Copying the Masters Class

Hello again!
This winter/spring I have taught 3 classes at the Artists' Workshop in New Smyrna Beach.
I already posted when my first one, Pen and Ink with Colorful Washes, ended in February. A lot of my pen and ink students followed me to the next 6 weeks, where I am teaching Composition and Perspective. I will report on that soon, as it's almost finished.

Diesen Winter/Fruehling habe ich 3 verschiedene Klassen im Artists' Workshop in New Smyrna Beach unterrichtet. Ueber die erste (Pen and Ink) habe ich schon im Februar berichtet. Viele meiner Schueler von dieser Klasse haben sich fuer die naechsten 6 Wochen angemeldet,wo ich Komposition/Design und Perspektive unterrichte. Davon bald mehr, da die Klasse bald zu Ende ist.

2 weeks ago I finished my third class where we copied a famous painting, to learn about the history, color choices, brushwork, etc. I left it up to the students to vote for a painting and they selected this Monet:
Vor 3 Wochen ging mein Unterricht zu Ende, wo wir ein beruehmtes Gemaelde kopierten, um ueber die Geschichte, Farbauswahl, Pinselstriche etc zu lernen. Die angemeldeten Studenten konnten fuer ein Gemaelde waehlen, und dieser Monet gewann die Wahl.

I had 8 students, and here are some photos of the class. We all used the same canvas, 16"x20", which is a quarter of the original size!

Ich hatte 8 Studenten, und hier sind ein paar Studiophotos. Wir malten alle dieselbe Groesse, 50cm x 40cm, also genau ein Viertel der Originalgroesse!

We started with an underpainting in one color, most of us used a golden yellow, some more dark, and another used purple. The selection of the underpainting's color definitely influences the following color selections and impact.

Wir fingen mit einer Untergrundmalung mit einer Farbe an in Akryl, die meisten nahmen goldgelb oder ein helles Braun, eine nahm Lila. Die Farbauswahl hat einen Impakt auf die Farbwirkung der Farben, die drueber kommen.

First session we gridded the canvas and added the underpainting. Second session we added the sky. Here are some of our paintings after the second session.

Zuerst lernten wir, das Original auf die Leinwand zu zeichnen mit der Gittermethode. In der 2. Session malten wir dann den Himmel, um mit was einfachen anzufangen. Hier ein paar der Gemaelde in dem Zustand. 

We then worked on the grass, and in the 4th week we finished with the figures. Everybody had a different painting style, but they all looked really good at the end!
Dann malten wir das Gras, und in der 4. Woche endlich die Figuren. Jeder hatte eine andere Malweise, doch am Schluss sahen alle Gemaelde echt gut aus!

Here is a collage of the paintings. Some of the snowbirds in the group had to leave early and will finish their painting at home.

Hier eine Collage der fertigen Gemaelde. Einige der Schueler waren Snowbirds, die frueher unsere Klasse verlassen mussten.

In the last 2 weeks I decided to do some demos on how to apply what we learned to a different subject. Here are my very quick paintings, with a golden or red underpainting, and loose brushstrokes a la Monet/Impressionists applied.

Da wir frueher fertig waren als geplant, nutzte ich die letzten 2 Wochen, um ein paar Demos zu malen, wie man die Impressionistische Malweise mit gebrochenen Pinselstrichen und purer Farbe auf andere Gemaelde uebertragen kann. Hier ein paar kleine Gemaelde mit gelber oder roter Untermalung mit impressionistischen Pinselstrichen.

Klimt Painting

Finally another painting! This is a studio painting, quite large, that is hanging in our bedroom now. It's the top section of the famous painting by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt "The Kiss". In the picture below you can see the whole original, but I framed the section I reproduced.
Endlich wieder mal ein Gemaelde! Ein Studiogemaelde, das nun in unserem Schlafzimmer haengt. Es ist die obere Portion des weltberuehmten Gemaelde von dem oesterreichischen Kuenstler Gustav Klimt "Der Kuss". Unten zeige ich im originalen Gemaelde die Portion, die ich nachgemalt habe.

Below the panel in my studio, with everything almost finished that was done in oils. The rest (the clothes) was done in gold leaf.
Unten ist das Gemaelde in meinem Studio, mit allen Oel Teilen fertiggemalt. Der Rest (die Kleider) wurde in Goldblatt beendet. 

The gold leaf I had left over from some statue restoration job about 17 years ago. On the man's robe I used imitation gold, which is much brighter and glossier, and on the women's dress I used real 24kt. gold which is a little darker and duller. That way the 2 fabrics were distinguished from each other and contrasted in a very subtle way. After the gold leaf dried, I applied the decorative swirls directly onto it with rather dry oil paint. It looks different from every angle you look at it, and is a really spectacular effect when the light hits it.
Ich hatte einiges Goldblatt von etlichen Restaurationsprojekten von ueber 17 Jahren uebrig. Die Robe des Mannes belegte ich mit Imitation Gold, was heller und viel glaenzender ist, und fuer das Kleid der Frau nahm ich 24-karat Gold, was dunkler ist. Somit bekam ich guten Kontrast. Nachdem das Goldblatt trocken war, malte ich die dekorativen Wirbel und Kreise mit etwas trockener Oelfarbe.
Von jedem Blickwinkel sieht das Gemaelde anders aus, vor allem, wenn kuenstliches Licht im Raum ist - echt toll!

Here is a photo of me applying the gold leaf. Not professionally, I didn't have the correct brushes and leaf lifters, so I just tapped it on with my fingers. There was gold dust everywhere when I was finished!
Oben ein Photo von mir, wie ich das Goldblatt anlege, nicht gerade professionell, da ich meine speziellen Pinsel dafuer nicht mehr hatte. So nahm ich dann halt meine Finger. Als ich fertig war, war das ganze Studio voll mit kleinen Goldblaettchen und -restchen!

The Artist and her Sister (Renoir copy)

This was my first painting done in oils. I painted this in 2002 to try out my old oil paints and to break away from the acrylics. Halfway through I decided to paint my own and my sister's portraits. Edith is at the piano, since she is very musical, while I am standing behind her. It was a great exercise, and the oil paints that my parents gave me to my 16th birthday were actually still good, after about 15 years!

Mein erstes Oelgemaelde, mit Oelfarben von meinen Eltern zu meinem 16. Geburtstag. Sie waren immer noch toll verwendbar. Ich wollte mit diesem Gemaelde von den Acryl-Farben losbrechen, und habe seither nur noch mit Oel gemalt. Halbwegs durch diese Renoir Studie entschied ich mich, Edith ans Klavier zu sitzen, waehrend ich hinter ihr stehe. Ich habe viel damit gelernt, und konnte meinen Eltern ein schoenes Weihnachtsgeschenk schicken.

Copy of Caravaggio

Underpainting for a copy of a Caravaggio painting. Done about 5 years ago, to learn about the old masters' painting techniques. So far I haven't got the nerve up to top it with layers of color. Looks great in black and white, anyway.

Untermalung fuer eine Kopie nach Caravaggio. Vor ca. 5 Jahren angefangen, bin immer noch nicht bereit, mehr Farben draufzulegen. Sieht auch so gut aus, ja?
