Wow, es war eine ganz schoen hektische Woche fuer unseren 7. Paintout hier in New Smyrna Beach! Total heisse Temperaturen, jeden Morgen und Nachmittag in 30+ Grad und hoher Schwuele malen, Parties und Nachtleben jeden Abend - aber auch gute Kameradschaft mit alten und neuen Freunden, grossartigen Verkaeufen und gutes Essen!
I started the paintout on Monday morning by setting up at our favorite vegetable stand on N Dixie Frwy in New Smyrna Beach.
Ich fing am Montag Morgen an, unseren Lieblings Gemuesestand in New Smyrna Beach (NSB) zu malen.

I loved how the morning sun hit the house in the back, and the two main tents being so dark with the produce in front being highlighted by the sun. Lots of shoppers stopped and chatted with me, one even offered me a tip! There's a first for everything! ;-)
Die Sonne scheint am Morgen immer schoen auf das gelbe Haus im Hintergrund, und die zwei "Zelte", unter denen man sein Gemuese aussucht, sind dann so dunkel dagegen, mit den Fruechten am Eingang, die die Sonne auch ein bisschen einfangen. Es waren natuerlich viele Einkaeufer dort, die mit mir schwatzten, und eine wollte mir sogar ein Trinkgeld geben! Das war auch das erstemal, dass sowas passiert ist!

I felt really good about this painting and decided it was my new favorite of mine.
Sobald ich es unterzeichnete, fuehlte ich, dass dies mein neues Lieblingsgemaelde war, es war so gut gelungen!

In the afternoon I met up with fellow artist Cathy Berse and we painted small scenes on the sidewalk at the Black Heritage Museum in NSB. I decided to offer that painting at the auction on Wednesday.
Am Nachmittag traf ich mich mit einer anderen Malerin und wir malten beide eine kleine Szene auf dem Gehsteig am kleinen "Museum der Farbigen Traditionen". Ich waehlte dieses Gemaelde fuer die Auktion am Mittwoch.

After finishing in the early afternoon, I went home and framed those paintings.
Wir hoerten ziemlich bald auf, und ich ging heim, um diese ersten Gemaelde zu rahmen und dann am Morgen in die Gallerie zu bringen.

Tuesday started hot and humid again, it was almost unbearable. However, I had scouted out the area for months, and wanted to finally try my hand at two old buildings by the side of the freeway that were boarded up. I had noticed that the morning sun highlighted the pillars on the 2-story house really nicely, and I wanted to capture that.
Der Dienstag find schon wieder heiss und schwuel an, es war fast unertraeglich. Es hatte mind. 32 Grad im Schatten. Ich hatte jedoch die Gegend schon seit Monaten fuer gute Szenen ausgekundschaftet, da ich ja hier wohne, und wollte nun endlich mal zwei alte Haeuser malen, die ein bisschen versetzt von der Schnellstrasse sassen. Ich hatte oefters gesehen, wie sie von der Morgensonne total toll beleuchtet werden.
This was the scene, and my car shielded me from the traffic.
Dies ist die Szene, und mein Auto schuetzte mich vom nahen Verkehr.My friend and fellow artist Irene (not participating in the paintout) offered her company and sat me with for a while. Cathy Berse lent me her umbrella, and thank God for that! There was not much shade, unless I wanted to crawl into a palmtree, and the umbrella was just enough to shade me and most importantly, my palette and canvas. They have to be in shade, as your painting will turn out totally dark, if you mix and paint in direct sun.
Meine deutsche Freundin Irene, die oefters mit mir malt, jedoch nicht am Paintout teilnimmt, bot mir ihre Begleitung an, und sie sass mit mir fuer eine gute Stunde. Die andere Malerin von gestern leihte mir ihren Mal-Sonnenschirm, ohne den ich wahrscheinlich verschmelzt waere. Es gab am Strassenrand einfach keinen guten Schatten, es sei denn, ich haette mich direkt in eine Palme gesetzt, doch der Schirm leistete mir genau soviel Schatten, wie ich brauchte fuer mich, aber noch wichtiger, fuer meine Mischpalette und die Leinwand. Die muessen naemlich im Schatten sein, sonst malt man (unabsichtlich) das Gemaelde viel zu dunkel.
This is how I started in acrylics, and this is the scene with me almost done.
Hier mein Akryl-Anfang, und dann die Szene mit dem fast fertigen Gemaelde.
I painted on a rather large canvas, 20"x16"! but my lively brushstrokes really showed up nicely at the large size. During the underpainting stage the heat really got to me, I was pretty much soaked after the first half hour. However, once I started with the highlights in oils, I could see this was going to be another winner, and I was in the zone. I forgot about the cars rushing by, the burning sun and the sweat running down my back, and just painted my heart out.
Ich malte auch einem meiner groessten Leinwaende (50cm x 40cm)! aber meine losen Pinselstriche zeichneten sich in dieser Groesse echt gut aus. Waehrend der Vorzeichnung wuerde mir die Hitze was zuviel. Ich war ganz nass vom Schwitzten. Als ich jedoch dann mit den Oelfarben anfing, konnte ich sehen, dass dies wieder ein gewinnendes Gemaelde wuerde, und kam ich total in den Eifer. Ich vergass den brausenden Verkehr hinter mir, die brennende Sonne, und der Schweiss, der mir den Ruecken runterlief...und malte, bis ich fertig war.
As soon as I put it in a frame later that night, I knew it was another winner, and my next favorite painting!
Sobald ich es am Abend rahmte, wusste ich, dass es mein naechstes Lieblingsgemaelde ist!
Old Florida - oil on panel 20"x16" (50cm x 40cm) SOLD
I went to lunch at the wet room which consisted of two nice white tents in front of Outriggers at the New Smyrna Marina. We artists were provided with nice lunch and ice cold water every day. I hung my two paintings from Monday and then looked around for more things to paint.
Ich fuhr dann zum Mittagessen zur Gallerie, wo die Kuenstler sich ausruhen konnten mit gratis Sandwiches und kaltem Wasser, und wo die Zuschauer die fertigen Gemaelde beschauen konnten. Ich hing meine 2 Bilder vom Montag und fuhr dann ein bisschen herum, um mehr Szenen auszukundschaften fuer die naechsten Tage.
About 2.5 hours later I got a call that my painting of Perrine's Produce had been sold to a couple from down South! Wow, I was so excited! What a great start to the week!
Zweieinhalb Stunden spaeter rief mich die Gallerie an, dass das allererste Gemaelde vom Gemueseladen schon verkauft wurde! Wow, das war vielleicht aufregend. So ein toller Anfang fuer die Woche!
