Beautiful, but a bit chilly Sunday afternoon at the Dunlawton Bridge on the Halifax River, where these two boats caught my eye. Met some nice and interested people, quite a successful painting, fresh air, gulls squaking - all in all - a beautiful day! 4 colors plus white. 8x10, oil on masonite.

Which colors?
Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, a dab of Cad Yellow Light and some Cad Red plus White. Those are my trusty base colors and it's amazing how much you can achieve with just those 4 colors.

Next time draw your first sketch with Ultramarine blue, ... and see what happens ;-)
Wow, you're good! I usually do my block-in with burnt sienna, was actually pondering starting with ultra, but then forgot about it. How could you tell? You are amazing, I guess it's too red?
Anyway, what difference do you think I would see with the blue sketch? thanks!
I mend only the initial sketch, not the complete block inn. Blocking it inn completely will give a nice uniformity as you have here, but it could run out of control and getting to strong on one color. An other idea is to pre-color your board/canvas with a pinkish orange wash.
