Painters' Corner in Marktbreit, Germany - Malerwinkel in Marktbreit

Hello everybody,
I haven't posted in a while, I am sorry. I am preparing for the classes I want to offer in the fall at the Artists Workshop. I will continue my class on Composition and Perspective, and then start a new class on Calligraphy and Goldleafing. More about all these in a separate post later this month...

Hallihallo an euch alle!

I am excited about a new technique that I have tried now for the last couple of months. It's in acrylics, and very colorful. I think it's a step above the literal depiction of my subject and makes it more impressionistic, painterly and artistic.

Painters Corner, Marktbreit  16"x20"  acrylics on masonite panel

When in Germany earlier this year, my parents took us to the small village of Marktbreit for sightseeing. Even though it is very close to where I grew up, I don't remember ever seeing this special corner of the city, where lots of painters in the 19th century captured this view on their canvas. The cute timberframed house is actually a museum that houses a lot of these paintings.

I am equally excited about this animation that I tried for the first time! You can see my progress below.

In case this gif file doesn't work for you, here is my usual summary of the progress:

As you can see, I do some primary and very powerful colors in the beginning, just slapdashing them on the canvas. However they do correspond to the main light and dark areas, as you can see when you compare Step 1/2 and 7. The values are thus correctly placed, however, the colors don't matter and make it more colorful than restricting myself to the actual local color (e.g. grey castle, grey castle).

You can see all the subtle thin layers in this detail photo of the middle part . This is the shadow front of the (grey!) castle, along with the side and window in light on the right.

I really like all the subtle colors. I painted this from a photo of mine, with the shadow information from some photos of the city's website. Again, this is painted all in acrylics, very thin washes, with some of the light parts in thicker paint. The painting is 16"x20", took about 3 hours total.
