How do we know that Wittighausen was "born" in 1060? Well, it was first mentioned in a document on June 22, 1060, when King Henry IV (1056-1106) signed a certificate, in which he conveyed a huge area of land to Bishop Adalbero of Wuerzburg. It describes the area encompassing today's community of Wittighausen. The village of Unterwittighausen was mentioned in 1060 in  this official document, and in the year of 1243 there was mention of "Inferior Witegehusen" (Unterwittighausen), in contrast to "Wittingenhusen superior" (Oberwittighausen). Woher wissen wir, dass Wittighausen in 1060 "geboren" wurde? Nun, es wurde erstmals am 22. Juni 1060 erwaehnt, als König Heinrich IV. (reg. 1056-1106) in Corvey eine Urkunde unterschrieb, in der er Bischof Adalbero von Würzburg (Graf von Lambach, reg. 1045-1085) den Wildbann in einem riesigen Gebiet um die Stadt abtrat. Der Ort Unterwittighausen wurde im Jahre 1060 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt und im Jahre 1243 wird erstmals „Inferior Witegehusen“ (Unterwittighausen) genannt, im Gegensatz zu „Wittingenhusen superior“ (Oberwittighausen). A decade ago, in 2010, the community of Wittighausen celebrated the 950th birthday in a huge way. Throughout the year we had celebrations with a large summer festival, parties, special church services, demos, kids activities, lectures, etc. Wittighausen (with a current population of around 1,630 in 12 square miles) consists of 4 small villages, Unterwittighausen, Oberwittighausen, Poppenhausen and Vilchband. As small as these villages are, they each have their own church, with Oberwittighausen sporting a second chapel that is famous for its rare octogonal architecture (only 3 in the area of Franconia). (My final art thesis in secondary school in Germany dealt with this chapel - and I got an A for it.)

Vor einem Jahrzehnt, in 2010, feierte die Gemeinde Wittighausen den 950. Geburtstag mit Festen, Kirchenfeiern, Umzuegen, Veranstaltungen, etc. Wittighausen hat ca. 1630 Einwohner und besteht aus 4 kleinen Doerfern: Unterwittighausen, Oberwittighausen, Poppenhausen und Vilchband. Natuerlich hat jedes Dort eine Kirche, und noch eine schoene Kapelle in Oberwittighausen, die sehr beruehmt ist, da sie nur eine von 3 oktogonalen Bauten in der Gegend ist. (Ich schrieb meine Abiturarbeit ueber die Sigismund-Kapelle - und bekam eine Eins.)

I was commissioned to paint large oil paintings of each of the 5 churches, which were then turned into postcards for sale. My parents were visiting me the year before here in Florida and were able to take the paintings with them in their suitcases, saving lots of shipping cost!, and since then the originals have been on display in the city hall in Unterwittighausen, steps from where I grew up.

Fuer das Fest wurde ich beauftragt, jede der 5 Kirchen in Oel festzuhalten. Diese Oelgemaelde wurden dann u.a. als Druckpostkarten verkauft. Meine Eltern besuchten mich im Jahr vorher in Florida and konnten dann die Gemaelde in ihren Koffern mitheimbringen, was sehr viel Porto sparte! Nun haengen die Bilder seither im Rathaus in Unterwittighausen!

My cousin Edgar Braun, who still lives in the area, is a graphic designer and publishes lots of small booklets about Wittighausen and its community. He did a whole publication about the festivities in 2010, here is the link. Check it out! (Unfortunately I couldn't visit during that year, so I missed all of the action! Also, disclaimer, the animal on page 27 is NOT native to our area...LOL).

Mein Cousin Edgar Braun, der noch in der Gegend wohnt, ist Grafik Designer und gibt viele Hefte heraus, die ueber Wittighausen und seine interessanten Einwohner, Gebauede und anderem erzaehlen. Er schrieb ein ganzes Buechlein ueber das Fest in 2010, hier kann man's anschauen. Leider konnte ich in dem Jahr Deutschland nicht besuchen, ich verpasste also die ganze Gaudi! Und als kleine Erklaerung fuer meine amerikanischen Freunde: das Tier auf Seite 27 ist nich heimisch... haha.

Trip to Germany/Europe Part 1

Hello everybody!

Hallo Ihr alle!

I haven't posted in almost 3 months! But a lot has happened.

We were traveling through Europe for almost a month, and as soon as we came back, I participated in the local NSB Paintout. So there will be lots of posts coming in the next couple of days!
Ich habe schon ewig nicht mehr geschrieben, das letztemal vor 3 Monaten! Aber viel ist in der Zeit passiert. Wir reisten fast einen Monat durch Europa, und als wir zurueckkamen, nahm ich an unserem Paintout hier in New Smyrna Beach teil. Es wird also viel von mir kommen in naechster Zeit!

I will start with the first half of our Europe trip.

As usual, Austin and I stayed in private homes and rooms, which is a lot of fun. You can pack really light, as you can wash your clothes, and you don't have to go out to a restaurant every single meal, as Austin loves to cook in a different kitchen every time, and we both love to explore the local supermarkets! You always find interesting items.
Ich werde mit der ersten Haelfte von Europa anfangen.
Wie immer buchten Austin und ich unsere Unterkuenfte in Privathauesern und -zimmern, was uns viel Spass macht. Da man dort waschen kann, kommen wir mit dem kleinsten Koffer aus. Und da wir beide gern in fremden Supermaerkten rumschnuppern und Austin gerne kocht, muessen wir nicht jede Mahlzeit in einem Restaurant einnehmen.

The other things we love to do is - Austin having a beer and do some people-watching, and me doing some urban sketching. We couldn't make a better team!
Was wir sonst noch moegen: Austin trinkt gern ein Bier und beobachtet die Leute, waehrend ich schnell (Stadt)Zeichnungen mache. Wir koennten also kein besseres Team sein!

We traveled from the North of Germany down the Eastern side, then spent some days in Prague, Czechia, back into Germany to spend a good week with my parents near Wuerzburg, and then on the flight back we spent 3 days in Copenhagen, Denmark. As usual, we didn't get a rental car, but relied on the awesome train system. And also as usual, we had great weather. During the whole month we had less than 2 hours of rain in total and it was a comfortable 60-70 degrees.
Wir fingen im Norden in Hamburg an, fuhren dann mit dem Zug an der Ostseite von Deutschland entlang, waren 3 Tage in Prag, dann zurueck nach Deutschland, wo wir fuer eine gute Woche meine Verwandten besuchten. Auf dem Heimflug blieben wir 3 Tage in Copenhagen, Daenemark. Wie immer, hatten wir tolles Wetter. Den ganzen Monat hatten wir 15-20 Grad und insgesamt ca. 2 Stunden Regen.

As usual I draw a map, showing our trip. Maps are a lot of fun to draw, and you can customize them to your liking. I finished a whole sketchbook again (36 pages) - I'm only happy if every day contains at least one sketch! 

Wie immer fing ich mein Skizzenbuch mit einer Landkarte an, das macht immer viel Spass, denn man kann auslassen, was man nicht braucht. Ich malte wieder das ganze Buch fertig (36 Seiten) - ich bin nur gluecklich, wenn jeder Tag mind. eine Skizze bringt.

Die zwei oberen Skizzen sind das Rathaus in Hamburg, und dann der Hauptbahnhof, wo wir auf den Zug nach Cuxhaven warteten.

Germany has beaches at the North Sea, and the special thing in that area is that the tide goes out for miles. In Cuxhaven, it went out about 8-12 miles, depending on your exact location. It's very popular to do a "Wattwanderung" (hike on the sand during low tide), however the warnings about getting back in time before high tide put the fear of water in your heart! We took a guided tour and walked out about 3 miles, discovering sea life and getting a lecture on the history and economics of the area.

Obig erklaere ich den Leuten hier in Amerika, wie weit das Meer in der Nordsee rausgeht, und dass wir eine Wattwanderung mitmachten. Das machte viel Spass, vor allem, da es fast total windstill war (sehr selten!) und herrlicher Sonnenschein.

The next day Austin booked a tour at the Beck's Brewery in Bremen, and when I saw the main square, I told him to go alone and I would sketch this wonderful panorama. I had the best afternoon! This was was really thought out and took me about 2 hours, instead of the usual 10-20 minutes for the little standard sketches. It was well worth it!

Am naechsten Tag buchte Austin eine Tour in der Beck's Brauerei in Bremen, doch als ich den Marktplatz sah, ging er allein auf die Biertour, waehrend ich 2 glueckliche Stunden mit diesem Marathon-Sketch verbrachte. Es war eine sehr ausgeplante Zeichnung und total die Zeit wert!

Leaving Hamburg we stopped for a short day in Leipzig, and then went off to Dresden. What a great city! Old mansions throughout town, and the magnificent Frauenkirche, that was almost totally destroyed in WWII, but has been marvellously rebuilt. While walking around, we spotted a sketching group and we chatted for a while. They were very interested in my sketch book and we exchanged tips on materials and techniques.

Nach Hamburg stoppten wir kurz in Leipzig, und dann 3 Tage in Dresden. Was fuer eine herrliche Stadt mit alten Herrenhaeusern und der tollen Frauenkirche! Als wir dort herumliefen, stiessen wir auf eine Zeichengruppe und wir plauderten ein bisschen. Die Zeichner waren sehr interessiert an meinem Skizzenbuch und wir tauschten Tips ueber Materialien und Technik aus.

From Dresden it's a short hour train ride to the Saechsische Schweiz (Saxonian Switzerland) which is a small area by the river Elbe that has majestic and interesting rock formations (that's why it's called Switzerland). We hiked to the Bastei, which is an old fort with an arched bridge built centuries ago high up in those mountains. The view is spectacular, and I was in the footsteps of Germany's famous Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, who painted (in his own romantizied style) the exact same view (he left out the bridge).

Von Dresden war es nur eine knappe Stunde in die Saechsische Schweiz, wo wir zur Bastei hochliefen. Der Blick und das Panorama war ja atemberaubend. Ich stand in den Fussstapfen des beruehmtesten Romantischen deutschen Malers Caspar David Friedrich, der dieselbe Sicht malte (obwohl er die Bruecke ausliess und es total romantisierte).

Off to Prague! We had a wonderful apartment right in the center of the city and took a 6-hour guided tour on our first day. This was very interesting, as the city is full of history and great architecture. I did tiny sketches at every stop and soon was the marvel of our tour group. As a matter of fact, when I stand there and sketch I get a lot of interest, and many Asian tourists want to take a picture with me!

Nun zu Prag! Wir hatten eine tolle Wohnung in der alten Stadtmitte und am ersten Tag zogen wir uns die Geschichte rein mit einer 6-stuendigen Tour. Das war sehr interessant, ich malte klitzekleine Skizzen an jedem Stop, und war bald der Mittelpunkt unserer Tourgruppe. Wenn ich in den Staedten male, werde ich oft angesprochen, was mir nichts ausmacht, und vor allem asiatische Touristen wollen immer ein Bild mit mir machen!

Skizzen von Prag, alle ca. 3-5 Minuten, ausser der Karlsbruecke unten rechts. So viel tolle und alte Architektur, ich koennte hier Monateland malen und zeichnen!

On our second day in Prague we wandered around on our own, and finally found the famous "Dancing House". Well, famous only for American tourists. Our tour bus drove right by, and when we asked our guide the day before why we didn't stop, she asked why. It's also called "Fred and Ginger house", and apparently it's not worthwhile to European tourists. Well, we went up to the viewing platform where I did a cute sketch of the Prague Castle across the river Moldau.

An unserem 2. Tag in Prag wanderten wir auf eigene Faust herum, und fanden endlich das beruehmte "Tanzende Haus". Nun, beruehmt anscheinend nur in Amerika. Gestern fuhr unser Tourbus gradewegs daran vorbei, und als wir die Fuehrerin fragten, warum wir dort nicht anhielten, fragte sie warum? Es heisst auch "Fred und Ginger Haus", da es wir das bekannte Tanzpaar aussieht, und wie herausgefunden, sagt das den Europaern nicht viel. Sehr lustig. Nun, wir gingen hoch auf die Aussichtsplattform und ich zeichnete den Blick auf's Prager Schloss mit der Moldau unten.

Wekiva Paintout 2019!

It's been a week since I've come back from the Wekiva Paintout. This was my second year, and it was even better than last time!
Letzte Woche nahm ich wieder am Wekiva Paintout teil, und es war so gut, wenn nicht sogar besser, als letztes Jahr!
Bill and Marysue Weinaug, the owners of Wekiva Island, and the organizers of the Paintout, gave the 25+ artists free accommodations at the Wekiva Springs Park, great food throughout the week, and parties and galas along with the accessibility to the many wonderful patrons and sponsors!

I was bunking with Manon Sander, Michelle Held and Elizabeth St. Hilaire in the largest cabin at the park, where we had lots of fun and shared many giggles and serious art talk.

We had great weather except for one half-dreary cooler day, where we all painted together in the cabins and/or mess hall. For me personally it was a great opportunity to get to know the artists much better and share knowledge, art critiques and questions.
Das Wetter war toll, bis auf einen kuehleren nieseligen Tag, wo wir alle zusammen in den Kabinen oder im Gemeinderaum. Fuer mich persoenlich war das eine gute Chance, die verschiedenen Kuenstler besser kennenzulernen, und Wissen und Fragen ueber Kunst auszutauschen.

As a kickoff piece I took hubby Austin's favorite painting off his office wall. I had painted it at the bar during last year's paintout on the last day, and it didn't sell. Well, to Austin's chagrin, this painting was the first one to sell that week! One of the beer distributors bought it!
Fuer das erste Gemaelde fuer meine Wand nahm ich Austin's Lieblingsgemaelde aus seinem Buero. Ich hatte es letztes Jahr im Paintout am letzten Tag bei der Bar gemalt, und es wurde nicht gekauft. Nun, zu Austin's grosser Enttaeuschung war dies das allereste Bild, das im Paintout 2019 verkauft wurde! Einer der Biervertreiber/haendler schnappte es auf!

I painted with Michelle and Elizabeth on the edge of the river, and I wanted to try my hand on something I usually don't do: details of organic forms! (My favorite subject are urban landscapes LOL) It came out really nice, this plant has very glossy reddish leaves that are small and are surrounded by the more greenish-gold larger mature leaves. It was really fun to paint. Just as I finished the painting, the wind pushed it off my easel, but I caught it with my back and not too much smeared.

Ich malte am ersten Tag mit Michelle und Elizabeth am Fluss, und wollte mal was neues ausprobieren, was ich normalerweise nie male: organische Formen in Detail! (Wie ihr wisst, ist mein Lieblingssubjekt staedtische Landschaften). Ich fand es sehr gelungen, diese Planze hat glaenzende rote neue Blaetter, die schoen von den aelteren gruen-goldenen Blaettern umgebene sind. Es hat viel Spass gemacht, auf die Leinwand zu bannen. Als ich gerade fertig war, kam ein Windstoss und warf das Bild auf mich, so dass mein Ruecken auch ziemlich Farbe abbekam. Ich konnte jedoch alles an Ort und Stelle "reparieren".

This one sold during the gala on Saturday. I had painted this iconic scene on a board that I gessoed in black, which is a great way to paint, because any color you add just really pops. The little bits of black showing through at the end give it a cohesive coloring that make all the element stand out a bit more.

Dieses Gemaelde wurde waehrend der Gala am Samstag abend gekauft. Ich malte diese sehr bekannte Szene auf einem Brett, das ich mit Schwarz grundiert hatte. Das macht sehr viel Spass, denn egal welche Farbe man drueber malt, sie leuchtet sehr im Gegensatz zu dem Schwarz. Und am Schluss sehen die Farben total gut aus, wenn ein bisschem von dem Schwarz hier und da durchschaut.

Another one that I would NEVER paint on my own. I was driving around with Michelle to find some orange trees, and while we saw a huge alligator sunning on the side of the road, and some beautiful sunflowers, no orange tree was to be found. We then turned into a nursery where the owner was super nice and very willing to give us a spot in the greenhouse. Michelle did a great closeup of three oranges, while I tried my hand on this overwhelmingly green and organic scene of looking along the aisle of plants for sale. This was one of my favorite paintings at the end of the week! Thanks Michelle for pushing me to do something out of the ordinary!

Noch eines, das ich NIE selber als Subjekt ausgesucht haette! Ich fuhr mit Michelle in der Gegend herum, auf der Suche nach einem Orangenbaum. Wir sahen zwar einen riesigen Alligator am Strassenrand, und einige schoene Sonnenblumen, doch keinen Orangenbaum, bis wir dann endlich eine Gaertnerei fanden, wo uns der liebe Besitzer und Gaertner herumfuehrte und uns Platz in einem der Gewaechshaeuser machte. Michelle malte ein tolles Detail mit 3 Orangen, waehrend ich mich daran versuchte, diese sehr gruene und organische Szene einzufangen. Dies war mein persoenliches Lieblingsbild am Ende der Woche. Danke Michelle, dass du diesen Platz ausgesucht hattest!

And the next day my other friend Manon pushed me to try something new! We rented canoes and paddled up the Wekiwa river to tie up in the lily pads and paint something up close. Again, I would never do that on my own! The morning was beautiful, and lots of people paddled by in canoes and kayaks with lots of (positive) comments. I later learned that these are not water lilies, but "spatterdock" that bears little yellow button flowers that never really open (I put one in the center back).

Und am naechsten Tag wieder was ausserordentliches mit Manon! Wir nahmen uns ein paar Kanus und paddelten den Wekiwa Fluss rauf, wo wir uns in den Seerosen verankerten und dort im Kanu malten. Wie gesagt, sowas wuerde ich nie alleine machen! Es war nicht gerade toll, im Sitzen zu malen, im kleinen Kanu, wo man nicht vom Gemaelde wegtreten konnte, um es "ganz" zu sehen, doch die vielen Leute, die vorbeipaddelten, hatten viele positive Kommentare. Ich lernte spaeter, dass es nicht Seerosen sind, sondern "Spatterdock", das kleine gelbe Blumen hat, die sich nie oeffnen.

During the week we had a live auction, with all the proceeds of the artwork going towards Wekiva Wilderness Trust and Keep Seminole Beautiful, as do most of the other profits during the week.

Durch die Woche durch gab es eine Live Auction, wo 100% des Erloeses an die zwei Organisationen Wekiva Wilderness Trust and Keep Seminole Beautiful kommen, was auch mit 50% des Erloeses der anderen Kunstwerke passiert.

Waehrend der Gala wurde ich vom Vorstand der Florida Native Plant Society interviewt, da meine "organischen" Subjekte ihm schoen in die Augen stachen.

Sketches from Spain

Hello and Hola!
We are back from Spain, and I filled another whole sketchbook with travel drawings and impressions from the road. I did 32 sketches, all started with freehand without pencil. Pen and ink, then a color wash in watercolor, usually on site, sometimes added in the evening while relaxing. Enjoy!
Wir sind von unsere Spanienreise zurueck, und ich habe wieder mal ein ganzes Skizzenbuch mit Reisezeichnungen und Impressionien gefuellt. Ich malte 32 Skizzen, alle mit Tinte angefangen, ohne Vorzeichnung in Bleistift, und dann eine Faerbung drueber in Aquarell. Vie Spass beim Anschauen!

I always do a sketch of the map, to show where we've gone. We flew via Lisbon to Madrid for 3 days, then had a two-day stint in Toledo, went down south for 5 days to Sevilla, where we took day trips to Tangier, Morocco via the Strait of Gibraltar, and to the Whitewashed Hilltowns of Andalusia. Then we flew for 2 days to Mallorca and enjoyed the clearest water in the most beautiful rocky coves, then up to Barcelona. There we experienced the excitement of the La Merce festival that was going on, with Fire Runs, Human Pyramids, and Parades with Giant Statues, along with lots of free concerts and exhibitions. After seeing the different faces of Spain, we flew to Germany to visit with my family for a week.

Ich male immer eine Landkarte, um unsere Route zu zeigen. Wir flogen ueber Lissabon nach Madrid fuer 3 Tage, dann 2 Tage in Toledo. Danach ging's mit dem Zug nach Sevilla, wo wir ein paar Tagestrips nach Tanger, Marocco und zu den weissen Bergdoerfern in Andalusien nahmen. Wir flogen dann fuer 2 Tage nach Mallorca, wo wir im klaren Wasser in den wunderschoenen felsigen Buchten badeten, und dann ging's nach Barcelona. Dort war gerade das La Merce Fest im Gange, mit Feuerrennen, MenschenPyramiden, und Paraden mit den grossen Holzstatuen, unter anderem auch viele Konzerte und andere Ausstellungen. Nachdem wir nun ausgiebig Spanien kennengelernt hatten, flogen wir nach Deutschland, um meine naehere Familie zu besuchen.

When on vacation, a day is not complete for me if I haven't done at least one sketch. On some of the days I did up to four! I also met a lot of fellow sketchers and we compared and discussed our art.

Wenn wir reisen, ist ein Tag fuer mich nur komplett, wenn ich mindestens eine Zeichnung vollstaendigt habe. An manchen Tagen malte ich sogar viermal! Ich traf auch viele andere Zeichner, und wir zeigten einander unsere Kunstwerke.

MADRID

(Fun Fact: The palace has 1.5 million square feet of floor space and contains 3,418 rooms (!!!). Not sure how many bathrooms, probably none, as construction started in April 1735)

(Wusstet Ihr... dass der Palast 135.000 Quadratmeter umfasst, und 3.418 Raeume hat! Weiss nicht, wieviele Klo's, wahrscheinlich keine, denn die Erbauung fing April 1735 an)

(The guide discouraged us to take the steep footpath to the bottom as he didn't want anyone to be late to the bus. But that's the only view I really wanted to see and sketch! Not only did we end up staying with most of the tour, I also did the sketch from the top during the tour, then we broke off and walked to the bottom, where I made the other sketch. We even had time for ice cream and beer!)

(Der Reisefuehrer wollte nicht, dass der Bus auf Leute warten musste, deswegen sagte er, dass wir keine Zeit haetten, auf eigene Faust zum Fuss des Cliffs zu gehen, um die Bruecke von unten zu sehen. Doch dies war der einzige Blick, auf den ich sehnsuechtig gewartet hatte und den ich unbedingt zeichnen wollte! Wir blieben also eine halbe Stunde mit der Fuehrung, waehrenddessen ich die Bruecke von oben malte, dann verliessen wir die Gruppe halt doch, fanden den kleinen steilen Pfad und stiegen ihn hinunter, wo ich die Bruecke dann dort malte, und hatten sogar Zeit fuer Eis und Bier!)

I love going with my drawings over both pages when the sketchbook is open.

Madrid was my first sketch on this journey, and Sagrada Familia I did while waiting for our tour guide.

Manchmal finde ich eine Szene, wo ich ueber beide Seiten in meinem Zeichenbuch gehen muss. Die finde ich immer toll. Madrid war meine erste Zeichnung der Reise, und dann rechts ist die Sagrada Familia, als wir auf die Fuehrung warteten.
