Lighthouses and Boats

Hello!!!
I haven't posted anything for a while, but was busy!
The first two are some small sketches with my travel gouache (opaque watercolor) kit. I took it to Disappearing Island between NSB and Ponce Inlet, where we spent the day with friends last weekend. The clouds were great, the sun not too much, and I could sit on the cooler and paint these two scenes of the Ponce Inlet lighthouse.

Habe mich schon lange nicht gemeldet, doch ich war ziemlich beschaeftigt!
The ersten zwei Bilder sind kleine Skizzen, die ich mit meinem Reisekasten von Gouache (undurchsichtige Wasserfarben, Kuenstler-Posterfarben) malte. Wir waren mit ein paar Freunden, die ein Boot haben, fuer den Tag auf der "Verschwindenden Insel" die zwischen New Smyrna Beach und Ponce Inlet liegt. Sie "verschwindet", wenn die Flut kommt, aber nicht ganz. 
Kurze Frage: Was ist besser, als ein Boot zu haben?
Antwort: Freunde mit Boot zu haben! (Dann muss man's naemlich spaeter nicht ewig saubermachen und in die Garage passen)
Ich sass auf dem grossen Cooler, und malte den Leuchtturm von Ponce Inlet. Sonne, Wolken, und Meer waren einfach fantastisch!

Then on Tuesday I met with my German painting buddy Irene under the Dunlawton Bridge to paint the shrimp boats that are usually docked there. It was nice and breezy under the bridge where we painted in the shadow of a palm tree. I painted in oils on a panel that I had toned/painted in black. It really makes the colors pop while you're painting. This is 14"x11" and took about 2 hours.

Am Dienstag dann traf ich mich mit Irene unter der Dunlawton Bridge in Port Orange, um die Schrimp-Schiffe zu malen, die dort meistens ankern. Es war kuehl und angenehm unter der Bruecke, wo wir im Schatten einer Palme malten. Ich malte auf einem schwarzen Board in Oel, was wirklich beim Malen die Farben betont. Ich brauchte etwa 2 Stunden.

Deleon Springs and Mexico!

Hello again!
3 weeks ago I was invited again to act as a judge at the spring festival in Deleon Springs. They have a wonderful community spirit, a great setting, and really neat arts and crafts. Local artist Jan Obendorfer was my fellow judge, and we had a hard time selecting first place. There were many cool pieces we've never seen before.

vor 3 Wochen wurde ich wieder eingeladen, in Deleon Springs als Juror Preise fuer tolle Kunstwerke auszugeben, beim alljaehrlichen Kunst- und Handwerks-Fest dort. Es war ein toller Tag unter den grossen Eichen, und meine Co-Jurorin Jan Obendorfer stimmte mir zu, dass es ziemlich schwer war, die verschiedenen Kunstwerke fuer den 1., 2. und 3. Preis auszusuchen... es waren so viele tolle Sachen zu sehen!

Last weekend Austin and I went with his work partners and their wives to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. What a wonderful place! I couldn't get over the rocky beaches, crashing waves, sea lions and dolphins, beautiful blooms in the rich neighborhoods, and dry/arid landscape everywhere else.

Letztes Wochenende waren Austin und ich mit seinen Geschaeftspartnern und deren Frauen in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Was fuer ein toller Ort! Ich kriegte mich nicht mehr mit den felsigen Kuesten und Straenden, den riesengrossen krachenden Wellen, Seeloewen und Delphine, wunderschoene Blumen, wo die reichen Touristen wohnten, und eine total duerre Landschaft und kahle Berge ueberall sonst.

Land's End

Between taking long walks in the neighborhoods, checking out the local market, snorkeling and discovering the beaches around Land's End, I had a bit of time to sketch. The long views are from the rooftop of the house we stayed in, and the last is from the beach near Land's End, the famous landmark at the southern tip of the Baja island.

Austin und ich spazierten viel in der Nachbarschaft herum, erkundeten die lokalen Maerkte, gingen schnorcheln, und besuchten die tollen Straende um Land's End herum. Ich hatte auch Zeit zum skizzieren/malen. Die langen Sichten sind von der Dachterrasse des Hauses, wo wir uebernachteten, und das lezte Gemaelde ist vom Strand bei Land's End, die beruehmte Felsenformation mit dem Bogen, was der suedlichste Punkt der Baja Halbinsel ist.

What a wonderful time and awesome landscape/sights! It's really beautiful there.

Was fuer ein toller Kurzurlaub, es ist wirklich wunderschoen dort!

Epcot Flower and Garden Festival 2016

Spring is here! Last weekend I spent painting with 15 other artists at Epcot in Orlando, to help lend a spring and festive air to the garden weekend. I was stationed in the UK, where they have beautiful blooming English tea gardens, a small windy street with pubs, and the day was interrupted by a cover band playing a medley of British rock.
Fruehling ist endlich hier! Letztes Wochenende verbrachte ich mit 15 anderen Kuenstlern in Epcot in Orlando, um dem Spring and Garden Festival dort eine festliche und kuenstlerische Atmosphaere zu geben. Dieses Jahr war ich in United Kingdom, wo es herrliche bluehende English Tea Garten gab, eine kleine kurvige Strasse mit Pubs, und alle paar Stunden spielte eine Band live British Rock.

Friday was humid and hot, Saturday was rained out til 3pm, and we could paint for only 3 hours, but Sunday was glorious. Wonderful sunshine, a great breeze, and no humidity. The festival was well-visited and we could entertain a lot of visitors and inquisitive children. So much fun!
Freitag war heiss und schwuel, Samstag war regnerisch bis 15 Uhr, und wir konnten nur ca. 3 Stunden am Nachmittag dann malen, aber Sonntag war herrlich. Wunderschoener Sonneneschein mit einer kleinen Briese, und ueberhaupt nicht schwuel. Der Park war voll, und wir konnten viele Touristen und Kinder mit unserer Kunst unterhalten. Viel Spass, wie immer!

Paris and Models

Hello again,
I forgot to post my new mixed media painting that was part of an exhibit at the Artist Workshop last month. It is based on a photo we took during our honeymoon in Paris. Acrylics on fabric and paper, along with some postage stamps and different texture.

ich habe total vergessen, Euch mein neuestes Mixed Media Gemaelde zu zeigen, das letzten Monat in einer Ausstellung in New Smyrna Beach hing. Es ist basiert auf ein Photo von Paris letztes Jahr. Acrylic Farben mit Briefmarken auf Stoff und Papier, auf Holz.

Boats and Nudes!

Good morning everybody
Last Tuesday the Plein Air group went to the Boondocks restaurant and marina, where we painted boats in the presence of some very patient pelicans. I set up with a few others right by the fish-cleaning station, and we had a group of pelicans sitting in the water for almost 2 hours, waiting for us to finally throw some fish guts - all they got was oohs and aaahs from us.

Letzten Dienstag traf sich unsere Malgruppe an einem Restaurant, das mit einem grossen Bootssteg am Halifax Fluss lag, und wir malten Boote mit gefiedertem Publikum. Ich stand mit einigen Kuenstlern an einem Holztisch, wo die Angler ihren Fang putzen, und diese wunderschoenen Pelikane sassen an die 2 Stunden geduldig vor uns im Wasser, ohne jedoch irgendwelche Fischreste von uns zu bekommen - wir bewunderten sie nur.

Yesterday evening we had a great model at the live model class, Pattie, and here are some of my oil sketches from her 10-20 minute poses. What fun!
Gestern abend hatten wir wieder mal ein tolles Modell, Pattie, in unserer Aktstunde, und hier sind einige meiner Oelskizzen von ihren 10-20minuetigen Posen. Macht so viel Spass!

Live Model Drawings

Happy Winter!
Since it has been really cold here in Florida recently, I haven't had a chance to join the plein air Tuesdays too much. The wind is really cold, even though it's always sunny. So here is some of the work I did during the last 3 live model sessions at the Artist Workshop.
Froehlicher Winter an Euch alle!
Da es zur Zeit ziemlich kalt hier in Florida ist (manchmal Frost in der Nacht, und knapp ueber 14 Grad am Tag brrrrr) habe ich nicht viel draussen mit der Gruppe gemalt. Hier sind Photos von 3 Wochen verschiedener Live-Modell Kunstsessions.


January - Rachel, very professional model with awesome poses. We usually do 5 two-minute poses for warm-up, then 2 five-minute poses for a longer sketch, usually in charcoal, and then a couple of 10 minutes, and at the end 2 twenty-minute poses, for which I tried my oils. I was very pleased with them, to get a whole pose in color and pretty darn correct proportions in oil in 20 minutes!
Januar - Rachel, ein sehr professionales Modell mit tollen Poses. Normalerweisen waermen wir uns alle mit 5 zwei-minuetigen Posen auf, dann 2 fuenf-minuten Posen fuer eine laengere Skizze, ueblicherweise in Kohle, dann ein paar fuer 10 Minuten, und am Schluss mindestens 2 zwanzig-minuetige Posen, wo man wirklich arbeiten kann, und ich endlich meine Oelfarben ausprobieren konnte. Ich war sehr zufrieden mit den Oelskizzen, ein farbliches Gemaelde mit guten Proportionen zu kriegen in nur 20 Minuten!

January - our model canceled, so all of us 5 participants took turns modeling for each other, but with our clothes on. We can all honestly say we have a HUGE appreciation for the paid models now. It's really hard, not only finding a good pose, but also holding it for so many minutes! Below are various poses from various artists.

Januar - unser Modell sagte kurzfristig ab, und so einigten wir 5 Kuenstler uns darauf, dass jeder in Kleidung 3-4 Posen fuer die anderen machte. Wir koennen nun wirklich ehrlich sagen, dass wir unsere Modelle echt bewundern und auch anerkennen fuer ihre Arbeit, denn fuer einige Minuten still zu sizten, und ueberhaupt erstmal gute Posen zu machen, ist wirklich kein leichtes Stueck! Unten einige meiner Skizzen von den Mitkollegen.

February - Steve, finally a male professional model, who was also very experienced and offered great poses. I tried my oils again for the longer poses, and again, quite pleased with them. It's so much fun and really helps with painting landscapes and other sujects!

Februar - Steve, endlich mal ein maennliches Modell, der auch sehr professionell und kundig war. Ich probierte meine Oelfarben wieder fuer die laengeren Posen aus, und bin wirklich zufrieden mit allen! Mir macht das wirklich Spass, und es hilft auch mit anderen Malweisen. 

I have been jumping around quite a bit with different things recently, but I'm having a good time trying all these things and will definitely post more drawings, paintings, and all the other cool ideas that are currently floating around in my head.
In letzter Zeit habe ich ziemlich viel neues probiert, was mir sehr viel Spass macht, und ich verspreche, dass noch mehr neues Zeug kommen wird.

I haven't posted in a while, but I did quite a few new things, so here they are in random order.
Guten Rutsch nochmal! Ich habe wenig geschrieben, aber viel gemalt. Hier sind meine Resultate von den letzten Wochen:

I joined the Tuesday night Live Model Class at the Artist Workshop. A different model each week, it's so much fun! My first time drawing / painting from a live (nude) model. (The little girl modeling was dressed)

Ich fing an, mit einer lokalen Gruppe Aktmodelle bzw Modelle live to zeichnen/malen. Das Maedchen ist (bekleidet) eingesprungen, da das normale Modell abgesagt hatte. Es war die Tochter eines anderen Kuenstlers. Es macht soviel Spass, ich wollte schon immer von einem Modell live malen!
