Long time, no blog! Sorry about that, but it has been super busy! So this one is gonna be really long...

I have been teaching at the Artists Workshop for 2 years now, and this spring season has been busier than ever. I did a 6-week class in Pen and Ink, with a 2 session lesson on enhancing your artwork with goldleaf (imitation and real 24 karat). Everybody enjoyed the class that just ended last week.
Vor gut 2 Jahren fing ich an, im Artists Workshop zu unterrichten, und nun wird es immer mehr. Ich hatte eine 6-woechige Klasse in Tuschezeichnung, wo ich fuer 2 Sessions auch zeigte, wie man seine Zeichnungen/Gemaelde mit Goldblatt verzieren kann (Imitation und 24-Karat). Jeder hatte viel Spass in der Klasse, die letzte Woche endete.

I also started a "Beginners Class - Explorations in Art", which I based on the premise that if you want to take up art as a hobby, you are probably lost in all the different media that are available to you. Which one is the best for your lifestyle, space availability, and temperament? Why would you buy a whole regiment of watercolors, only to discover you like pastels better?
Ich fing dann auch eine Klasse fuer Anfaenger an, die sich darauf gruendete, dass man als totaler Anfaenger nicht weiss, was alles angeboten wird, und was man braucht fuer was. Welche Technik ist die beste fuer meinen Lebensstil, Raum und Temperament? Warum sollte der Anfaenger alles kaufen fuer z.B. Aquarell, wenn er dann ploetzlich rausfindet, dass ihm Pastell besser gefaellt?

Nein, gestreifte T-shirts sind nicht erforderliche Uniform!

For an extra materials fee, I introduce total beginners to the most common/popular media:
charcoal
pencil
colored pencil
pastel
pen and ink
watercolor
acrylics
oils.
I bring in all the supplies, so everybody can explore and try it all out without having to buy all the materials. In the end, hopefully everybody has a feel for their favorite medium and then I can advise them on what is absolutely necessary to buy, and what they can live without.

Fuer eine extra Materialiengebuehr koennen meine Schuler alles frei benutzen. Ich stelle alles her fuer die beliebtesten Techniken/Media:

Ich bringe alle Materialien, Farben, Papiere und Leinwaende, so dass jeder alles schoen ausprobieren kann, ohne gross ins Geld zu gehen und ein Haufen unnuetzliches Zeug rumliegen hat. Am Schluss kommt dann hoffentlich jeder zu einer Entscheidung, was sein Lieblingsmedium ist, und dann kann ich ihn beraten, was man auf jeden Fall kaufen sollte, und was man eigentlich nicht so sehr braucht.

For the drawing media we spend 3 hours on each, and for the painting media in the end we are doing 2 sessions (6 hours total) on each. While exploring what each media can or cannot do, the students also learn a bit of drawing and painting, how to hold the tools, what substrate is the best, and some basics of painting and art history. I follow up each session with detailed emails and links to some artists that excel in that medium.
Die Zeichen-Techniken beschaeftigen uns je 3 Stunden, und fuer die Mal-Techniken werden wir 6 Stunden brauchen. Waehrend wir die verschiedenen Materialien ausprobieren, lernen die Schueler auch die Grundkenntnisse vom Zeichnen, wie man den Stift oder Pinsel richtig haelt, wo man drauf malen kann und wo nicht, und ein bisschen Kunstgeschichte. Unter der Woche emaile ich den Schueler interessante Websites und Studienhilfen, und Kuenstler, die die jeweilige Technik hervorragend benutzen.

Every session we start with drawing/painting an apple. That will give us the most creative exercise into three-dimensional shading which is absolutely essential in realistic art. Without correct and convincing shading your object won't appear to be "jumping off the page"or have any life. They are all doing great! After the apple we delve into a bit more of a scene to explore the medium and technique a bit further, but in the end, we can all "compare apples to apples" so to speak and not only see the progress, but also how different each technique is.
Jede Session fangen wir an, einen Apfel zu zeichnen/malen. Dies ist die beste Uebung fuer dreidimensionale Schattierung, was total wichtig ist in realistischer Kunst. Ohne die richtige und ueberzeugende Schattierung haben die Subjekte auf deinem Papier kein Leben. Alle Schueler sind echt gut und lernen schnell. Nach dem Apfel machen wir uns dann an eine interessantere Szene heran, entweder ein kleines Stilleben, oder eine kleine Landschaft, doch am Schluss kann dann jeder seine verschiedenen Aepfel vergleichen und nicht nur seinen Fortschritt sehen, sondern auch die verschiedenen Techniken gut vergleichen.

So anyway, I had a class for 10 people on Thursday mornings, but due to popular demand now also have 10 students on Monday evenings (those that work during the day requested this evening session). It's great to see that so many people are interested in learning to draw and paint! I will try to offer this again in the fall. It's so much fun to show beginners the "secrets of art".
Also hatte ich 10 Schueler im Donnerstagmorgen Unterricht, doch viele arbeiten, hatten jedoch grosse Interesse, und nun habe ich noch 10 Schueler am Montagabend (fuer Leute, die am Tage arbeiten)! Es ist echt toll, dass so viele Leute daran interessiert sind, Malen als Hobby aufzunehmen. Ich werde vielleicht im Herbst dann denselben Unterricht anbieten. Macht naemlich viel Spass, totale Anfaenger die "Geheimnisse der Kunst" zu zeigen.

In addition to these classes at the Artists Workshop, I also started teaching pencil drawing to students at the Sugar Mill Country Club. I have 12 ladies right now, and we explore the pencil and what we can do to it by utilizing the classic methods of copying simple subjects to learn about correct shading. We also learn about perspective and other principles that are important to make our artwork read right.
Dazu unterrichte ich auch einen Anfanger-Kurs im Clubhaus einer Nachbarschaft, die auf Golfspielen ausgerichtet ist. Ich habe 12 Damen, mit denen ich woechentlich Bleistiftzeichnen und Prinzipien der Schattierung, Perspektive usw. erkunde.

Happy New Year, and "Guten Rutsch!"
Wow, it's been almost a month since my last blog post. I apologize, but I'm sure everybody was just as busy as I was during the holiday weeks.
Wow, den letzten Blog habe ich vor einem Monat geschrieben! Tut mir leid, aber ich denke, dass jeder genauso beschaeftigt war in der Weihnachtszeit wie ich...

I had 2 commissions for pet portraits that the clients were surprising a family member with. Here are both Rylee in a more traditional realistic style, and Chloe in a modern whimsical style. Both were fun to paint, and I heard that the paintings were very well received!
Ich hatte 2 Auftraege fuer Gemaelde von Hunden, die eine Weihnachtsueberraschung fuer Familienmitglieder meiner Kunden waren. Hier sind Rylee (in einem mehr traditionalen, realistischem Stil), und Chloe (mehr modern und frech). Beide machten Spass, sie zu malen, und ich hoerte, dass die Gemaelde gut ankamen!

This week I started 2 new classes and got some very good responses - both classes are full! I am very excited to teach again, especially this time a 12-week course for total beginners. I am introducing them to the most common media (pencil/charcoal, colored pencil/pastel, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics, and oils) along with some art history, youtube links, demonstrations, etc.
Diese Woche fing ich mit dem Unterrichten wieder an, und hatte grossen Erfolg - beide Klassen sind voll! Einer der Kurse ist 12 Wochen fuer totale Anfaenger. Ich werde sie mit den beliebtesten Mediums bekannt machen (Bleistift/Kreide, Pastell, Tuschezeichnung, Aquarell, Akryl, und Oel) zusammen mit Kunstgeschichte, Youtube Videos, Demonstrationen usw.

New Classes coming Jan 2018!

Hello everybody!

Let's get the new year off to a great start of learning and exploring! I am scheduling 2 new classes starting early January at the Artists Workshop Studios. (map here)

On Monday afternoons, I will be offering Pen and Ink with Calligraphy and Goldleafing.
On Thursday mornings, I will be offering a "Beginner's Class to Art", introducing the most popular painting media and techniques.

MONDAY PM: Pen and Ink Class with Calligraphy and Goldleafing

starting Mon, Jan 8, 2018, 1-4pm at the Artists Workshop Studios

(members $80, non-members $95 per 6-week session)

In this class we will be exploring the exciting small pieces of art we can create with simple tools and materials. Pen and ink, colored with a wash of any water media, will capture sweet little scenes anywhere - and keep you in practice! In addition we will embellish our pieces with text by using simple calligraphy, and if there is interest, I will also introduce you to the wonderful technique of goldleafing to add that extra sparkle to any artwork!

Bring reference photos of what you want to sketch or choose from the assortment I will bring along.

Minimal art supplies needed:

-Pencil and eraser

-Pen, calligraphy pen, ink pen, microliner or similar

-Mixed media paper or sturdy card stock

-Your favorite water media: watercolor, acrylics or gouache

I will incorporate calligraphy and goldleafing depending on interest from the body of the class. I will provide all goldleafing supplies so you don't have to go to the expense of buying everything just to try it out. Doing the goldleafing will be an extra $10 per student.

THURSDAY AM: Beginners Class: The Basics of Painting

starting Thu, Jan 11, 2018, 9:30am-12:30pm at the Artists Workshop Studios

(members $80, non-members $95 per 6-week session)

This class will be two 6-week sessions consecutively, plus a $55 materials fee.

An introduction to the most popular media and their techniques and materials

If you have decided to make art a part of your life, but don't know where to start or which technique would best suit your lifestyle and temperament, this is the class for you! To go thru all 6 media will require the time of 12 sessions. Each session is 3 hours. The cost for the instruction is $160 ($190 for non-AWI members) plus $55 for all materials and tools. You will have to buy nothing up front. If you already have some art materials, please bring them along so we can compare and evaluate what else might be needed.

We will start with pencil and graphite sketching, then explore some colored pencil and pastel drawing. As a third technique we will continue with pen and ink drawing. Adding a gradated wash in ink, we will naturally progress to watercolor. We then will spend a couple of sessions trying out acrylics and oils. Each student should be able to go home with a completed small piece of art in each of the 6 most common media:
1. Pencil/Graphite
2. Colored Pencil/Pastel
3. Pen and Ink/Ink Wash
4. Watercolor
5. Acrylics
6. Oils
But the most important thing is that you will gain a broader knowledge of techniques and materials and can make a better decision in what would suit YOU to take up as a hobby!

These explorations in chunks of about 1-3 sessions (each session is 3 hours) in each medium will give you a good idea what you like and what would suit your life and ultimate goals of creating.
I will give you advice and tips of what to purchase, what is necessary and what you can do without, with links and recommendations as to further exploration via internet, books, and artists' newsletters.

Composition and Perspective class - recap

Hello everybody
For the last 6 weeks I have been teaching 10 students the principles of Composition and Perspective at the Artists Workshop studios in New Smyrna Beach. I emphasized the importance of "practicing" your painting by doing quick value sketches such as these below. You can do these by using a sharpie and concentrating on shadows and lights.

Die letzten 6 Wochen habe ich in New Smyrna Beach 10 Schueler gehabt, denen ich die Prinzipien von Komposition/Layout und Perspektive gezeigt habe. Ich betonte die Wichtigkeit des "Uebens", indem man schnelle Tonwert-Skizzen, wie die unten, macht. Man kann dies mit dicken Schwarzstift malen, und damit man nur auf die Schatten und Lichter aufpasst.

Once you have your picture divided into the light areas and the shadow areas, you can see if it results in a pleasing pattern and if you need to shift any elements around or do any editing by eliminating unnecessary items or adding people etc. It also helps you keep your colors clean and in the correct areas. Once you transfer your sketch onto your canvas, you just have to remember that all the colors in the dark areas need to be overall darker than all the colors in the light areas of your sketch. And as long as you keep your values correct, it doesn't matter what exact color/hue you are using.

Wenn man das Bild in Licht und Schatten aufteilt, sieht man auf einen Blick, ob es ein gutes "Muster" ist, und ob man irgendwelche Elemente rumschieben oder ganz auslassen sollte, um die Komposition besser zu machen. Das hilft auch, die Farben spaeter klar zu halten und sie in die richtigen Stellen zu setzen. Dunkle Farben bleiben im Schatten, helle Farbe in den weiss-gelassenen Lichtstellen der Skizze. Solange man sich daran haelt, ist es ziemlich egal, WELCHE Farben man benutzt, solange die Dunkel/Helligkeit der Farben stimmt.

Looks like a normal portrait, because the darks and lights are in their correct place. Only when you look consciously, you see that the shadow parts of the face are all made up of greens, blues and turquoise hues.

Auf den ersten Blick sieht es wie ein normales Portrait aus, da die dunklen und hellen Stellen in ihren richtigen Stellen sitzen. Nur wenn man es so richtig anschaut, sieht man, dass die schattigen Stellen des Gesichts in gruen, blau und tuerkis gemalt sind!

The same goes for my demo painting. Below is the actual painting upper left, and some color variations done on the computer. Each one has its merits in its own way and looks fine without being questioned about any "garish" or unconventional color. Green sky? Looks awesome!

Dasselbe kann ich hier in meinem DemonstrationGemaelde zeigen. Mein fertiges Bild ist links oben, und dann machte ich schnell per Computer andere Farbkombinationen, die alle auch toll aussehen, ohne dass der Betrachte sich sagen wuerde: Mann, das sind ja grelle Farben. Gruener Himmel? Sieht toll aus!

So, yes, I did a nice demo painting during the class. I took a photo of an old house that has been in restoration mode for months/years in downtown New Smyrna Beach. I loved how the palm trees surrounded it and threw their shadows towards it. 

Ja, das ist also meine Demonstration fuer die Schueler. Ich malte von einem Photo eines alten Hauses hier in New Smyrna Beach ab. Ich finde es toll, wie die schlanken Palmen das Haus umrahmen, und ihre Schatten auf es werfen.

I let my students decide which viewpoint to paint, which is a total frontal view, without any sides of the house visible. In 2 sessions I showed them what decisions I made to come to this particular composition by moving or stretching certain palm trees and exaggerating the shadows under the porch and on the house during the sketching phase. See value study above, done in 2 values: paper white and sharpie black. This is when I get excited about the potential of a painting, because you can see the pattern and if it works in black and white, it will definitely work in ANY color!

Meine Schueler durften den Blickwinkel aussuchen, den ich malen sollte. Das Haus ist direkt von vorne, also keine Seiten sichtlich. In 2 Sessions zeigte ich ihnen dann, warum diese Komposition gut wirkt, und wie ich einige Palmen umgepflanzt habe oder auch gestreckt habe, und wie die Schatten am Haus gut wirken, wenn man sie wirklich ohne Zoegern richtig dunkel malt. Die Tonskizze oben, in nur 2 Toenen: hell und dunkel. Und nach so einer Skizze werde ich dann ganz begeistert, das Bild auch zu malen, denn wenn es toll in schwarz und weiss aussieht, wird es auf jeden Fall gut in Farbe aussehen. In jeder x-beliebigen Farbe!

See progression of the painting. I started with placing elements in purple, then doing a crazy color wash in acrylics over that, and then starting in more or less realistic oil colors over that. During the 2 sessions I had the painting at home and could contemplate any changes. I felt that the house looked very lonely in a lonesome landscape, so I added the shed to the left, which really was there, and I believe adds now to the sense of the scene being more populated.

Meine animierte Progression des Gemaeldes. Wie immer, die Elemente in Lila, dann wilde duenne Farben in Akryl, und dann die mehr realistischen Farben in Oel drueber. Nachdem ich das Gemaelde daheim laenger anschaute, fand ich, dass es ein bisschen einsam wirkte, und malte dann in den letzten 10 Minuten den kleinen Schuppen links dazu, so dass die Landschaft ein bisschen mehr bevoelkert aussieht.

Hallihallo, ich hoffe, der Herbst ist herrlich bei Euch!

I have been working on my website for the last couple of weeks, and finished it. Its focus is now more on my art than myself. And I weeded out a lot of old artwork that I really don't think I should show anymore, since I've grown and learned so much in the recent years.

Die letzten paar Wochen habe ich meine Website ueberarbeitet, und sie ist nun fertig. Der Mittelpunkt ist nun meine Kunst, nicht so sehr ich. Und ich habe ziemlich viele alte Gemaelde rausgeschmissen, da ich die nicht mehr zeigen will. Ich finde naemlich, dass ich in den letzten paar Jahren viel gelernt habe und meine Kunst viel besser geworden ist. Hier clicken, um meine Website anzuschauen!

Last night we took the kids to Orlando where Rick Springfield gave a free concert as part of the WMMO Downtown Concert Series. We sat by the lake, had fried chicken and coleslaw while watching the spectacular sunset and listening to the opening bands. Finally at 8:30 Rick came on and Austin and I could revel in some nostalgia ;-)

Gestern abend fuhren Austin und ich mit den Kindern nach Orlando, wo Rick Springfield ein graits Konzert gab. Wir sassen beim Eola-See, assen gebratenes Huehnchen mit Krautsalat, waehrend wir den tollen Sonnenuntergang anschauten und den verschiedenen Bands zuhoerten. Endlich gegen 20:30 kam Rick auf die Buehne und Austin und ich konnten in Nostalgie waelzen ;-)

I did this 2-page spread of a pen and ink drawing right before the sunset, then colored it in gouache while the sun was almost gone. I was only guessing at the colors at that point, but it came out great.

Ich malte diesen zwei-seitigen Sketch mit Kugelschreiber (konnte meinen Kunststift nicht finden), als das letzte Sonnenlicht noch da war, und uebermalte dann mit Gouache waehrend der Daemmerung.

New Smyrna Beach Paintout Part 2

Continuation from yesterday's post....

On Wednesday morning I painted the iconic "Breakers" restaurant at the beach off of Flagler Ave. The pink house was dappled with purple shadows from the palm trees, and who can resist that? It was quite windy and still very hot, so I found the only palm tree in good view of my chosen scene. It was inhabited by some noisy crows that kept me company. I prayed they wouldn't "drop anything" on my painting! (I ended up with some of their gifts on my shirt, but oh well, I got a nice painting out of it)
Am Mittwoch morgen malte ich am Strand, ein bekanntes Restaurant mit dem Namen "Breakers". Das rosarote Haus hatte tolle violette Schatten von den Palmen, und da konnte ich nicht vorbeilaufen. Es war ziemlich stuermisch und immer noch sehr heiss. Ich fand Schatten unter der einzigen Palme, von der ich die Szene einigermassen gut sehen konnte. Einige laute Kraehen wohnten in der Palmkrone, und ich hoffte, dass sie nichts auf mein Gemaelde runterliessen! (Ich bekam einiges auf mein Tshirt am Ende, doch wenigstens wurde das Gemaelde verschont)

3 Hours after Sunrise - oil on panel 14"x11" (35cm x 25cm)

I went to the gallery for lunch to hang my "Old Florida" painting from yesterday morning. While having lunch, it sold right off the wall within 7 minutes! I was totally ecstatic!

Danach ass ich mein Mittagessen in der Gallerie, wo ich mein neuestes von gestern (Old Florida mit dem roten Dach) aufhing. Innerhalb von sage und schreibe 7 Minuten war es verkauft! Wow, ich war total ausser mir vor Freude.

In the afternoon I rested, and at 4:30pm all the artists were meeting at Outriggers Restaurant for sunset painting and the following live auction. I believe the patrons of the restaurant considered themselves very lucky to have all 25+ of us in one spot, creating paintings of the same scene. Well, we all did choose different scenery. Some painted boats looking into the sun, some the palm trees of Chicken Island, and some painted the diners at the restaurant or people at the nearby swimming pool. Very interesting what tickles each artist's bone.

Am Nachmittag ruhte ich mich aus, denn um 16:30 trafen sich alle Kuenstler am Outrigger Restaurant, um den Sonnenuntergang zu malen, und der Live Auction beizuwohnen. Ich glaube, die Leute im Restaurant fuehlten sich total beglueckt, dass alle 25+ Kuenstler am selben Platz und zur selben Zeit malten. Einige malten Boote, andere die Palmen von Chicken Island, und andere die Leute im Restaurant or im Swimming pool nebendran. Interessant, was verschiedene Kuenstler anregt.

Just as we all finished, the SpaceX Falcon 9 EchoStar was launched from nearby Cape Canaveral and with that beautiful sky we could follow it for several minutes. It was so cool! (Too fast to paint LOL)

Gerade als wir mit dem Malen fertig waren, wurde die SpaceX Falcon 9 Rakete von Cape Canaveral suedlich von uns hochgeschickt, und mit dem tollen klaren Himmel konnten wir sie sehr lange verfolgen. Das war ech tool! (Aber zu schnell zum malen, haha).

The live auction started at 7pm, and every artist had one painting to be auctioned off to help the fundraising for MDC and Friends of Canaveral. It went very well and we all had fun.

Dann fing die Auktion an gegen 19 Uhr, wo jeder Kuenstler ein Gemaelde anbot, um der Spendensammlung fuer die zwei Organisationen, denen 50% der Profite zukamen, zu helfen. Die Auktion machte viel Spass und brachte viel Geld ein.

On Thursday I had several of my current students sit with me as I painted a little street scene. I selected the shadiest spot I could find right in front of Outriggers, looking at the intersection leading towards MDC/Artists' Workshop. I did a semi-formal demo of the painting for them, and spruced it up at home.

Am Donnerstag kamen einige meiner Schueler, die ich gerade in Komposition und Perspektive unterrichte, um mir bei der Kreation eines Bildes zuzuschauen. Es wurde eine Quasi-Demonstration, und ich malte den Blick zu den Studios von Artists Workshop, wo ich unterrichte.

For the evening I visited with fellow German (!) artist Manon Sander at the penthouse she was staying in. One of her friends joined us from down south and we painted in the ante room. My first interior, but I cannot show it. Not quite a success, but hey, I tried, and we had lots of fun!
Am Abend lud mich Manon Sander, eine Kuenstlerin suedlich von hier, aufgewachsen in Berlin, zu ihrem Penthouse am Strand, wo sie untergebracht war. Ihre Freundin kam dann auch und wir malten eine "Innenszene" der Wohnung. Nicht zeig- oder rahm-bar, doch ich wollte das schon immer probieren, und mit ein bisschen Wein war es ein ganz toller Abend.

On Friday morning I met with another artist at the marina where it was VERY windy. I had to lean my pochade against the pillar of the pavillion we stood under, and painted the rather unusual view of looking past the walls of the old fort to the old library peeking out from behind, with the twisted cypress tree on top. Very "Hopperesque"...
Am Freitag morgen malte ich am sehr windigen Hafen mit einer anderen Kuenstlerin. Ich musste meine Staffelei gegen den Pavilion, wo wir standen, anlehnen. Ich drehte mich um und malte die gegenueberliegende Ruine des New Smyrna Beach Forts. Ich fand das fertige Gemaelde ziemlich "Hopperesque"/im Stil von Hopper, mit dem Dach der alten Buecherei und dem einsamen Zypressenbaum, der vom Wind verkorkselt war.

Friday night was a great party at the Weinaug's house at the river, who are the official organizers of the paintout this year. They also organize the Wekiva Paintout every year.

Am Freitag abend war die Party bei den Weinaug's, die den Paintout dieses Jahr uebernommen hatten. War ganz toll.

Saturday was a day to rest a bit and clean out the car that had accumulated all those painting supplies. At 6pm I went down to the gallery which had been moved to the back of Outriggers by the NS Marina and beautiful tents had been set up to accommodate the patrons and spectators to enjoy the new wall of art and the fantastic buffet of food and drink. A band from Orlando was playing and the artists had fun chatting with patrons and potential buyers, and dancing to the music. I got to know more of the artists more closely, and towards the end of the night I sold my kick-off painting that I did a month ago under the Dunlawton Bridge.

Am Samstag konnte ich mich endlich ausruhen, und ich raeumte mein Auto aus, das sich in ein fahrendes Studio entwickelt hatte. Um 18 Uhr ging ich zur Gallerie, wo tolle Festzelte aufgebaut waren, um die neue Wand voll mit Kunst schoen geltend zu machen, und die hunderten von Sponsoren und etwaigen Kaeufer mit Band, Essen und Trinken zu unterhalten. Ich konnte mich mit fast allen anderen Kuenstlern endlich unterhalten, und am Schluss des Abend verkaufte ich sogar mein Kickoff Gemaelde, das ich vor einem Monat hier gemalt hatte.

Recap: I produced 8 paintings in those 5 days, and sold 4 of them! Had a great time and the weather held out wonderfully (the last 2 paintouts were disrupted by Hurricanes). Next year's paintout has been moved to early December, so mark your calendars!

Im grossen und ganzen malte ich 8 Bilder in 5 Tagen, und verkaufte 4 davon! Ein toller Event und das Wetter hielt auch mit (die letzten 2 Jahre waren durch Hurrikanes unterbrochen). Naechstes Jahr wird der Paintout dann im Dezember stattfinden!
