New plein air setup

Hallo Ihr alle! Ich hoffe, Euer Sommer ist ganz toll!

I was teaching 3x during summercamp at the Artists Workshop studios. It was fun, I taught elementary school on 2 separate days, and then one day for the teens. The little kids got introduced to agamographs (too complicated to explain) and Picasso, and the teens did a self-portrait in Andy Warhol/pop style.
Ich half beim Summercamp bei uns in den Studios im Kunstclub in New Smyrna Beach, 2 Tage lang die Grundschueler, und einen Tag die Teenagers. Mit den Kleinen waren wir kreativ mit Amagographs (zu lang zu erklaeren!) und Picasso, und mit den Teens malten wir ein Selfportrait in Andy Warhol Stil.

At the end of the 4 weeks (2 weeks for children, 2 weeks for teens) I helped with cleanup and hang the resulting artworks for a show. Everybody was pleased and the parents were excited to view the various pieces of art.

Am Ende der 4 Wochen (2 Wochen Kinder, 2 Wochen Teens) half ich mit dem Aufraeumen und die Show zu haengen. Alle Eltern und Freiwilligen waren eingeladen, die vielen Kunstwerke zu bewundern.

During the summer I made a new setup for plein air painting for myself. I have used a pochade box for years now (almost 10) that I have also made for about 20 other artists who liked it. I initially had found the instructions on the internet. However, after spending some time with all the other professional artists at Forgotten Coast and comparing their various setups, I figured it was time for an upgrade. I ended up copying a setup that the artist James Coulter developed and sells. Being crafty, I figured it out and made my own for a fraction of the cost online. And it works well, too!
In den letzten paar Wochen habe ich mir einen neuen Setup fuer Plein Air Malen gezimmert. Ich habe meinen alten Pochade-Kasten nun fast 10 Jahre benutzt, und auch fuer ca. 20 Kuenstler gezimmert, denen er gefallen hatte. Ich hatte die Instruktionen auf dem Internet gefunden. Da ich nun so viele professionelle Kuenstler und deren verschiedene Setups waehren Forgotten Coast im Mai kennenlernte, dachte ich, es waere Zeit, meine Staffelei auf eine hoehere Stufe zu bringen. Ich kopierte den Setup des Kuenstlers James Coulter, der dies auf seiner Website verkauft. Da ich ja gut mit Werkzeugen bin, konnte ich mein eigenes mit ein bisschen Tueftelei fuer eine Fraktion des Preises selberzusammenzimmern. Es funktioniert echt gut!

I was very pleased with it as I took it out for a real painting session this week. We were at the Jetty Park in Ponce Inlet, FL (north of New Smyrna Beach) with family, and I snuck away for an hour to paint. Unfortunately I forgot my turpentine and paper towels, so I painted most of it with palette knife, which captured the breeze and liveliness of the scene.
Diese Woche konnte ich es nun endlich richtig ausprobieren. Wir waren mit Austin's Verwandten am Strand in Ponce Inlet, und ich konnte eine gute Stunde malen auf meiner neuen Staffelei. Leider vergass ich mein Turpentin und Papiertuecher, so dass ich fast das ganze Bild mit der Spachtel malte, was eigentlich die Briese und die Energie der Szene gut einfing.

Summer camp and some random sketches

Hello everybody!
Lots of things happened in the past month. I was busy teaching 2 days of summer camp for Art Is Creation... under the direction of Regina Wise. I taught a 4-hour class to the elementary kids in early June, creating a torn and glued tissue paper piece reminiscent of stained glass, and then a day of Plein Air painting in the studio backyard with acrylics. For that day we had a miniature horse posing for us, which was really cool.

Viele Ereignisse im letzten Monat. Ich habe 2 Tage Summercamp fuer Art Is Creation... unter der Direktion von Regina Wise unterrichtet. Fuer die Grundschueler machten wir eine Collage aus verschieden-farbigen Papieren, die dann wie Glasfenster aussahen. Fuer die Teens zeigte ich wieder, wie ein Bild draussen plein air gemalt wird. Wir malten in Acrylics, und hatten sogar ein  Minipferd, das fuer uns modellierte!

Below is our model, Peanut the miniature horse, with his owner Shelley. I gave her my demonstration painting. Peanut held quite still for me explaining the landscape and putting in a live animal, but was getting impatient by the time the teens were ready for their turn. But he was really cute!
Unten unser Modell Peanut, das Minipferd, mit Besitzer Shelley. Ich gab ihr mein Demonstrationsgemaelde. Peanut hielt ziemlich still fuer mich, als ich meine Erklaerungen abgab, doch war dann im Laufe des Tages viel zu unruhig, so dass er in einigen der Teen's Gemaelde mehr wie ein Maerchentier aussah. Aber er war ein wirklich liebes Pferd!

Last week I joined the Plein Air Tuesday group in the morning under the Dunlawton Bridge, and I painted the view to the north across the Halifax River.

Letzte Woche traf ich mich mit der Dienstagsgruppe unter der Dunlawton Bridge in Port Orange, und ich malte den Blick in den Norden, ueber den Halifax Fluss weg.

Ich weiss nicht, ob ich vielleicht nicht lieber nach dem 2. Schritt aufgehoert haben sollte (wow, ist das richtiges Deutsch?)

Summercamp Art Is...Creation

Art Is... Creation and its founder/organizer Regina Wise finished out their 4-week summer camp program this week. They invite local artists to teach for their 2-week artist camp for elementary kids, and 2-week teen camp. For the first time, I volunteered my time and talent and taught one day for each age group. It was a lot of fun. The summer camp is held at the studios of the Artist Workshop in New Smyrna Beach.
Diese Woche wurde das 4-woechige Summercamp der lokalen Organisation Art Is... Creation beendet, das in New Smyrna Beach in den Studios des Artist Workshop gehalten wurde. Die Gruenderin Regina Wise laedt lokale Kuenstler ein, die dann ein paar Tage dort lehren. Dieses Jahr habe ich das erstemal mitgemacht und einen Tag die Kleinen gelehrt, und einen Tag die Teens. Es machte viel Spass.

For the elementary kids (age 5-10) I taught about pointillism. For weeks before I had gone to home improvement stores to pick up the paint swatches and cut them into small squares. I then showed the kids some samples of Seurat and some impressionists, and then we got into gluing the different colors onto paper. We kept the highlights, midtones and shadow tones separately, and even though it became a bit tedious at the end, once we had all the artwork lined up, the kids were excited how great and "3-D" they all looked. It made a big impact.

Fuer die Grundschueler (5-10 Jahre) lehrte ich Pointillism. Jeden Tag ging ich in einen Heimwerkermarkt, wo ich die Farbkaertchen holte, um sie dann daheim in kleine Vierecke zu schneiden. Ich zeigte den Kindern ein paar Kunstwerke von Seurat und anderen Impressionisten, und dann fingen wir an, die verschiedenen Farbstueckchen auf Papier zu kleben. Wir hielten die verschieden Toene (Schatten, Mittelton, Highlight) auseinander, so dass wir am Schluss dann einen schoen modellierten Apfel hatten. Es war ein bisschen langwierig am Ende, doch die Kinder waren echt stolz auf ihre Kunstwerke, die dann vor allem in Masse und von der Ferne sehr gut ausssahen.

For the teen camp, I taught how to structure your doodling to make it a piece of art. Everybody doodles, especially in school, in the corner of a notebook, or when bored, so based on the fantastic patterns of the new craze of the Adult Coloring Books, I showed them how to break down an idea (an animal, a landscape, a word, etc) into big shapes and then to fill those shapes with easy repeating patterns to make a great impact and unique piece of art.
Fuer das Teen-camp zeigte ich den Teenagers (11-15 Jahre), wie man mit disziplinter Struktur einache Gekritzel in ein Kunstwerk fertigen kann. Wir fingen mit einfachen Ideen an (ein Tier, eine Landschaft, ein Wort, etc), und fuellten die verschiedenen grossen Farbfelder mit einfachen Mustern, die die meisten dann auch mit Wasserfarbe einmalten, um ein tolles Kunstwerk zu machen.

 

 

All the kids worked intensively on their art, and the volunteers and adults remarked how quiet the room got. Every teen came up with a totally unique idea and how to fill it, there were some great pieces. We reviewed them at the end, and discussed how different and cool each one looked.
Alle Kinder arbeiteten sehr intensiv und fuer einige Zeit war das Studio mucksmaeuschenstill. Jeder Kuenstler hatte total verschiedene Ideen und jedes Kunstwerk war wirklich einzigartig. Am Ende schauten wir alle zusammen an, und verglichen die verschiedenen Ideen und Ausfuehrungen.

It was great fun, and I will be volunteering and teaching again next year. Now I'm preparing to teach my composition and perspective class to adult artists at the Artist Workshop in August.
Es machte mir viel Spass, und ich nehme mir vor, naechsten Sommer wieder mitzumachen. Nun bereite ich mich auf meinen 4-woechigen Kurs im August vor, der fuer erwachsene Kuenstler ist.
