Me again! Ich schon wieder!
The 9th Annual NSB Plein Air Paintout commenced in late October, and I finally have time to write about it! It was very successful for everybody.
I was the cover artist, so the painting from last year that was picked for the cover was displayed everywhere... on brochures, schedules, posters, and those gigantic banners throughout town! How cool....
Der 9. Jaehrliche New Smyrna Beach Plein Air Paintout war im Oktober, und nun habe ich endlich Zeit, darueber zu schreiben. Es war ein erfolgreicher Event.
Ich war die Hauptkuenstlerin/Cover Artist, und deswegen war mein Gemaelde, das letztes Jahr fuer das Hauptbild gewaehlt wurde, ueberall zu sehen.... auf Broschueren, Posters, und diese riesigen Flaggen, die an etlichen Stellen in der Stadt aufgestellt waren. So toll!

We had 23 artists participating, most from Florida, but also out of state. We all know each other and it's great to get together for such a wonderful event and see old friends to paint with. I discovered that I have participated every year since the first event in 2011!

Wir hatten 23 Kuenstler, die meisten von Florida, die an dem Event teilnahmen. Da es schon das 9. Jahr ist, kennen sich die meisten, und fanden es supertoll, mit alten Freunden wieder zu malen. Ich fand heraus, dass ich seit dem ersten Event in 2011 jedes Jahr wieder eingeladen wurde und mitgemacht habe!

We had pretty good weather, but it was very humid on most mornings. The wet room/gallery was at our Artists Workshop where I teach and volunteer, right behind Marine Discovery Center. Both groups organized the event and benefitted from the proceeds for their various fundraising and community events - a great cause.

Wir hatten ziemlich gutes Wetter, jedoch war es am Morgen immer sehr sehr schwuel. Die Gallerie, wo die (noch nassen) Gemaelde aufgehaengt wurden, war im Artists Workshop, wo ich viel Freiwilligenarbeit mache und auch unterrichte, gleich hinter dem Marine Discovery Center. Beide Gruppen organisierten den Event und bekamen dann den Profit zu fuer ihre eigenen Events in der Gemeinde - immer eine gute Sache. Die Kuenstler bekommen, wie immer, 50% der Verkaeufe. Im Durchschnitt werden Bilder so zw. $300 und $1000 verkauft.

Since I was the cover artist, I was interviewed by the local newspaper and you can click here to see part of this interview on youtube. In addition I was included in 2 newspapers in their printed articles!

Da ich das Covergirl war, wurde ich von einer der lokalen Zeitungen interviewt, und hier koennt ihr klicken, um ein Teil meines Interviews als Video zu sehen. Ausserdem waren dann zwei Photos und ein grosser Artikel von mir in 2 Zeitungen!

Painting was fun, and I did a couple of switches to Pen and Ink artwork which was very well received by my fellow artists and the public. I sold almost all the paintings on my wall!

Das taegliche Malen machte Spass, und ich malte dieses Mal nicht nur in Oel, sondern ein paar mit der Tuschezeichnung und Aquarellwasch drueber, was sehr gut angekommen ist. Fast alle meine Gemaelde auf meiner Wand fanden einen Kaeufer!

We had evening paintouts, a sunset gathering where the public could see us all in action at JB's Fishcamp, and several other new events. For the sponsors and patrons we had a private event where 5 selected artists did a progressive painting in a little over 1 hour, that was then auctioned off by the very talented Emcee (and fellow artist) Michelle Held. Natalia Andreeva started the underpainting, then Joe Palmerio took over on the sky, I did a bit of the boardwalk and railings, then Charles Dickinson on the greenery, and Manon Sander finished it off! The reference photo was graciously supplied by a local photographer who was honored to see it painted live! The resulting 22"x28" oil painting fetched $1000 in a raucous auction before it was even finished!

Wir hatten ein paar tolle Festivitaeten, wo das Publikum zuschauen konnte. Ein paar Maltreffen am Abend, und eines an einem Restaurant am Fluss, wo wir dann den Sonnenuntergang malten. Fuer die Sponsoren hatten wir einen privaten Abend, wo unter anderem 5 ausgewaehlte Kuenstler ein progressives Gemaelde in einer knappen Stunde malten. Natalia fing an (malte es eigentlich fast fertig haha), dann malte Joe hauptsaechlich den Himmel, ich malte den Boardwalk und die architukturalen Dinge, dann Charles die Planzen und Baeume, und Manon trug dann die letzten tollen Tuepfelchen auf! Michelle unterhielt das Publikum mit Witzen und Tatsachen, und half, das fertige Gemaelde fuer $1000 in der Auktion unter den Mann zu bringen.

My turn to paint and entertain.

The event also hosted one or two demos each day, where the public was invited to sit and watch, learn and ask questions. Michelle Held started off the week with her demo on painting a live owl that was sitting very patiently for her. I was in the audience and did a quick pen and ink sketch of the scene.

Waehrend der Woche hatten wir auch ein paar Demonstrationen, wo das Publikum eingeladen war, mitzusitzen und Fragen zu stellen. Michelle Held fing mit einer tollen Demo an, wo sie eine lebendinge Eule in Oel malte. Ich war auch im Publikum und zeichnete die Szene, die dann gleich am naechsten Tag einen Kaeufer fand.

My demo on how to do a value study and what and how to edit an overwhelming scene on location was well received, I had over 30 people in the audience! I love doing demos and got great feedback on my teaching. There was also a photo of me in the newspaper.

Ich durfte auch eine Demo machen, ich erklaerte und zeigte, wie man eine Studie zeichnet, wenn man draussen vor einer Szene steht, die viel zu viel beinhaltet. Ich hatte ueber 30 Leute im Publikum! Ich demonstriere und erklaere gerne, und ich bekam viel positiven Feedback danach. Austin filmte mich, und ein Bild von mir in action kam dann auch in die Zeitung.

On the last Saturday we held a community quickdraw, where amateur artists could try their hand on a timed event (2 hours only) and enter the resulting painting in a competition for prizes. I was one of the judges and there was some really great artwork! Event the ones who didn't win had fun and I think everybody found respect for the plein air artists, who really have only 2-3 hours to do a painting (as the sun moves drastically in that time frame and changes the whole scene).

Am letzten Tag (Samstag) fand der Gemeinde-Quickdraw statt, wo sich lokale Hobbymaler daran machen konnten, in genau 2 Stunden eine Szene in einem Park zu malen. Wir hatten 4 Juroren, wo ich auch eine war, und es waren einige ausgezeichnete Gemaelde darunter. Selbst die Maler, die nichts gewannen, hatten Spass und konnten sehen, wie schwer es eigentlich ist, draussen in einem knappen Zeitraum was schoenes zu produzieren. So wie wir 23 Kuenstler es die ganze Woche machten, denn die Sonne steht ja in 2 Stunden total woanders, und das aendert die Szene dann sehr.

The grand finale was on Saturday evening at our studios that looked simply awesome, transformed into a high-caliber gallery! There was a great buffet, wine and drinks, live music, and lots of sales! My painting that was bought last year by MDC and was the cover art was auctioned off and fetched a great price for the event!
Das grosse Finale war dann am Samstag Abend in unseren Studios/Galerie, die echt toll aussah mit all den schoenen Bildern und  begeisterten Leuten und Kuenstlern. Es gab ein tolles Buffet, Wein und Live Musik, und ein Haufen Kaeufe! Mein Gemaelde, das ueberall zu sehen war und letztes Jahr von MDC gekauft wurde, wurde nochmal versteigert und brachte wieder viel Geld ein!

New Smyrna Beach Paintout 2018

Hello everybody! Hallo Ihr alle!
The New Smryna Beach Plein Air PaintOut just finished this weekend and here is my recap.
Letzte Woche war der New Smyrna Beach Plein Air Paintout, und hier sind meine Erlebnisse davon.

30 artists converged onto our lovely beachside community and were excited to capture the boats, beaches and beach cottages and downtown streets onto their canvases. There were many old friends and some new faces. It was fun, as usual, to paint with them and then have some wine during the evening events. MarySue and Bill Weinaug, owners of Outriggers Bar and Grille, were the main organizers of the event, with the proceeds from art sales being shared by the artists and Marine Discovery Center. We at the Artists Workshop also helped out and organized the demos and the QuickDraw.
30 Kuenstler trafen sich in unserem huebschen Ort am Strand, und waren alle begeistert, die Boote, den Strand und die suessen Strandhaueschen und kleinen Straesschen im Dorf auf die Leinwand zu bannen. Ich traf viele alte Freunde, und einige neue Gesichter. Es machte so viel Spass, wie immer, mit ihnen zu malen und am Abend Wein zu trinken. MarySue und BIll Weinaug, die Besitzer der Outriggers Bar and Grille waren die Hauptorganisatoren des Events, und der Profit der Kunstverkaeufe waren unter den Kuenstlern und dem Marine Discovery Center geteilt. Wir im  Artists Workshop halfen auch aus und organisierten die Kunstdemos und den QuickDraw.

Here are the paintings I did this last week, in no particular order. The weather was okay the first 2 days (some heavy rain), but spectacular for the rest of the week: cool mornings in the 50s, and during the day in the high 60s with clear sky and great sun. I did a few in a more colorful style and expressive brushstrokes, which was well received by my fellow artists.
Hier meine Gemaelde, die ich letzte Woche angefertigt habe. Das Wetter war nur okay an den ersten 2 Tagen (viel Regen), doch dann wirklich spektakulaer den Rest der Woche: kuehle Morgen um die 10 Grad (brrrrr), und dann ca 15-17 Grad am Tag mit klarem Himmel und fahlem Sonnenschein. Ich malte einige der Bilder in meinem neuen, viel mehr farbigen Stil und expressiven Pinselstrichen, was unter meinen Malkollegen gut ankam.

Viel Spass beim Anschauen meines Malprozesses!

Thursday I went to the marina and did this little one of 2 boats in the distance.
Am Donnerstag malte ich am Hafen, diese 2 Boote, die eigentlich sehr weit weg geparkt waren.

Some of my students came and watched me paint, so I turned it into a semi-formal demo. I fixed it up a little when I got home, and hung it on the last day.

Einge meiner Schueler kamen und ich machte eine halb-formelle Demonstration fuer sie. Ich korrigierte einige Stellen daheim und hing es am letzten Tag dann auf.

During the week the artists were fed by sponsors every day and evening, and housed at the brandnew Springhill Suites by the beach (thanks, Randy and Sheri!). Since I live only 15 minutes away, I stayed at home, and my lovely husband made dinner one evening for some of the artists who had a great time! Thanks for coming over, PC, Susie, Olena and Natalia!
Unter der Woche waren wir gut verspeist von verschiedenen Restaurants, gutes Mittag und Abendessen, und die meisten Kuenstler hatten tolle Hotelzimmer im nagelneuen Springhill Suites am Strand. Da ich ja nur 15 Minuten weit weg wohne, blieb ich daheim, und an einem freien Abend machte mein lieber Ehemann ein tolles Abendessen fuer einige der Kuenstler. Es war ein unterhaltsamer Abend in unserem Haus mit (von links) PC, Susie, Olena und Natalia!

Talkin' about kayaking and taking classes!

Hi everybody

Austin and I took our kayaks out yesterday and paddled around beautiful New Smyrna Beach. It was relaxing and nice, and I could even do a little sketch during lunch on a sandbar in the middle of the inlet (see red star).

gestern gingen Austin und ich mit unseren Kayaks paddeln in New Smyrna Beach. Sehr entspannend und schoen, und ich malte sogar eine kleine Skizze zum Mittagessen, das wir auf einer Sandbank in der Mitte des Inlets hielten (siehe roter Stern).

Summer is over, and classes are starting very soon!

A scene x3!

Hello everybody
My freelance graphic design has been pretty busy, in addition to being a volunteer publicist and webmaster at the Artists Workshop, so I haven't had too much time to actually paint. But I wanted to show you some paintings I did in the last couple of years that are interesting to compare.

Mein Graphic Design Business hat mich letzthin ziemlich beschaeftigt, und dann habe ich auch viel Zeit damit verbracht, die Website unseres Kunstclubs auf den letzten Stand zu bringen. Ich hatte nicht viel Zeit zum Malen. Aber ich wollte einige Gemaelde zeigen, die ich in den letzten Jahren malte, denn es ist interessant, sie zu vergleichen.

I really don't ever repaint a painting, or go back to the same scene. But this street view in St. Augustine (USA's oldest city) is just too cute to pass up, and so I've painted it three times in the last decade.
Ich male eigentlich nie dieselbe Szene zweimal oder oefters, doch diese Strassenszene in St. Augustine (aelteste Stadt in den USA) ist einfach zu suess, um daran vorbeizugehen. So habe ich diesen Blick dreimal im letzten Jahrzehnt gemalt.

Die 3 Photos sind die Gemaelde.

The first painting is 24x18 and in oils. It's based on a photo of the street scene, as you can see, it was taken by standing in the middle of the street. It was one of my first oil paintings (up to this point I had mainly painted in watercolors and acrylics). It has been my favorite for a long time. Probably because it's so graphic and "in your face", due to the stark shadows. Now that I know more about painting and composition and such, I realize that the shadows, nice as they are, are not correct: They are all blue/purple. Shadows have to be a darker version of the object that they fall on, and should be a bit more varied.

Das erste Gemaelde ist 61cm x 46cm. Ich malte es vor 12 Jahren von einem Photo, das ich schoss, als ich in der Mitte der Strasse stand. Es war eines meiner ersten Oelgemaelde, denn bis dahin hatte ich meistens Aquarelle oder in Akryl gemalt. Das Bild war ewig mein Lieblingsgemaelde. Wahrscheinlich weil es so grafisch ist wegen den starken Schatten. Nun, da ich viel mehr ueber Kunst und Malen weiss, erkenne ich, dass die Schatten nicht ganz realistisch sind, obwohl sehr effektiv. Sie sind alle gleich blau und violett. Schatten sind eine dunklere Version des Objektes, auf das sie fallen, und muessen deswegen viel verschiedener sein.

The second painting is a small 8x10 that I did as a demonstration for my first plein air workshop. I did it in front of an audience in about an hour, while explaining my process. I started with a warm Burnt Sienna underpainting, which gives it that warmer overall hue. The shadows are still quite purple, but way too warm. 

Das zweite Gemaelde is 20cm x 26cm. Ich malte es als eine Demonstration fuer meinen ersten Workshop vor einem Publikum in einer Stunde, waehrenddessen ich meinen Prozess erklaerte. Ich fing mit meiner damals gewohnten Untermalung in Gebranntem Sienna an, weswegen es viel waermer erscheint. Die Schatten sind immer noch ziemlich violett, aber viel zu warm.

The third painting (16x20) is done on location earlier this year during the St. Augustine Plein Air Paintout. That's why the perspective is shifted to the right, as I had to stand in the grass, not in the middle of the street. The shadows are still in the purple family, but way more subtle. Overall, the color harmony is much better than in the earlier versions, and my brushwork is more interesting.

Das dritte Gemaelde (41cm x 51cm) malte ich waehrend des St. Augustine Plein Air Paintout im April dieses Jahres an Ort und Stelle. Deswegen ist die Perspektive anders, denn ich konnte ja nicht 3 Stunden in der Strasse stehen. Die Schatten sind immer noch sehr violett, aber viel ruhiger und subtil. Im grossen und ganzen ist die Farbhamonie viel besser und anspruchsvoller als in den vorigen Versions, und mein Pinselwerk ist auch viel interessanter.

Above are my steps in how I developed my paintings over 10 years ago. Pretty straight forward, with the initial drawing in burnt sienna on white canvas, then I did all the shadows, before filling in the mid tones and highlights.

Oben sind die Schritte, wie ich meine Gemaelde vor 10 Jahren angefangen habe. Ziemlich normal, mit der ersten Zeichnung in Gebranntem Sienna auf weisser Leinwand, dann habe ich alle Schatten gemalt, bevor ich dann die Mitteltoene und Highlights aufgesetzt habe.

The sequence above shows the steps I now take in developing a painting: I do a colorful wash in acrylics, then do my drawing in purple. Usually I work in oils on the painting overall, however in this case I finished the row of houses on the far side first, before developing the house on the right and its yard.

Und hier sind die Schritte, die ich nun nehme, um ein Gemaelde zu gestalten: Erst eine farbige Untermalung in Akryl, dann die Zeichnung in Violett (meistens). Dann fange ich mit den Oelfarben an, meist ueber die ganze Leinwand, doch in diesem Gemaelde habe ich erst die Haueserreihe links fertiggemalt, bevor ich das Haus und den Rasen vorne rechts angefangen habe.

I am sure there are different opinions about which painting is more successful. But the point is, that even if it's the same artist, a scene can interpreted in so many different ways and styles and colors, and still retain the same essence. It's interesting to do the same scene several times, especially years apart.

Ich bin sicher, dass es viel verschiedene Meinungen darueber gibt, welches Gemaelde besser ist. Aber ich finde, dass es interessant ist, wenn derselbe Kuenstler dieselbe Szene malt. Mit verschiedenen Farben und Stilen kann man total verschiedene Gemaelde bekommen, und doch ist es immer in der Essenz genau dasselbe. Als Kuenstler ist es belehrend, dieselbe Szene oefters zu malen, vor allem mit vielen Jahren dazwischen.
