Feedback and important lesson points

Here's a quick summary of some key points from the class I taught.

What I wanted to get across:
A good composition and a good pattern of light and dark is the foundation of a good painting! Details are just the highlights at the end! Don't rush into laying down color on the canvas - you need to first spend a couple of minutes thinking about the composition and value pattern - it's worth it!
You don't need to be an expert in perspective to get the key points right. Determine your horizon level and some of the vanishing points, remember where all the lines are heading, and it will make your viewing point more convincing and correct.

This workshop was excellent!  I learned some things I could immediately put into use.  It was obvious that Ruth cared that her students learned what she was teaching.   Her style of instructing was such that I felt comfortable, relaxed and confident that I’d be taking home some good information.  I’m thankful for the experience.  Ruth is a pleasure!
Your classes have been excellent.  I really enjoyed them and feel like I got a lot out of them.  I was wondering if you had time next week for a private lesson.  Your description of other classes is exactly what I’ve experienced  (I really hope that I taught more than just "paint like me, and then you have ONE nice painting", but then when you start your next painting, you will be lost.).  Yours was more helpful than all the others I’ve had put together.I really appreciate it and I look forward to seeing you sometime soon.

Can not believe that I thought for years that flat brushes weren't for me and that a notan wasn't that important. thank you  Also I really enjoyed your enthusiasm and patience. Doing a demo was very helpful!! Best to you in your art career!

Bethany B.
Your class was fun!  Something I learned was how to apply oil paint in an impressionistic way for interesting skies and water!  Thank you Ruth!

I really enjoyed your class at the Artists' Workshop.  Obviously I learned quite a lot about
getting the perspective correct and about really making sure the composition works.  I now see that there are many great photos that simply will not make a good painting - so, I liked your question "Why do you want to paint this?".
For me, however, the biggest learning point was really understanding  that you need to do the quick sketch and then the notan so that the dark/light values are in place.  I always tend to just jump into the painting without taking the time to think it out.  I am already seeing a difference in the composition as I am completing my painting I started of the little cottage.  Yes, I really like my greens now that I am mixing and not using just sap green and thalo green from the tube! I don't know that you could change much about the class.  If it is longer than 4 sessions you might have to not specifically do composition and perspective but rather just do students individually painting with your assistance.  You might also possibly do a plein air class that is 2 or 3 days.  I personally liked the 4 session class with the specific topic. Thanks so much for your time and comments during the class.  I will see you at the Paint Out in October!

Audrey R.
I was hoping at some time I could get together with you on a 1:1 for a few hours.  I would like to talk to you more about composition.  Is this possible? You explain things in such a way that resonates with me.  Thanks.

Composition and Perspective Class August 2016

Hello!
I just finished teaching my first short-term class at the Artist Workshop in New Smyrna Beach. It was focused on Composition and Perspective, something that I believe everybody has or still struggles with.
Hallo!

In the first class I talked quite a bit about the principles of perspective and did some quick small sketches illustrating those on several reference photos of mine and the students. I also introduced the notan sketches as a small and quick way of deciding on a composition and seeing right off the bat if anything needs to be moved. Patterns in simple black and white are quick to do and tell so much. In addition, it gives you a map of what parts to keep dark because they are in the shadows, and what parts need to be light overall because they are in the sunlight.
There were 11 students attending!

The second week I started a demo from one of my photos. I explained how to transfer the notan sketch with thinned paint onto a colored ground. There were NO details, but it gave a lot of impact already - by the virtue of having stark lights and darks.

In the second and the third class everybody started their own painting from their chosen reference photo, and I guided them individually at their work stations, and also did quick impromptu demos/lessons on items that popped up and everybody learned a bit more from that.
I demonstrated how to do the initial drawing, laying in the mass of shadows, and then adding the colors. In addition I talked about and showed on each photo/artwork how to work the perspective, made a quick diagram to help the students, and discussed in detail if we could improve the composition by leaving items out or moving them. I did a notan (black and white quick value sketch), and a perspective diagram on everyone's photo to get them started individually and to talk through as many pieces as possible.

In the beginning of the last class the students watched me add more detail and smaller flecks of color/paint throughout to get the boat painting to a closer finish (which I did at home, see final painting below). All the students had at least one painting finished or did the last brushstrokes in this last hour. We then gave a quick overview and critique on each painting and discussed what we learned.

Awaiting the Journey - new oil painting

Hello again!
About 2 weeks ago Austin and I took our bikes on a marathon ride (exactly 13 miles from our house there, and then back) down to Ponce Inlet in 95° F heat. At the Sea Love Boat Works they had a lot of cool boats propped up to work on, so I decided this week to go down there and paint a scene.

The Szene / Die Szene

With the manager's permission I set up in the shade of a boat, because even in the morning it was very humid and hot again. The shade was great, and in a little over 2 hours I did this painting, which I think is my best this year! I had a lot of fun painting the scene, and touched up just some minor details at home.

And here are some progression shots, since I haven't shown that in a while. I started on a red background, which was a great choice!

Til next time, Yours truly Ruth

Gouache is awesome!

Here are some more gouache sketches from recent weeks:

North Miami Beach (the clouds were wonderful!) from the balcony of our 8th story hotel room at a recent weekend trip. Underground was blue acrylic, and some wonderful blue hueswere picked up, and left happy bits and pieces in the whole painting.
Nord Miami Beach, wo die Wolken sagenhaft waren. Von dem Balkon unseres Hotelzimmers auf der 8. Etage gemalt.

Today we went with friends to Disappearing Island at Ponce Inlet and some wonderful strong storm clouds surrounded the whole island. It never rained on us, but lightning hit a few miles away and we could see a huge smoke plume on the way home. I always wanted to paint a storm, so I finally got my wish. It was really a great experience.

Austin, my husband, played around on his guitar for a bit, so I sketched him for 20 minutes. I told him he didn't need to pose, and of course he moved around quite a bit. But I was pretty happy to have captured him quite well.

Summercamp Art Is...Creation

Art Is... Creation and its founder/organizer Regina Wise finished out their 4-week summer camp program this week. They invite local artists to teach for their 2-week artist camp for elementary kids, and 2-week teen camp. For the first time, I volunteered my time and talent and taught one day for each age group. It was a lot of fun. The summer camp is held at the studios of the Artist Workshop in New Smyrna Beach.

For the elementary kids (age 5-10) I taught about pointillism. For weeks before I had gone to home improvement stores to pick up the paint swatches and cut them into small squares. I then showed the kids some samples of Seurat and some impressionists, and then we got into gluing the different colors onto paper. We kept the highlights, midtones and shadow tones separately, and even though it became a bit tedious at the end, once we had all the artwork lined up, the kids were excited how great and "3-D" they all looked. It made a big impact.

Everybody's finished artwork and one enlarged.
Alle fertig, und eines in Detail.

For the teen camp, I taught how to structure your doodling to make it a piece of art. Everybody doodles, especially in school, in the corner of a notebook, or when bored, so based on the fantastic patterns of the new craze of the Adult Coloring Books, I showed them how to break down an idea (an animal, a landscape, a word, etc) into big shapes and then to fill those shapes with easy repeating patterns to make a great impact and unique piece of art.

All the kids worked intensively on their art, and the volunteers and adults remarked how quiet the room got. Every teen came up with a totally unique idea and how to fill it, there were some great pieces. We reviewed them at the end, and discussed how different and cool each one looked.

Below are mine, I made an initial, and a landscape.

It was great fun, and I will be volunteering and teaching again next year. Now I'm preparing to teach my composition and perspective class to adult artists at the Artist Workshop in August.

Perspective and Composition class in August

Hello everybody!
If you are interested in learning PERSPECTIVE and COMPOSITION in a fun and relaxed, but hands-on way, then please consider signing up for my 4-week class in August, held at the Artist Workshop in New Smyrna Beach every Thursday morning! You all know that I have been painting mostly landscapes for over 20 years. I have given demos and classes in the past, and with my hands-on, easy approach you will learn how to see perspective and angles the correct way. In addition my experience as a graphic artist for over 20 years has helped me with composition - the HOW and WHY to place various elements in your artwork, be it landscape or still life.

FOR THE CLASS:
This is for ANY media, as we are learning CONCEPTS.
Just bring your regular painting materials and canvases, and maybe a small sketchbook and pencil or charcoal for quick studies. I want to encourage to also bring some of your finished paintings, or ideas, that you would like to have gently critiqued to illustrate the points, and/or photos that you usually or later intend to paint from.
I am very hands-on and informative. I rather teach on materials and scenes that interest the students than some dry theoretical stuff that is hard to grasp. It's always easier to understand something if it's demonstrated on something concrete and in front of your eyes.
I will focus on distance, boats, meandering paths and creeks, and buildings/urban landscapes. But please feel free to make suggestions or ask anything else that relates to painting!

HOW TO SIGN UP:
Please email me at krautgraphics@gmail.com, or call me direct at 386-451-6857 to sign up. Payments are made directly to me, and I will inform the Artist Workshop of your attendance. You do not have to be a member of the AWI.
I know that this is the end of summer and some of you might just be getting back into town. Since we are learning from examples you and I bring in, you will benefit even if you only attend one or two of the sessions, which will then be prorated at $25/session.

Classes are held every Thursday morning in August from 9:30am til 12:30pm
(Aug 4, Aug 11, Aug 18, Aug 25) and the total cost is $100.
Classes are at the studios of the Artist Workshop, 540 Barracuda Blvd, New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

I sure hope you can make it!

More gouache sketches

Hello everybody!
Currently, I love sketching in gouache (professional poster paints). Right now I'm practicing with my travel kit that I intend to bring with us when we visit Germany and Italy later this year. I am excited to hopefully bring back some really cool sketches of the old architecture and plazas there.

Last week I sat in our front yard and painted the effects of the setting sun on our street. It looks so lovely with the pinks and purples.

The next day we went to the band shell at the beach in Daytona Beach, where there's a free concert every Saturday in the summer. This one was a cover band playing U2 songs. The sun was just setting, so the bright orange ground was perfect for that.

In addition I also like to switch it up with some mixed media collages. Recently some friends of ours attended their daughter's wedding, and I painted a custom collage of their vacation home in Cabo San Lucas, where we stayed back in April.

More to come real soon! Ruth
Ruth

Interested in taking my composition/perspective class at the Artist Workshop?

Hello everybody
I want to announce that I am going to teach a 4-week class at the Artist Workshop in New Smyrna Beach in August. It will be every Thursday morning from 9:30AM-12:30PM, starting Aug 4.

COMPOSITION AND PERSPECTIVE IN ALL MEDIA - Studio B, Short term class, 4 weeks, $100.00 krautgraphics@gmail.com 386-451-6857 Starting Date: August 4. 2016

Sometimes it is hard to interpret and transpose the correct perspective of a photo or scene artistically on to a canvas. This class will explore how to move elements around, what can be left out, and how values and colors can all be combined to make a great finished work of art. Using your own photos or paintings, we will learn how to achieve a strong composition. These techniques can be used for any medium. Contact instructor for information or questions.

Please consider joining me - you can paint in any medium. I encourage you to bring finished paintings, photos or ideas you have in mind to paint and need some beginning help, or a painting that you are stuck with.

Here are some recent small studies I did on location that show a strong sense of perspective. We will explore the intricacies of buildings, streets and paths which include meandering creeks and rivers, boats, and far views like mountains.

Please call me to sign up at 386-451-6857, or call the Artist Workshop at 386-424-9254.
Hope to see you there! Ruth

Lighthouses and Boats

Hello!!!
I haven't posted anything for a while, but was busy!
The first two are some small sketches with my travel gouache (opaque watercolor) kit. I took it to Disappearing Island between NSB and Ponce Inlet, where we spent the day with friends last weekend. The clouds were great, the sun not too much, and I could sit on the cooler and paint these two scenes of the Ponce Inlet lighthouse.

Then on Tuesday I met with my German painting buddy Irene under the Dunlawton Bridge to paint the shrimp boats that are usually docked there. It was nice and breezy under the bridge where we painted in the shadow of a palm tree. I painted in oils on a panel that I had toned/painted in black. It really makes the colors pop while you're painting. This is 14"x11" and took about 2 hours.

Til next time! Have a great summer! Ruth

Deleon Springs and Mexico!

Hello again!
3 weeks ago I was invited again to act as a judge at the spring festival in Deleon Springs. They have a wonderful community spirit, a great setting, and really neat arts and crafts. Local artist Jan Obendorfer was my fellow judge, and we had a hard time selecting first place. There were many cool pieces we've never seen before.
Hallihallo,

Here we are with one of the winners.
Hier sind wir mit einem der Gewinner.

Last weekend Austin and I went with his work partners and their wives to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. What a wonderful place! I couldn't get over the rocky beaches, crashing waves, sea lions and dolphins, beautiful blooms in the rich neighborhoods, and dry/arid landscape everywhere else.
Was fuer ein toller Ort!

Land's End

Between taking long walks in the neighborhoods, checking out the local market, snorkeling and discovering the beaches around Land's End, I had a bit of time to sketch. The long views are from the rooftop of the house we stayed in, and the last is from the beach near Land's End, the famous landmark at the southern tip of the Baja island.

What a wonderful time and awesome landscape/sights! It's really beautiful there.

Ruth
