Pen and Ink Process

Hello again!
I showed a new painting to my Pen and Ink class this week, and promised to show the process photos.
Diese Woche habe ich meiner Klasse ein neues Bild gezeigt, und versprochen, den Prozess zu zeigen.

1. I started on medium-heavy watercolor paper, size is about 14x18. I took some acrylic paints (burnt sienna and buff titanium) and splashed some color where I saw the main shadows in the reference photo, and I also made a dark mark where the door would be.
1. Ich fing mit Aquarellpapier an, wobei ich mit Akrylfarben auf's Papier "wild" malte, wo ich die dunkelsten Stellen auf meinem Referenzphoto sah, z.B. die dunkle Holztuer.

2. I then started drawing with my cartridge pen that holds water-soluble ink. You can see that the door falls right where my dark colors are.

2. Dann nahm ich meinen Fueller, der wasserloesliche Tinte haelt, und fing zum Zeichnen an. Ihr seht, dass die Tuer genau richtig faellt.

3. I then took my cool gadget (brush with water reservoir in the handle, but you can also just use a normal watercolor brush and dip it in water) and brushed the ink from my drawn lines to create the shadows in nice small gradations.

3. Dann fing ich an, mit Wasser durch die Tintenlinien zu ziehen, womit ich die graduierten Tintenlasuren erreichte, um die Schatten anzuzeigen.

4. In this close-up please note the two medallions underneath the main character. The one on the left already has the subtle ink wash for shadows, while the one on the right is still just pure ink lines. You can see how quickly and easily you can develop the 3-D form and make it round and come forward.

4, Hier ein Detailphoto, bitte die zwei Medallions unter dem Ritter betrachten. Links habe ich schon die zarten Schatten gemalt (mit Wasser durch die Linien gezogen), waehrend rechts nur die rohe Linien-Zeichnung zu sehen ist. Wie man sieht, Schatten machen die Formungen und alles plastisch.

5. This picture shows the whole thing almost finished, with the text markings in the middle still being contemplated. I painted the words by just making small pen strokes, some rounded, some with long ascenders and descenders in straight lines to resemble text.

5. Dieses Bild zeigt das Bild dem Ende nahend (nach ca. 1 Stunde), mit der Mitte auf den Text wartend. Ich konnte nicht alle eingravierten Woerter zeichnen, deswegen machte ich einfach ein paar Stakkato-Linien, was von weiter weg wie eingemeisselter Text aussieht.

6. This is my reference photo. It's the portal of the Water Castle in Bad Rappenau in Germany.

6. Hier mein Referenzphoto, das Portal des Wasserschlosses in Bad Rappenau.

7. This is the final painting. I had a cream-colored mat and it didn't really provide enough contrast to the watercolor paper. So I masked off about 1/4" and put gold leaf on it, which not adhering in all places equally gave it a very artistic touch.

7. Hier das fertige Gemaelde. Ich hatte ein beiges Passpartout, aber da es nicht genug Kontrast zu meinem Papier hatte, legte ich etwa 10cm breites Goldblatt an, um eine schoene kuenstlerische Umrandung zu bekommen.

Daytona Oceanwalk and Portraits!

Last weekend I did a little Pen and Ink sketch when we took a walk along the beach with the kids.
Hallo!
Am letzten Wochenende malte ich eine kleine Skizze mit Tusche, als wir mit den Kindern am Strand spazieren gingen.

The pen and ink took about 15 minutes, and the color wash in gouache another 5. A nice takeaway.
Fuer die Tuschezeichnung brauchte ich ca. 15 Minuten, und die Gouache-Farben obendrueber nochmal 5. Ein schoenes kleines Souvenir.


On Tuesday none of the usual models could pose for our Live Model Drawing Class, so I asked my son and his girlfriend to pose for the group. Even though it was both their first time ever, they both did excellent and held their poses without moving at all (note: they posed clothed). They even did 30+ minutes! It was great, because this way we could do portraits and also a "grouping", since we had the two of them. Below are my best drawings from last night.
Gestern am Dienstag sagte leider keines der ueblichen Modelle zu unserer 3-Stuendingen Live-Modell-Klasse zu. Ich fragte meinen Sohn und dessen Freundin, fuer unsere Gruppe zu posieren. Obwohl sie beide das allererstemal dies machten (bekleidet!), waren beide exzellent und hielten ihre Posen ohne irgendwelche Bewegung. Sie posierten sogar fuer mehr als 30 Minuten am Stueck! Es war echt toll, denn diesesmal konnten wir uns auf Portraits konzentrieren, und auch eine "Gruppenpose" malen. Unten sind meine besten Zeichnungen von gestern abend.

I just started my 4-week class of "Pen and Ink with colorful Washes", but will post about it when it's all done and I actually have some photos and drawings to show at the end of January. It went very well and I believe my excitement caught on... More later...
Heute morgen fing mein 4-woechiger Kurs in "Tuschezeichnen mit Farben" an, doch ich will spaeter im Januar darueber berichten, da ich dann mehr Info und Photos habe. Aber es wurde gut empfangen und die Schueler waren fast so begeistert wie ich... mehr spaeter...

Anyway, I discovered a new style of painting while messing around on the internet. It's basically a colorful messy underpainting in acrylics with glazes and layers in oil on top. Which is totally different to how I paint, as I always am too impatient for layers and glazes, I just paint alla prima (in one sitting).
The inspiring artist is Dan Nelson. He also does pen and ink, which is how I found him. I just love his style of painting and the glow and light he gets with this unusual underpainting. So I already did two paintings in the studio in the last 3 weeks, and can't wait to try it out when doing plein air!

Okay, um zum Thema zu kommen, ich habe eine neue Technik entdeckt, waehrend ich auf dem Internet gesurft habe. Es faengt praktisch mit einer sehr farbigen, aber sehr chaotischen Untermalung in Akryl an, wonach man dann mit Oel langsam und in Schichten druebermalt. Was natuerlich ganz anders ist, als ich bisher gemalt habe. Ich male ja immer Alla Prima, also alles fertig in einer Sitzung...
Der Kuenstler, der mich inspiriert hat, ist Dan Nelson. Er zeichnet auch toll mit Tusche, so habe ich ihn gefunden. Ich finde seinen Stil total schoen, vor allem, wie er dieses gluehende Licht mit dieser ungewoehnlichen Untermalung erzeugt. Ich nun mich nun ins Studio gesetzt und schon zwei Gemaelde in dieser Technik gemalt, und kann es nicht erwarten, auch draussen in Plein Air zu versuchen!

The collage above shows the steps. It starts very colorful, but messy, until you scrub in some white, and then carefully glaze and paint with oils on top.

Die Collage zeigt die Schritte. Es faengt ganz wild und farblich an, bis man dann mit Weiss ein bisschen uebermalt, und dann mit Oel vorsichtig das Licht erzeugt.

And here is the second painting: Morning on the Canal - Venice  20"x16". 

Und hier ist das zweite Gemaelde, Morgen auf dem Kanal in Venedig  51cm x 41cm.

Unfortunately I did not take any photos of the different steps, but believe me, it started out real wild and messy. I would love you feedback, what do you think?

Leider habe ich keine Photos waehrend des Malens gemacht, aber glaubt mir, es fing ganz wild und chaotisch an. Ich wuerde gerne eure Meinung hoeren, was denkt ihr?

Quick Draw and Commission

Hello everybody!
First off, thanks to everybody who took advantage of my Christmas Sale, I am so glad that so many of my paintings will be a surprise under the tree and grace someone's walls now!!!

erstmal moechte ich mich bei allen bedanken, die an meinem Kunst-Sale teilgenommen haben. Ich bin so happy, dass so viele meiner Gemaelde unter einem Weihnachtsbaum liegen und bald andere Waende als meine verzieren!

Yesterday was the rescheduled QuickDraw event in New Smyrna Beach from the Canaveral Paintout back in October. Everybody could participate, and we even had artists from way out of town there! We had 16 artists who had to pay a registration fee that went towards the "Raise The Roof" Project of the Artists Workshop. At 9am sharp we all started our paintings around the sunny and warm Riverside Park in New Smyrna Beach. Exactly 2 hours later the horn tooted and we had to stop painting. We all finished our paintings in this short time, though.
Gestern war unser QuickDraw, der wegen des Hurrikans im Oktober auf heute verlegen wurde. Jeder konnte teilnehmen, und wir hatten sogar auswaertige Kuenstler da! Es waren insgesamt 16 Kuenstler, die alle eine Teilnahmegebuer zahlen mussten, die dann dem neuen Dach unseres Malclubs zustande kam, was nun endlich repariert ist, aber immer noch abbezahlt wird... Um genau 9 Uhr morgens fingen wir alle an, im Park in der herrlich warmen Sonne zu malen. Genau 2 Stunden spaeter wurde die Sirene geblasen, und alle mussten mit dem Malen aufhoeren. Wir konnten jedoch alle unsere Werke fertigstellen in dieser kurzen Zeit.

This was the scene I selected. I really liked the palm trees and the slanted shadows from the window awnings on the bottom left.

Dies ist die Szene, die mich ansprach. Ich fand die Gruppe der Palmen toll, und die schraegen Schatten der Rolladen des unteren Fensters.

Here is a quick progress collage of my painting which I was very happy with. A bunch of palm trees catching the morning sun in a side yard just across the street. I started on a white panel that I quickly toned in a warm yellow of acrylics. While that dried I squeezed out my paints and then could start shortly after. My process is the same as usual, and I had just enough time to finish the painting. Andrea, who had some private lessons with me recently, was painting alongside me, another house in the other direction. She did really good, considering this was a real tight time restraint for a beginner!
Hier eine kurze Collage meiner Gemaeldes, das ich auf weiss anfing, wie es in den Regeln hiess. Ich rieb schnell ein bisschen warmes Gelb von Acrylic auf die Leinwand, und waehrend ich meine Palette vorbereitete und meine Oelfarben ausdrueckte, trocknete diese Unterfarbe schnell, und ich konnte innerhalb 5 Minuten mit dem Malen anfangen. Meinen Malprozess kennt ihr ja schon. Andrea, meine Privatschuelerin, malte nebe mir, in die andere Richtung, und obwohl es erst ihr 3. Plein Air Gemaelde war, und auch noch unter Zeitdruck, war sie echt zufrieden, und auch ich!

A minivan parked right in front of my scene towards the end, but I was already finished with that part. That's why it's so important to make an initial sketch, lay in your shadows right away, and paint on your canvas overall instead of finishing one part and then move to the next one!

Ein Minivan parkte direkt vor meiner Szene am Ende, doch ich war schon fertig, so war es also nicht schlimm. Deswegen ist es immer wichtig, eine schnelle Skizze am Anfang zu machen, gleich die Schatten einzulegen, und ueberall gleichzeitig am Bild zu malen (nicht erst den Hintergrund, und dann vielleicht das Haus, und dann den Vordergrund)...

After a quick cleaning up, we took our paintings still on the easels to the park's gazebo where everybody who was present at the park at the time was allowed to vote for "People's Choice". Distinguished local artist Morgan Samuel Price was the judge and awarded First and Second Prizes which included cash. While I did not win anything, Morgan talked to me personally afterwards, and it was a great event and a lot of fun! And I got another nice-looking painting out of it, alongside with great camaraderie! Here are some of the paintings in detail.
Wir hatten ein paar Minuten Zeit, aufzuraeumen, und dann wurden die Bilder auf den Staffeleien am Gazebo aufgestellt, wo dann jeder, der zufaellig im Park war, fuer sein Lieblingsbild waehlen konnte, und eine sehr anerkannte Malerin (Morgan Samuel Price) gab dann die Preise fuer 1. und 2. Platz aus. Ich gewann leider nichts, doch Morgan sprach dann persoenlich mit mir ueber mein Bild, das ihr auch sehr gefallen hatte. Es war ein toller Event und viel Spass. Und ich bin total zufrieden und stolz auf mein Bild! Hier noch ein paar Bilder mit allen Werken...

IN OTHER NEWS:
I finished a commission for a dog portrait as a Christmas gift. I did it in the modern whimsical style, which I love and has so much impact. Hope the customer's relative will like it!
Noch eine Neuigkeit:
Vor einigen Tagen vollendete ich eine Kommission fuer ein Hundeportrait fuer ein Weihnachtsgeschenk. Ich malte es in meinem modernen und "drolligen" Stil. Ich hoffe, dass der Onkel meiner Kundin, fuer den es bestimmt ist, es auch mag!

All paintings are done in oil, painted on 1/4" gessoed MDF board, and are varnished. 

I will ship them for FREE in the US, and for an additional $15 to Germany. No frame included, but they are all standard US sizes, so they easily slip into any wooden frame (no glass or mat needed) that you can pick up at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or similar.

Alle Gemaelde sind auf 5mm Brettern in Oel gemalt, und mit Firnis versehen. Nach Deutschland kann ich die Gemaelde fuer $15 extra schicken. Ohne Rahmen. Some news at the end of the year

Hello everybody. Here are some news that I wanted to share.
Hallihallo ihr alle! Hier sind ein paar Neuigkeiten, die ich euch erzaehlen will.

I got notified that Disney is changing up their Spring and Garden Festival in the coming years, and will be discontinuing the plein air artists' participation. How sad! It was so nice to go there in the spring and interact with the tourists while painting. Not to mention the great room and board! Oh well...
Ich bekam einen Anruf und eine Email, dass Disney das Spring and Garden Festival nun aendern werden, und ab jetzt keine Plein Air Maler mehr einladen werden. Wie traurig! Es war immer so schoen, im Fruehlung dort zu malen und mit den Touristen zu schwatzen. Ganz abgesehen von der tollen Unterkunft und Verspeisung! Nun ja... 

So something else opened up instead! I was accepted into the Winter Park Paintout! Yippee! Click on the link to check it out, but unfortunately it still shows the artists and gallery from this year.
But I am really excited, it is a very prestigious event, and I am so happy I made it - which is solely based on your artwork! I will of course write about it when it comes about.
Doch nun hat sich eine andere Tuer fuer mich geoeffnet! Ich wurden in den Winter Park Paintout akzeptiert. Klickt auf den Link, doch leider stehen immer noch die Bilder und Maler von 2016 dort. Ich bin total begeistert, denn dies ist ein sehr angesehenes Event und ich bin so happy, dass ich es endlich reingeschafft habe. Man wird auf Grund von seinen Werken akzeptiert! Ich werde dann im April natuerlich darueber genauenst berichten...

Here is my newest painting, it's mixed media with acrylics, black gesso, ink, pastels, and gold leaf. I am showing the progress in the first 3 pictures, and also the final painting in 4 various lighting situations, because the gold leaf effect changes with every angle you view it at.
Und hier ist mein neuestes Gemaelde. Mixed Media mit Acryl-Farben, schwarzer Tusche, Pastell und Goldblatt. Ich zeige den Vorgang in den ersten 3 Bildern, und dann das fertige Gemaelde, in vier verschiedenen Lichtsituationen, da sich das Goldblatt total anders zeigt, je nachdem von welchem Winkel man es anschaut.
