Canaveral Paintout 2012 - Day 5 & 6

On the last day we all huddled on the porch of the Eldora House and watched Morgan Samuel Price do her demo. She is a wonderful artist and great teacher, it was awesome and very very interesting. I learned a lot and most of us were inspired to do a scene with lots of foliage.

It was still very windy and blustery, I had to go to work after the demo, but some of the artists still did more paintings. The venue for the gala on Saturday was changed and we all took our paintings down and had to reset them up again a mile up the road at the brandnew visitor's center. Below is my final wall.

The gala and final reception was last night, however only the official photographers were allowed to take pictures in the wet room. It was well visited and the new location proved to be very successful.

Please allow a couple of days and then go to this link to see the uploaded photos from the whole week.  http://www.friendsofcanaveral.com/2012po_pix/

It was great fun as usual, see you maybe next year!
RUTH

Canaveral Paintout 2012 - Day 4

The 4th day started out very windy. Hurricane Sandy was churning up the water and it was very windy. Linda Blondheim was scheduled to do a demo right at the beach under the new Flagler Pavilion, and she braved the wind and drizzle on her face and did a great and informative demo on painting and sculpting clouds with her paintbrush.

After lunch I was scheduled to give my demo at Island Collections on Flagler Ave. It is a very small but great shop full of wonderful furniture from all over the world. They have great vases, artifacts and historical items, it was great to discover this awesome little treasure. I set up under a structure from Bali in the small courtyard and painted the converted garage which houses even more items, with an umbrella in the sun and some foliage behind it.

This is my underpainting. It wasn't a scene I would have picked and so the final result wasn't really frameable, but I believe I got my points across. Several people came up to me later and told me how informative I made it and how well I presented the information and answered questions. I really like to teach!

About 20 minutes into the demo there was a sudden downpour and we all huddled under the covered porch. This changed my vantage point and I lost the sunlight. I relied on a picture I had taken earlier with my phone, and made up the highlights. Another excuse for not turning out a masterpiece ;-) But hey, now I can say I did a demonstration painting in a hurricane!

On Thursday evening we all met at JB's Fishcamp about 1 mile outside the park, and did a sunset painting. This year it was a bit different, as there were too many clouds to give us a colorful sunset. However, most of us did paint something there, and then at 7pm we had an auction for the public. Almost every artist contributed at least one painting, and most of them were auctioned off for the desired amounts. It was great fun.

This was my little sunset painting. Again, the photo is really blurry and bad.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout 2012 - Day 3

Wednesday and Thursday were our downtown days. I like those, as I still don't care too much about just greenery and marsh scenes. I was needed at my regular job in the morning, but after a shorts lunch meeting with some of the artists I set up by the clock tower on Canal. Last summer I painted the same scene, but from the other side, and it has been one of my favorite and most successful paintings. I painted looking east this time, where Trish Vevera had her own demo. Below is the scene and my resulting painting. I added a couple of people afterwards, but couldn't get a good shot.

While walking around I spotted Morgan Samuel Price, a very accomplished and famous artists whose book I just purchased several weeks ago. She did a fantastic painting on the sidewalk and I had a chance to chat with her for a while.

After dinner we had a reception at Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach with food and wine. Everybody had brought one painting to display. It was well visited and several paintings were sold again. Unfortunately I didn't remember to take any pictures.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout 2012 - Day 2

Palms at Leeper House, 14"x11", oil on masonite

Another successful day! In the morning I set up at Leeper House (a pathway next to Eldora House) where Elaine Hahn did a small demo. I went around the side and caught the porch in the morning sun, with the grounds and palms in great light, while she painted the front with many spectators. I went back and forth between my painting and her demo, which was very interesting.

Setup with underpainting, and finished painting.

After lunch I tried the beach which was very windy. However, I met Charles Dickinson and Elisabeth Ferber there and decided to sit in the sand and do a quick one.

Charles painting, and Elisabeth's setup on the right.

The waves were wild and the wind was blowing, but down on the ground it was acceptable. The roar of the ocean and the wind in my face was very distracting, so I hurried even more than usual. As I got up to step away and view the painting from a distance, a wind blew my whole setup in to the sand. I could, however, brush most of it off once I was home, and now the piece is a real plein air, with real New Smyrna Beach sand in it! - in the clouds nonetheless, LOL.

Wild Ocean, 10"x8", oil on panel

As soon as I was done with this second piece I decided to pack up for the day and clean my pochade box at home, frame the paintings and get a good start for tomorrow.

See you then! Ruth

Canaveral Seashore Paintout 2012 - Day 1

The Paintout has officially started! Yesterday was an informal meeting for all the artists to review the schedule, and today at 9am the Mayor of New Smyrna Beach officially started the 3rd annual paintout. The coordinators take great care of us with breakfast and coffee, and a great lunch with lots of veggies and light fare, along with water and soda. All we need to do is paint!

A lot of us stuck around the Eldora House, and I painted the back side from the dock, along with 3 others. It was a bit breezy but still quite hot. Below is the scene, my start with shadows and highlights on my usual toned panel, and the final painting.

Just as I was adding my signature my phone rang and I got notification that one of my paintings from last year's paintout sold! The buyer was still at the wet room/gallery space in the Eldora House, and I could meet her in person. Below is the happy artist and happy buyer next to the painting, Flagler Boardwalk, 14"x11", from last year.

After a great lunch chatting with my patron and the other artists I went around the corner and started a scene that I usually would not do. But I want to push myself and do more Florida-esque scenes, something typical and more generic, without having architecture that pinpoints a certain location.

I really liked how the shadows were laying across the sandy path, and tried my best to sort out all the foliage and greenery that always gives me so much trouble. I really like my result, unfortunately the photo of the painting is quite blurry, my apologies.

Ah, the end of a great first day. The 2 paintings on the left are from last year which we were allowed to hang to get a good start for the visitors, with the one having the red SOLD sign on it - yay! And the smaller ones on the right from today. I am very happy and ready for tomorrow's painting. Hope to see you there!

Attached is the schedule again, with my demo on Thursday afternoon in downtown NSB. Ruth

Workshop in New Smyrna Beach II

On the second day of the workshop we went to the dock that is off US1 between Port Orange and NSB. It was quite hot already, and we cramped under the small cover at the end, because the rest of the dock was taken up by a large boy scout group fishing and canoeing. But our presence injected a little of culture, so their leaders were fine with it ;-)

I tried to put my students under some time constraint, and by the time we were hungry for lunch, I told them to just finish their almost done paintings at home, because I wanted to do another quick demo and get them started on another one. The first drawing and how to select a scene in the first place are very crucial and set the tone for success or failure, and I wanted to make another point for my emphasis on values rather than detail and color.

I did not demo any painting at the dock, just took a couple of minutes to do a little one (see above). They were all surprised how hard it was to do a simple marsh scene that consists of simply water and some little grassy islands with a big sky, because this is the kind of scene that is very attractive to everybody and I believe every painter has attempted a similar scene sometime in their life.

After lunch we went to Sugar Mill Ruins in NSB, where the subject matter was more to my liking: architecture! We all settled on one viewpoint and I started a scene of the ruins with their arches, the big kettles and some palm trees. My painting below is just a start of the underpainting in 3 values and a touch of color to start. I again wanted to illustrate how getting the values correct is more important than color or details.
New Smyrna Beach, was mir natuerlich viel besser gefiel: Architektur!

Everybody was trying their hand at this scene, which again proved to be very difficult, especially since we had to move after about two hours because someone had a wedding there in the late afternoon. It had been a quite exhausting day anyway, and we had two good starts for the day, that everybody was eager to finish later at home.

I had a great experience with this first workshop and everybody said they liked my teaching and guidance. I am looking forward to maybe doing more of these.

Thanks for your interest and everybody's participation, it was great fun y'all!

Workshop in New Smyrna Beach

We just finished my first workshop yesterday and the day before. I believe it was very successful, all my students were very happy and seemed to have learned quite a bit. Some of them have never painted outside.

I started the first day with talking about plein air painting in general, and how important it is to develop a painting in the right way, not drawing each detail you see, but focusing on the major large shapes. Below is a small illustration of this principle. Which one has more impact at first glance? In addition, on which drawing do you see immediately what it portrays?

After that I took the students outside to the back patio of the Artists Workshop and did a demo of a small scene. It was looking across some broken pavement of an old parking lot, with two trees receiving some sunlight. It was very mundane and all of us thought it was quite uninteresting. However it proved to be very challenging. My demo took about 40 minutes and I tried to explain each brushstroke and why I decided to lay it here or there.

My demo painting, 8"x8"

After a quick lunch inside the students set up their own easels and with my guidance produced these paintings below of the same scene. It took quite a while, but we all developed the trees as rounded forms, trying to enhance the values rather than any leaf detail. Everybody was quite pleased with their finished results. The funny thing was that they all had a rather easy time converting the boring pavement into a water/marsh feature. They learned to paint with about 4-5 colors and without any tube greens, using new canvas/masonite panels, using a painting knife for highligting, and just the enjoy the pleasure of painting outside.

I will continue with the second day in the next post.

Demo at The Artists Workshop last week

Sorry it's a bit late, but I want to report about my demo painting at the Artists Workshop in New Smyrna Beach last Wednesday. The monthly meeting was well visited, but I had to compete with the first presidential debate this evening, so quite a few people left before I could get started. But the remaining members seemed to enjoy my painting.

I taped a photo to the wall that I had taken about 7 years ago in St. Augustine. I had painted that scene back then as a large 18x24 studio painting, see below scene and studio painting, and I had always liked the composition.

So on Wednesday I painted it again, this time smaller and much faster. While painting I talked a bit about easel selecetion, colors, scene selection, editing, brushes etc. The painting below is what I got after 40 minutes. Not finished but my main points have been illustrated successfully...

St. Augustine, 8"x10", oil on masonite

The audience seemed captivated and asked quite a few questions. I hope it got everybody interested in the workshop I am scheduled to teach this Friday and Saturday in NSB. Please, if you are still pondering, call me or send me an email!
Also, bis bald...

See you then,
Ruth
