14th Annual Wekiva Paintout

Wow, it's been almost 5 months since my last report!
Wow, es sind fast 5 Monate seit meinem letzten Report!

A new year has started, I am teaching 4 classes currently at the Artists Workshop in NSB, coordinate the life drawing sessions, went to NYC for a great business trip with Austin, and continue to develop my pen and ink drawing style. So much has happened, but I want to focus on the recent paintout. More of the other stuff in a later post...
Ein neues Jahr hat angefangen, ich unterrichte 4 verschiedene Faecher im Artists Workshop in NSB, coordiniere die Sessions mit Modell, ging auf einen tollen Business Trip nach New York City mit Austin, und entwickele meinen Tuschezeichnen-Stil weiter. So viel ist passiert, aber ich will hier nur ueber den Paintout berichten, mehr ueber alles andere in der nahen Zukunft...

25 artists gathered at the Wekiwa Springs State Park by Apopka last week to paint the varying scenes. The park has beautiful forests with dark slender pine trees growing between golden fields of long grasses, down the road the crystal-clear waters of the bubbling spring creates a wonderful swimming spot, and Wekiva Island, the bar and fun spot of the Weinaug's who coordinate and sponsor the event, has tall greenery framing the clear Wekiwa river full of turtles, gators, and various birds.
25 Kuenstler versammelten sich letzte Woche fuer 7 Tage im Wekiwa Springs State Park in Zentral-Florida, um die verschiedenen Szenen zu malen. Der Park hat einen tollen Wald mit schlanken, dunklen Tannen, die in Feldern von goldenen Graesern wachsen, ein paar Schritte entfernt sprudelt kristallklares Wasser des Wekiwas aus dem Boden, um einen tollen natuerlichen Swimmingpool zu bilden, und Wekiva Island, die Bar und Vergnuegungsplatz der Weinaug's, die den Paintout organisieren, hat gruene Baeume und Wasserrosen, die den klaren WekiwaFluss rahmen, wo Schildkroeten, Alligators and zahlreiche Voegel leben.

We painted day and night, had great food, lots of sales, and wonderful companionship with the artists who all bunked at the State Park. So much fun!
Wir malen Tag und Nacht, hatten tolles Essen, etliche Verkauefe, und grossartige Gesellschaft mit den Kuenstlern, die alle in den Huetten im State Park untergebracht waren. So viel Spass!

Several afternoons some of us got together and did portrait sessions, forming the "informal" Wekiva Portrait Society ;-)  All the "foreigners" of our artist group were painting portraits, our sitters were American. So we had China (Hai-Ou), Ukraine (Olena), Russia (Natalia), Israel (Orit), and Germany (me) at every sitting. It was great to see how everybody approached the portrait differently - I tried watercolors and it was very difficult but satisfying to work with.
Einige Nachmittage versammelten sich einige von uns, um Portraits zu malen. Wir gruendeten die informelle "Wekiva Portrait Gesellschaft". Alle Fremdgeborenen der Kuenstler malten Portraits, waehrend die Modelle Amerikaner waren. Wir hatten China (Hai-Ou), Ukraine (Olena), Russia (Natalia), Israel (Orit), and Germany (ich) in jeder Stunde. Es war echt interessant zu sehen, wie jeder ein Portrait anders anfing - ich versuchte einige in Aquarell, was sehr schwer ist, doch ich war ziemlich zufrieden mit meinen Gemaelden.

Here are my paintings of the week: I did some in oil (traditional brushes and thick impasto with palette knife), and then introduced my pen and ink with wash, which received great feedback.
Hier sind meine Gemaelde der Woche: Ich malte einige in Oel (traditionell mit Pinseln, und einige mit dickem Impasto mit dem Palettenmesser), und stellte dann auch meine Tuschezeichnungen mit Aquarell vor, was guten Feedback bekam.

Thursday/Donnerstag

Thursday morning I started this blog offline (but couldn't post it until now, as our cabin doesn't have wifi), and then went down to the Wekiva Island/Bar area. This whole week had been unusually cool, but dry and sunny with blue skies. Usually by now we have temps in the 60s/night and high 70s/day, but it's been 40s/night and high 60s/day. Some of the artists are from up north like Massachusetts and such, and they love it, but we Floridians are freezing!

Am Donnerstag morgen fing ich an, den Blog zu schreiben, konnte jedoch nichts postieren, da wir kein Wifi hatten, und ging dann wieder zu Wekiva Island. Die ganze Woche war gan kuehl, doch immer sonnig und trocken. Es war einfach wunderbares Wetter zum malen. Kuenstler von Nord-US wie Massachusetts und Michigan fanden es sehr warm, doch fuer uns Floridianer war es immer noch ziemlich kalt.

High live at Wekiva Island

I painted a corner of the bar area with the neat kinetic art installations that are placed there. The weather was great in the sun, but all the artists painting in the shade were still bundled up.

Ich malte eine Ecke der Bar mit den interessanten kinetischen Kunstwerken dort, finde es aber nicht gerade mein bestes ;-(

I had a great lunch from Gary's food truck there with two other artists, and then waited for Captain Tom to come back with his pantoon boat. At 2pm he finally arrived and was delighted that I was going down the river with him again. I told him I didn't want to paint the river again, but instead asked if he could pose for me to do his portrait. He was honored and delighted and totally surprised at the request.

Ich ass ein tolles Mittagessen mit 2 Kuenstlern und wartete dann auf Capt'n Tom mit seinem Pantoon Boot. Als er endlich gegen 14 Uhr ankam von seiner Morgentour, fragte ich ihn, ob ich wieder mitkommen koennte. Aber nicht, um den Fluss zu malen, sondern ob er fuer mich sitzen wuerde fuer ein Portrait. Er war total ueberrascht und konnte sich fast nicht kriegen, dass jemand ihn malen wollte (ich versichterte ihn, dass er seine Kleider anlassen konnte!).

We anchored on Shell Island, where three other artists had been painting since noon, and I started his portrait in paint. I did not have any charcoal or pencil, but the burnt umber that Elisabeth gave me worked great. This was my third portrait from a live model ever, and the first time in the outside air! 

Wir hielten bei der Muschelinsel an, wo 3 andere Kuenstler schon seit Mittag malten, und ich fing Tom's Portrait an. Ich hatte keine Zeichenkohle oder Bleistift, und musste mir ein bisschen Umber von Elisabeth holen, um dann gleich mit Farbe anfangen zu koennen. Dies war mein 3. Portrait vom Modell, und das erstemal draussen!

The sun was shining strong on his left side, and made a great pattern I could follow. We were chatting all the way through, until I got to his mouth. After a bit more than an hour I deemed it final and when I showed it to him, he was absolutely delighted and amazed how it came out. He is such a nice guy, so I asked him if he would accept it as a gift after the event was over, as I wanted to hang it. He was even more surprised and texted his wife right away. It was great to see his joy.

Die Sonne schien sehr stark auf seine linke Seite und ich konnte dem Schattenspiel gut folgen. Wir schwatzten die ganze Stunde ueber, die ich malte, bis ich dann zum Mund kam. Als ich das Bild zu ihm drehte, war er ganz ausser sich und fand es sehr gut gelungen. Da es fuer mich nur eine Uebung war, schenkte ich ihm das Bild, worueber er sich so freute, dass er gleich allen Freunden und Verwandten das Bild uebers Handy schickte. Er ist ein echt lieber Kerl und ich freute mich, ihm eine Freude zu machen.

In the evening I went for a Mexican dinner with Stephanie M and Susan C, and came back to the cabin to chat for a while. It was a nice and relaxing evening.

Am Abend ging ich mit meinen Schlafgenossen Stephanie und Susan in die Stadt zu einem mexikanischen Restaurant, wo wir danach in der Huette ein bisschen schwatzten. Es war ein sehr geruhsamer Abend.

Friday/Freitag

Friday morning we awoke to another chilly day, but this time the whole forest area was shrouded in a great thick fog. As the sun broke through at around 7:45, a couple of brave souls (crazy?) went out and painted the magnificent sunrays there. However it was still under 40 degrees, and I decided to paint later when it was getting much warmer. 

Am Freitag erwachten wir wieder zu einem kuehlen Morgen, doch diesesmal war der ganze Wald in einen tollen Nebel gehuellt. Als die Sonne gegen 7:45 durchbrach, fanden wir einige mutige Seelen (verrueckte?), die am Waldrand mit Handschuhen den Nebel malten. Es war immer noch unter 5 Grad, und ich wollte das nicht wagen...

I went to the bar area on Wekiva Island and started a huge canvas right by the bar. I decided to paint the beer taps, because they were in consistent light and very colorful and interesting. I started with purple, pink and blue acrylic colors and then outlined the taps in purple. Once that was dry I went in with my oils and punched up the colors. Between offers for beer and  free lunch I finished the painting by 2pm.  Altogether it took about 3 hours, which is quite a long time for me.

Ich ging zu Wekiva Island und fing ein riesiges Gemalde bei der Bar an. Die Bierhaehne sind so interessant und farbenfroh, und waren den ganzen Tag im Schatten. Ich find mit lila, rosa und blau an in Akrylik, und malte dann die Elemente in lila. Dann kamen die tollen Farben in Oel, und zwischen einem gratis Mittagessen und Angeboten fuer Bier gratis konnte ich es dann endlich gegen 14 Uhr rahmen.

After changing at the cabin, I got one of the free kayaks that are provided to the artists this week and paddled around the Wekiwa a bit. It was very relaxing and scenic. I enjoyed myself immensely and did a little sketch in my book.

Danach zog ich mich um, da es nun ziemlich warm wurde in der Sonne, und bekam ein Kayak zugestellt, wo ich dann den Wekiwa ein bisschen rauf und runter paddelte. Es war sehr geruhsam und malerisch. Ich zeichnete ein bisschen in meinem Sketchbook.

In the evening the bar and whole island filled up with people, as it was a Friday night. I chatted with some artists, partook in the great pasta bar, and then walked around while some of the artists did nocturne paintings. I did not feel like doing that, and went back to the cabin for a good nights rest by 9pm.

Am Abend fuellte sich die ganze Insel und Bar mit Leuten, und einige der Kuenstler malten ein Nachtgemaelde. Nach dem tollen Abendessen hatte ich jedoch keine grosse Lust dazu, und besuchte jeden bei seiner Staffelei, und ging dann gegen 21 Uhr ins Bett.

Saturday/Samstag

Saturday, last day! After a great breakfast I went to Wekiwa Island again, and got a parking spot. It was filling up fast, as the weather was getting a bit warmer (more to the normal 80s), and it was St. Patrick's Day. I walked around a bit, chatted with artists and visitors, and then visited with some of the participants for the Quick Draw. I also got one of the kayaks again and spotted 2 alligators along with a brood of 6 baby alligators (maybe 15" long, a couple of weeks old, but what do I know?) After that I drove to Winter Park 20 minutes away to stroll around the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, one of the best in this area.

Samstag, der letzte Tag! Nach dem Fruehstueck kamen wieder viele Besucher und Schwimmer zur Inssel, denn nun ging das Wetter endlich ins Normale ueber (fast 26 Grad), und es war St. Patrick's Tag. Ich wanderte ein bischen herum und sah einige Leute malen. Dann setzte ich mich wieder in eine Kayak und ging den Fluss in die andere Richtung rauf. Ich sah einige Alligatoren, und das allererste Mal 6 Babies (sie waren ca. 40cm lang, nur einige Wochen alt, nach meiner Schaetzung). Dann fuhr ich nach Winter Park, wo ein tolles Kunstfest in Gange war und ich mir nun endlich mal die Beine strecken konnte.

In the afternoon we all changed and freshened up for the gala on this last night, which was awesome. Great food (4 different stations of food: Caesar salad with awesome toppings, Irish bangers and mash, Asian noodles, and fruit-topped crepes). We visited with the VIPs and patrons, and some sales were made. My very first painting, Gold in the Forest, sold that night. We also danced to the live music (great moves by Peter Carolin, James Dickinson, Manon Sander and Pam Ayres!), played Rummy, and sang some songs to the guitar played by Priscilla Coote. The evening went fast and the weather was not as cold as the other nights. 

Am Nachmittag zogen wir uns alle die besten Sachen an, denn heute abend war die Gala. Tolles Essen, VIPs und Kunstliebhaber, die alle da waren und einige Gemaelde kauften. Einige von uns tanzten zur Live Musik (um aufzuwaermen!), spielten ein paar Runden Romme, und sangen zur Gitarre. Der Abend ging dann eigentlich ziemlich schnell und voller Gaudi rum.

Around midnight we went to bed at the cabins, and everybody packed up early Sunday morning and drove home. It was a great paintout with great friendships forged! I will remember everybody fondly and it was great to get to know the other artists so well.

Gegen Mitternacht waren wir dann im Bett, und packten am Morgen alles frueh ein. Ich kam vor Mittag daheim an, und hatte nun schoene Erinnerungen (und Austin ein tolles Bierhahn-Gemaelde). Dieser Paintout hatte viel Spass gemacht, da wir uns alle viel besser kennenlernen konnten. Kuenstler sind echt lieb UND voller Gaudi.

Portrait Painting Workshop

Hello all,
I hope everybody is having a great Christmas season.
Hallo, ich hoffe, ihr habt alle eine schoene Adventszeit!

I just participated in Deborah Elmquist's workshop at the Artists Workshop in New Smyrna Beach. Okay, it was NOT really a portrait painting workshop, but more to delve into the secrets of the Zorn palette, but of course as you will see, you can really only use it on portraits. This limited palette was used by Anders Zorn for some of his portraits, and even though they seem very colorful, it's based on the usage of only 3 colors (yellow ochre, cadmium red, blue-black) and white. So it's the 3 primaries (yellow, red and blue), and with those you can mix the most wonderful skin tones.
Ich bin gerade mit einem Workshop fertiggeworden, der von einer lokalen Kuenstlerin, Deborah Elmquist in New Smyrna Beach im Artists Workshop gehalten wurde. Okay, es war kein Portrait-Mal-Kurs im Sinne, sondern ein Kurs, um die einfache Palette (Farbenauswahl) von Anders Zorn kennenzulernen, die sich eigentlich nur fuer Portraits eignet. Er benutzte fuer einige seiner Portraits, die sehr farbenreich aussehen, nur die 3 Grundfarben Gelb, Rot und Blau, mit Weiss, und konnte damit tolle Fleischtoene erreichen. So benutzten wir also, wie er, nur Gelbocker, Cadmium Rot, und Blau-Schwarz, mit Titanium Weiss.

Deborah is a wonderful artist and a very good instructor, so all 12 participants had lots of fun and learned a lot. I finally learned about portrait painting, and most valuable of all, how to mix correct flesh tones and how to make them glow. All with 4 colors, how great is that! (Since I really hate mixing colors). It's very intuitive after a while, and very pleasurable.
Deborah ist eine sehr gute Kuenstlerin, und auch eine wunderbare Lehrerin, somit hatten alle 12 Schueler viel Spass und wir lernten auch viel! Ich persoenlich machte mich nun besser mit dem Portrait-Malen bekannt, und was noch wichtiger ist, wie man die richtigen Fleischtoene mischt, und sie fast zum Gluehen auf der Leinwand bringt, und vor allem mit nur 4 Farben! Denn ich mische eigentlich nicht sehr gerne Farben, aber dies machte sogar Spass!

The first day Deborah started her demo painting, explaining measuring and how to first learn the standard features, and then to pinpoint how your model deviates from that, which is what makes every face unique. After the initial sketch in charcoal (1), we started on flat shadows (2), mixing the mid tones for the areas in light (3-4), and then going from there, elaborating with different color temperatures on the rest of face (5-7), til it came together (8-9).

Am ersten Tag fing Deborah mit einer Demonstration an, wie man verschiedene Gesichtsteile misst, und was die Standard -asse sind, von dem dann das jeweilige Modell so abweicht, dass jedes Gesicht dann individuell aussieht. Nach der ersten Skizze in Kohle (1), malten wir die flachen Schattenregionen (2), dann mischten wir die Farben fuer die Mitteltoene der Regionen im Licht (3-4), und dann den Rest der Gesichtsfarben (5-7), bis man am Schluss die Details einarbeiten konnte (8-9), und es fast in einen Rahmen gehoerte!

These progress shots are my painting. So far I had only painted 2 models from life about 10 years ago, and also 3 portraits from photos about 13 years ago. So you can say this is my 6th portrait, and I really loved the process and what I learned.

Diese progressiven Bilder sind mein erstes Gemaelde. Bis heute hatte ich nur 2 Modelle live gemalt (vor ca. 10 Jahren), und 3 Portraits von Photos vor ca. 13 Jahren. Man kann also sagen, dies war mein 6. Portrait, und ich finde es ganz gut gelungen, und ich habe wirklich viel gelernt.

On the second day most of us still painted on this model, but I was already finished and I started a second version of the same photo. Below are the reference photo, and the first and second portrait of mine from it. I think I really learned quite a bit, which you can see in the second, better portrait.

Am 2. Tag malten die meisten noch an ihrem Portrait herum, aber da ich schon fertig war, fing ich eine 2. Version desselben Photos/Modells an. Unten sind das Referenzphoto, und das erste und zweite Portrait von mir davon. Man kann wirklich sehen, dass der Workshop echt gut war.

On the third day Deborah did more demos, and we all painted separate facial features from photos of different paintings. This really helped too, especially since they varied so much in their coloring (some more yellowish, some more violet), and we could really approximate all those hues with the 4 colors!

Am 3. Tag malte Deborah noch ein paar kleine Demos, und wir malten dann alle verschiedene Gesichtsteile von Photos von gemalten Portraits. Dies half auch, vor allem zeigte es, dass man wirklich viele verschiedenen Toene von den 4 Grundfarben mischen kann, denn einige Vorlaege gingen ins Orange hinein, waehrend andere mehr violett waren.

If you ever consider doing a workshop with Deborah, go for it! She's a great and patient instructor.

I already asked all my family members how long they might be able to sit still for me, but I guess I'll do more practice portraits from photos first! More to come!

Ein Workshop mit Deborah Elmquist ist's wirklich wert. Ich habe schon etliche Familienmitglieder gefragt, wie lange sie wohl fuer mich stillsizten koennten, aber ich glaube, ich werde ein paar Uebungsportraits von Photos erst malen. Bis spaeter dann!

Tea Party - Finished!!!!!!

Tada! Here it is! I finished skintones and faces last night and tonight. It was very hard to get the expressions, especially the boy. He is laughing real hard in the reference photo, but it was quite difficult to recreate. I settled on this, and after repainting the mouth about 4 times, I am quite pleased with it now and will leave it alone. The skin tones are great, especially on the girl's arms, they almost glow. Below some detail shots.

Jippie! Endlich bin ich fertig! Habe gestern und heute abend die Hauttoene fertiggemalt. Es war ziemlich schwer, die Gesichtsausdruecke hinzukriegen, vor allem am Jungen. Er lacht ziemlich gross im Photo, doch das war sehr schwer zu malen. Nachdem ich seinen Mund etwa 4x uebermalt hatte, bin ich nun damit zufrieden. Die Haut, vor allem die Arme des Maedchens, sind super, sie haben einen warmen Unterton, der fast glueht. Siehe unten ein paar Detail-Photos.

More Color!

Progress tonight. All elements are pretty much done, except the skin colors (faces and arms). Yeah! Now I can see the end result clearly in my mind, and it's looking pretty good. The tablecloth is especially nice, I think. The folds are made from different colors ranging from a pastel blue and green to mauve and purple, the highlights are white, offwhite, beige and nice yellow. The underpainting really helped and it's a pleasure to develop the colors on top of it.

Heute abend habe ich alle Farben fertiggemalt ausser den Hautflaechen. Nun kann ich endlich das vollendete Gemaelde klar vor mir sehen, da ich nun fast fertig bin, und bis jetzt bin ich sehr zufrieden. Das Tischtuch hat viele Pastelfarbtoene, sieht echt toll aus. Ich sehe, dass die Untermalung in schwarz und weiss wirklich viel hilft, es ist eine Freude, die Farben darueberzustreichen.

Color!

Hello again!

On top of the finished grisaille I rubbed some burnt sienna in oil paints yesterday to give it a more antique and warm look. Here you can see how I started this layer on the girl's face and the lamp. It clearly gives a warmer look than the stark black and white.

Gestern abend rieb ich Gebrannte Sienna Oelfarbe ueber die komplette Untermalung, um dem Bild einen waermeren Unterton zu geben. Man kann diese Schicht in der Lampe und dem Gesicht des Maedchens sehen.

Tonight I started glazing some colors on top. For this process you need mostly transparent paints so that the shadow and light parts of the grisaille will show through. For example, just by rubbing some thin red paint (Venetian red) over the girl's dress, you get the overall effect of light and dark with all the work done in the underpainting. For some of the highlights I added some more opaque white mixed with the local color. This process is very easy, since all the work has been done in black and white.

Heute fing ich an, Farben drueber zu glasieren oder einzureiben. Dafuer braucht man transparente Oelfarben, so dass die hellen und dunklen Toene der Untermalung durchscheinen. So hat man gleich Schatten und Licht, da alle "Arbeit" waehrend der Grisaille-Schicht in schwarz und weiss beendet wurde. Fuer Highlights male ich mit dickerer Farbe, die mit Weiss vermischt ist, drueber.
In this photo I am done in color with pretty much everything EXCEPT the boy's shirt, all skintones (faces and arms), the girl's hair, and the tablecloth. (Sorry for the glare on the dark background, it is hard to photograph dark oil colors.) The effect of the subtle glazing can be seen in the detail below.

Im obigen Photo kann man sehen, dass so ziemlich alles komplett in Farbe ist, AUSSER den Hauttoenen, den Haaren des Maedchens, dem Hemd des Jungen, und dem Tischtuch. (Leider ist der Hintergrund nicht gut zu erkennen, da es noch nass und so dunkel ist, was immer schwer ist, zu photographieren.) Im Detail unten koennt ihr den zarten Effekt der Glasur sehen.

Tea Party - progress

Last week I made some progress on the grisaille of the girl.

Letzte Woche malte ich das Maedchen fertig mit der Untermalung.

Tonight I finished the boy and some of the table. I am still debating if I should keep the glass in front of their hands, it is compositionally disturbing, and hey, I don't think kids are allowed to drink wine/champagne!

Heute abend kam der Junge und die Tischdecke dran. Ich ueberlege immer noch, ob das Glas vorne zu stoerend ist. Ich glaube, ich werde es auswischen.

The Artist and her Sister (Renoir copy)

This was my first painting done in oils. I painted this in 2002 to try out my old oil paints and to break away from the acrylics. Halfway through I decided to paint my own and my sister's portraits. Edith is at the piano, since she is very musical, while I am standing behind her. It was a great exercise, and the oil paints that my parents gave me to my 16th birthday were actually still good, after about 15 years!

Mein erstes Oelgemaelde, mit Oelfarben von meinen Eltern zu meinem 16. Geburtstag. Sie waren immer noch toll verwendbar. Ich wollte mit diesem Gemaelde von den Acryl-Farben losbrechen, und habe seither nur noch mit Oel gemalt. Halbwegs durch diese Renoir Studie entschied ich mich, Edith ans Klavier zu sitzen, waehrend ich hinter ihr stehe. Ich habe viel damit gelernt, und konnte meinen Eltern ein schoenes Weihnachtsgeschenk schicken.

Marco feeding Egon

This is my sister's son Marco feeding his stuffed pig Egon. I loved the backlit scene and believe I captured the light pretty well.. Gift to my sister Edith in Germany.

Marco fuettert sein Schweinchen Egon. Mir gefiel das Licht von hinten, und habe es gut eingefangen. Ein Geschenk fuer meine Schwester Edith, Marco's Mutter.

My son from a photo, at age 6. This was supposed to be just the underpainting, but I liked it just like that, so this is staying like this.

Mein Sohn, vom Photo abgemalt. Diese Untermalung bleibt "farbenlos", da ich das Gemaelde auch so mag. Er war ca. 6 Jahre alt.

Model at Workshop

After doing Peg's portrait at the workshop I did another view of her sitting on the model stand. Very loose strokes, done quickly in an afternoon. Wanted to capture the gesture rather than the portrait.

Unser Modell Peg auf ihrem Modellsitz im Workshop. Nachdem ich ihr Portrait fertighatte, malte ich sie schnell in einem Nachmittag, wie sie fuer uns Maler sass.

Portraits from life models

Jim and Peg, done at the Michael Siegel workshop. This was my first time doing portraits in oil, and from live models! It was quite an enjoyable experience to have someone sit for you. These were completed in about 1 afternoon. Nice exercise in fleshtones. 2006
