle waren da!

Most of us spent the rest of Friday and Saturday framing and finishing up hanging our pieces in the wet room, which was located at the Artist Workshop in downtown New Smyrna Beach. 

The panels for each artist were set up really well, there wasn't a bad spot in the bunch. Altogether we 26 artists produced a lot, and a lot of great stuff, too!

Die meisten Kuenstler rahmten und fertigten alle Gemaelde an, die wir dann im "Nassen Raum", unserer Gallerie in New Smyrna Beach, aufhingen. Alle Wandteile waren gut aufgesetzt und jeder hatte genug Platz. Zusammen hatten wir viele gute Gemaelde unter uns 26 Kuenstlern.

Meine Wand mit 3 rosa Verkauft Schildern, und das Bild in der Mitte im hellen Rahmen wurde auch am Ende der Nacht verkauft.

On Saturday evening during the final gala the patrons got their first peek at the artwork, even though a lot of it had already sold during the week. My Canal Street painting was already sold and gone, I was very pleasantly surprised. During dinner I sat next to a woman who turned out to be a buyer of one other painting of mine. That was really nice to chat with her.
Am Abend war dann der grosse Empfang, und die Sponsoren durften als erste alle Bilder sehen und kaufen. Viele Gemaelde waren schon waehrend der Woche gekauft worden. Mein grosses Bild von Canal Street war schon weg, ich war ganz ueberrascht. Beim Essen sass ich zufaellig neben einer Frau, die eines meiner kleinen Bilder vom letzten Jahr gekauft hatte, ich konnte mich gleich mit ihr unterhalten, siehe unten.

Altogether it was a great event, like every year, and very successful. I sold 4 paintings and couldn't be any happier! til next time. Ruth

Canaveral Paintout 2014 - part 2

Hier ist der 2. Teil meiner Erzaehlung

On Thursday I decided to set up on Canal Street again, my most favorite place in New Smyrna Beach, and tackle one of my biggest canvases yet, a 20"x16"! This was my second ever this size, and my self-built pochade box just about held it.
Am Donnerstag setzte ich meine Staffelei auf Canal Street auf, mein Lieblingsplatz in New Smyrna Beach, weil es dort historische und alte Gebaeude gibt, und das ganze ganz heimelig ist. Hier fing ich meine groesste Leinwand an, und meine selbstgebaute Staffelei und Malkasten hielten es grad noch aus.

I decided to go fast and a bit more sketchy than usual, because even though I found a nice shady corner, it was very hot. I painted the viewpoint of some storefronts along Canal St, in the bright glaring sunshine. I really liked how the palm trees came out, very sketchy and artistic. It took me about 2 hours to finish this, and then I was exhausted.

Ich entschied mich, schnell und etwas skizzenhaft zu malen, denn obwohl ich in einer schattigen Ecke stand, war es sehr heiss. Es dauerte ca. 2 Stunden, um das Gemaelde fertigzubringen.

In the early evening we all met at JB's Fishcamp as every year, and painted in that small area, with the sun going down. I decided to sketch a bit, instead of hauling out all my oils and whole setup. In the evening we had all displayed one painting for the auction, which went very well. My palm painting from Monday was sold, and I was so excited! One of the organizers bought it.

Am Abend trafen sich alle Maler und Organisateure und das Publikum bei JB's Fishcamp, ein uriges Restaurant am Halifax Fluss, und dort malten wir alle, bis die Sonne unterging. So konnten interessierte Leute uns alle auf einmal in Action sehen, denn sonst malen wir ja an ziemlich verschiedenen Orten weit voneinander entfernt. Ich skizzierte nur ein bisschen, da ich keine Lust drauf hatte, alles rauszuschleppen. Mein erste Gemaelde vom Montag mit der Palme in Herbstfarben wurde auf der Auktion verkauft, yeah!

On Friday morning I was signed up to do a demo. I had everybody meet in almost the same spot as I was the day before. There is an empty lot off of Canal, with an old house at the end. I had painted it a few years ago and it sold at Wolfe Gallery, so I decided to paint it as my demonstration piece, because I really liked the shadows on it.

Am Freitag Morgen traf ich mich mit dem lokalen Publikum (ca 12 Leute) in einem leeren Grundstueck, von wo man einen guten Blick auf ein altes Haus hatte. Dieses Haus hatte ich vor ein paar Jahren gemalt und in der Gallerie in Deland verkauft, so entschied ich mich, es nochmal zu malen als Demonstrationsstueck. Die Schatten auf dem schneeweissen Haus sind echt toll.

I started with explaining and showing my setup, my brushes and color selections of my limited palette, and then demonstrated how detail is not as important as large value shapes that are correct. Rather focus on the shadow and lights being correct than every brick and every leaf. That gives your painting impact from across the room and also captures the atmosphere and light - not to mention get you started correctly from the beginning, in case someone decides to park in the middle of your scene, as it happened during the demo.

Ich fing die Demonstration damit an, mein Setup, Farben und Pinsel zu erklaeren, und dann zeigte ich, dass es nicht so wichtig ist, viele Details zu haben, als dass man sich lieber auf die grossen Formen und die wichtigen Schatten/Lichtspiele konzentriert. Das gibt mehr Impakt, wenn man das Bild von weiter weg anschaut, und ausserdem macht es dann  nichts aus, wenn ploetzlich jemand in deiner Szene parkt (wie es uns ging), denn du hast nun schon die wichtigsten Dinge eingefangen in den ersten 5 Minuten. Schatten und Licht.

The painting went very well and I finished the whole canvas within about an hour and a half, with constant talking. I am very proud of this one and really like how it came out.

Ich fand, dass die Demo sehr gut ging, und obwohl ich ununterbrochen redete, hatte ich das ganze Gemaelde schon in weniger als 1.5 Stunden fertig.
