Audrey R. wanted to learn about sketching, composing a scene, and value studies. So I went around the lighthouse in Ponce Inlet with her, discussing scenes and worthwhile compositions, while sketching the main elements. Here are some samples from my sketchbook.
Audrey R. wollte mehr ueber Komposition, skizzieren, und tonale Studien lernen. Wir liefen in der Gegend des Leuchtturms in Ponce Inlet herum, diskutierten gute Szenen und wie man sie auf der Leinwand komponieren koennte. Hier einige Skizzen von meinem Notizblock.
Andrea F. is new to plein air and wanted to get some pointers. I also met with her at the lighthouse and we attacked a scene that I have painted about 10 years ago. This was one of my first plein air paintings, and lo and behold, the scene was still almost the same. However, you can see that by switching up your colors, esp. the underpainting, it gives a totally different effect. She tried my pochade box and really liked it. We kind of painted this one together after doing the value sketch, but she finished it at home from the sketch and photos. It came out great!
Andrea F. ist neu zum Plein Air Malen und wollte einfach von grundauf lernen. Auch mit ihr ging ich zum Leuchtturm, und wir beschaeftigten uns mit einer Szene, die ich vor 10 Jahren als eines meiner ersten Plein Air Gemaelde gemalt hatte. Es war fast alles noch genau wie damals. Man kann jedoch sehen, dass man mit ein bisschen verschiedenen Grundtoenen und Farben eine total andere Stimmung bekommt. Wir fingen mit der Komposition in einem Notizbuch an, nur auf Grautoenen konzentrierend, und dann probierte sie meine Pochade Box aus, waehrend wir zusammen das Bild fast fertigmalten.

2. Value study. I just love this scene. It's so interesting, even in black and white.
3. This was my painting 10 years ago, with a burnt sienna underpainting.
4. This is my student's final painting, with a cool yellow underpainting and cool colors on top, and creative editing (use your artistic license!)
