New Pochade Box / Neuer Malkasten

Here are some pictures of the new pochade box I started using this weekend. I built it by myself from instructions found here: http://www.pochadeboxpaintings.com/2009/02/how-to-build-your-own-pochade-box.html (Thanks, Jim!)

It was very easy to build, has more space than the small cigar box I have been using thus far (bought at ebay), and with the flatter mixing area I can finally do some knife painting. I put a piece of plexiglass in the mixing area, for easier cleanup. It doesn't hold any tubes of paint, but those are carried with all the other stuff in my big bag, anyway. After a test drive of the recent 4 paintings this weekend I am very pleased with it. I also made the wet panel carrier a few weeks ago, similar to the one in the instructions.

Er ist ein bisschen groesser als die Zigarrenkiste, die ich bisher benutzt habe (von ebay gekauft), und dank der flachen Konstruktion kann ich nun auch Spachtelgemaelde herstellen. Ich bin sehr zufrieden damit, und habe mir auch vor einiger Zeit die Schachtel gebaut, womit man nasse Gemaelde heimtransportieren kann.

Side By Side

Turned a little south and found this charming spot at the boat yard, with these two boats waiting for repairs. The shadows were very deep, the light gleaming - what a great subject! Painted a bit thicker and looser than usual. 8x10, oil on masonite. SOLD.

Ein paar Schritte zum Sueden gedreht, fand ich diese charmante Szene mit zwei Booten, die auf Reperatur warteten. Tiefe Schatten und gleissende Sonne - was fuer ein tolles Subjekt. Habe ein bisschen mehr impasto und loser als sonst gemalt. 20x25cm, Oel. VERKAUFT.

At Ponce Inlet

This morning in Ponce Inlet, across from the lighthouse. The sun was raking across this small shed behind a tourist shop, with a vast expanse of empty parking lot in front. 8x10, oil on masonite. $300.

Heute morgen in Ponce Inlet, ein kleiner Schuppen mit tollen Schattenspielen, gegenueber vom Leuchtturm. 20x25cm, Oel auf Pressbord.

Sunny Bridge

After finishing the painting at the park I went to Sugar Mill Gardens again and painted this stone bridge being hit by the morning sun. 5x7. $100.

Nachdem ich das Gemaelde im Park fertiggestellt hatte, malte ich diese Szene einer kleinen Steinbruecke mit einer grossen Eiche im Hintergrund in Sugar Mill Gardens. 12x18cm.

Sunny Path

Sunlight hitting a walking path at Reed Canal Park in South Daytona at 9am this morning. The trunks of the trees were almost white. Beautiful scenery to capture. 8x10, oil on masonite. $300.

Die Morgensonne beleuchtete die Baumstaemme in einem Park in South Daytona, so dass sie fast weiss waren. 9 Uhr morgens, 20x25cm.

Downtown Palms

Last night was another First Friday exhibition downtown Daytona Beach. To enjoy the cool evening breeze outside of the exhibition space, I set up on the sidewalk and painted this view looking north, 8x10, oil on masonite. $300.

It was nice chatting with the many art patrons who came and other artists. On top of that, I sold a painting at the end of the night, "Sunglow Pier" from last weekend! All around a very nice experience.

Gestern abend hatten wir wieder unsere First Friday Ausstellung. Da es ziemlich warm im Gebaeude war, stellte ich mich mit Staffelei draussen auf dem Gehsteig auf, wo ich diese Szene produzieren konnte, waehrend ich mit vielen Besuchern und den anderen Kuenstlern plaudern konnte. 20x25cm. Und am Ende des Abends verkaufte ich noch eines meiner Bilder, "Sunglow Pier" vom letzten Wochenende. Im grossen und ganzen ein toller Abend!

Mile Marker

In the afternoon we took the ferry over to Hontoon Island State Park by DeLand and we all painted this mile marker sitting in the St. Johns River. It was stifling hot and we were exhausted, so this one might get some adjustments later on... All in all, a good day with 3 paintings!

Am Nachmittag fuhren wir mit einer kleinen Faehre ueber den St. Johns River zum Hontoon Island Park bei DeLand and malten diesen Meilen-Marker im Fluss. Es war unglaublich heiss - ich denke, ich werde spaeter ein paar Stellen daran aendern... Im grossen und ganzen jedoch ein sehr produktiver Tag mit 3 Gemaelden!

Blue Springs State Park

This morning I met my artist friends Sharon and Dodi at the Blue Springs Park and first we painted the Thursby House. There are so many great views here, I am sure we'll come back and paint another corner of the house some day. 8x10. $300.

Heute morgen traf ich mich mit meinen Mal-Freunden Sharon und Dodi im Park von Blue Springs and wir malten alle das alte Thursby Haus. Dieses Haus ist sehr malerisch und ich bin sicher, dass ich bald wieder zurueckkomme, um eine andere Sicht davon auf die Leinwand zu bannen. 8x10 as usual.

On the way to lunch a quick tree study along the way. I liked how the sun lit up the path in the back. 5x7. Oil on canvas panel.

Auf dem Weg zum Mittagessen eine schnelle Oelskizze, wie die Sonne den Pfad hinter den Bauemen belichtete.

DJ's Deck

Coming back from the beach at 9am, I stopped under the bridge and found this setup quite interesting. I wasn't sure how long the boat would be docked there, so I blocked it in quickly.

Als ich vom Strand ueber die Bruecke kam, stoppte ich bei diesem Restaurant und malte diese Szene.
The sun was still very hazy, the shadows weren't too great, but I'm quite pleased with this second painting before 10am! 10x8 oil on Masonite.

Es war immer noch ziemlich dunstig, und die Schatten waren nicht allzu schoen, doch ich bin sehr zufrieden mit diesem zweiten Gemaelde vor 10 Uhr morgens! 20x25cm, Oel auf Platte.

Sunglow Pier

Just a tiny one this morning at 8am at the beach. It's 5"x7", to capture that hazy effect when the sun was already high in the sky, and it was getting overcast. There was barely a distinction between the horizon and the ocean. SOLD.

Eine klitzekleine Studie 12x18cm am Strand heute frueh um 8 Uhr. Es war sehr dunstig und man konnte kaum Himmel und Meer unterscheiden. VERKAUFT.

What is PLEIN AIR?

The question has come up: "What is plein air?" and "Why do you inform about the time it takes you to paint a certain painting?"

Plein air is a term derived from the French phrase en plein air, which literally means 'in the open air'. It's a familiar concept today, but in the late 1800s when the Impressionists ventured out of their studios into nature to investigate and capture the effects of sunlight and different times of days on a subject, it was quite revolutionary.

Plein air painting used to be just a means to an end, with the artist painting small studies on location, to use the information gathered about color, shadow effects, etc. for a larger, elaborate painting that was going to be executed in the studio. Nowadays, however, it is a stand-alone art form and is used to produce finished paintings.

It is quite an experience to be outside in nature, feeling the heat, the wind, hearing the birds and encountering wildlife, while trying to capture a scene on canvas. With the sun shifting - and thus changing the shadows and light effects - you only have a window of about 2-3 hours at most before the scene changes completely due to the natural course of the sun. So in addition to enduring heat or cold, wind, bugs, curious wildlife and/or tourists, you have a limited time frame to put down your artistic statement. That's the reason why I sometimes add the time it takes me to complete a painting.

Since I took my first plein air workshop in October 2008 with Larry Moore (http://www.larrymoorestudios.com/) I have ventured out quite a bit, and actually find it hard now to paint from a photo. A photo does not give you all the information you encounter on site. It flattens the picture, and makes anything in the shade just dark, amongst other issues...

Ich hatte einige Fragen ueber die Phrase "Plein Air" und warum ich manchmal anzeige, wie lange es fuer ein jeweiliges Gemaelde dauert.
Plein Air kommt aus dem Franzoesischen und bedeutet "in der freien Luft". Im 19ten Jahrhundert fingen die Impressionisten an, das Studio zu verlassen und nach draussen zu gehen, um die Natur und die Effekte der Sonne und verschiedene Tageszeiten auf die Leinwand zu bannen.
Plein Air Malen war jedoch nur als Studie gedacht, so dass man spaeter die Information, die man ueber Farbe und Lichteffekte draussen eingefangen hatte, fuer ein groesseres Studio-Gemaelde benutzen konnte. Heutzutage ist Plein Air jedoch eine eigene Artform.
Wenn man draussen "an Ort und Stelle" malt, ist dies ein ganz anderes Erlebnis als drinnen im Studio vor einem aufgebauten Stilleben mit kontrolliertem Licht, oder gar einem Photo, zu sitzen. Durch die staendig wandernde Sonne und somit wechselnden Lichteffektten hat man draussen nur hoechstens 2-3 Stunden, um die Szene mit Farbe und Pinsel einzufangen. Dazu kommen die Elemente, denen man ausgesetzt ist, Hitze, Wind, Insekten, neugierige Touristen, etc. Deswegen schreibe ich manchmal, in welcher (relativ kurzen) Zeit ich ein bestimmtes Gemaelde fertiggestellt habe.
Seit ich einen Workshop (Malkurs) mit Larry Moore im Oktober 2008 mitgemacht habe, bin ich ganz begeistert vom Plein Air Malen, und finde es nun sehr schwierig, von Photos zu malen. Die Kamera faengt alles ein, macht jedoch alles platt, und dringt nicht durch die Schatten durch, die sie als flache Schwaerze anzeigt. An Ort und Stelle kann man viel mehr Details sehen - und ausserdem macht es einfach viel mehr Spass!

Jetski

This morning I went back to the Port Orange marina and painted this view from across the street. I liked the juxtaposition of the old rundown buildings with the faded lettering against the gleaming condos across the river in the distance. 8x10, oil on masonite. $300.

Heute morgen malte ich diese Szene beim alten Hafen in Port Orange, wo man vor Jahren Jetskis mieten konnte. Ich fand den Kontrast zwischen den alten Gebaeuden mit dem kaum lesbaren Schild und den neuen Hochhaeusern am Strand, die man im Hintergrund sehen kann, sehr interessant. Dazwischen liegt der Halifax River. 20x25cm, 1 Stunde bei ueber 30 Grad Hitze.

Swimming Pool Mural

A mural I did for a client around his swimming pool a couple of years ago. Dolphins, manatee, some clown fish and around the edge some algae and corals. Most of it done freehand, or with self-made templates. I did it in the summer, so being near the water while working was very tempting!

Ein Mural fuer einen Klienten vor ein paar Jahren gemalt. Fast alles freihaendig, oder von meinen selbstgemachten Schablonen gemalt. Hat viel Spass gemacht, und das nahe Wasser hat mich fast vom Malen abgelenkt, da ich es im heissen Sommer gemalt habe.

Kids Murals

I haven't painted in a while, due to the heat and my kids' summer schedule. I have been asked recently about my murals, so I am posting some that I did a couple of years back. The girl's castle I did freehand, spontaneously, in my daughter's room when she was little. The fence wass painted, but the curtain and its hanging device were real, also self-made. The animals I painted for my son when he was 5. Both murals are painted over now to reflect their "grown-up" tween tastes.

Ich habe schon einige Tage nicht mehr gemalt, wegen der Hitze und den Sommerferien. Hier sind ein paar Wandgemaelde/Murale, vor einigen Jahren fuer meine Kinder gemalt. Nun schon wieder uebermalt, da sie aus diesem Alter rausgewachsen sind.

Restaurant in Ponce Inlet

Restaurant in Ponce Inlet, right across the street from the lighthouse. When I took the plein air workshop with Larry Moore (www.larrymoorestudios.com) last October, he did this view as a demo. I thought I'd give this a try today. The turquoise of the restaurant and the rose-purple of the adjacent building were very hard to match. I also had to eliminate a couple of cars that were parked right up front. 8x10, oil on masonite. $300.

Ein Restaurant in Ponce Inlet, gegenueber vom Leuchtturm. Larry Moore malte diese Szene als Demo in seinem Workshop letzten Oktober, und nun dachte ich, ich koennte es mal versuchen. Das Restaurant hat eine grelle turquoise Farbe, und es war ziemlich schwer, den genauen Ton zu treffen. Auch waren etliche Autos vor'm Restaurant geparkt, die ich alle "uebersehen" musste. 20x25cm.

New Smyrna Beach - Finished

Tada! Here is the finished painting, after improving 3 or 4 spots at home. I believe it captures the architecture and the hot morning. 8x10, oil on canvas. $300.

Und hier ist das vollendete Gemaelde, nachdem ich ein paar Stellen heute verbessert habe. Ich glaube, dass ich die Architektur und den heissen Morgen gut eingefangen habe. Oel auf Leinwand Platte, 20x25cm.

In New Smryna Beach

Every time I drive to New Smyrna Beach I tell myself I have to paint this house. Aside from the great architecture there is this wonderful bougainvillea winding itself up to the balcony, it's spectacular. Today was the day! I found a shady place in the park by the fort and finished this in about 1-1/2 hours. The sun was hiding behind clouds once in a while, making it a bit difficult. I found out that it's an apartment house now, but supposedly is one of the oldest houses in NSB, and was the home of the keeper of the fort (according to the guy who spotted me across the street and had just moved in - thanks for the info!). When I brought it home I discovered some spots that need re-finishing, so no close up of the final yet. I have to get ready for my exhibit tonight! Hope to see you on Beach Street in Daytona!

Jedes Mal wenn ich in New Smyrna Beach bin, schwoere ich mir, dieses wunderfulle Haus mit dem schoenen Bougainvillea-Busch zu malen. Heute war der grosse Tag! Waehrend ich malte, kam ein Mieter dieses Hauses vorbei und erzaehlte mir, dass dies eines der aeltesten Haueser in NSB sei, und zu dem naheliegenden Fort gehoerte. Leider kann ich noch nicht das Gemaelde in voller Ansicht zeigen, da ich entdeckt habe, dass ich einige Stellen ein bisschen verbessern muss. Ausserdem muss ich mich jetzt fuer meine Ausstellung heute abend fertigmachen! Bis bald!

Welcome Shade

Scene at Sugar Mill Gardens at 10am (forecast called for 99 degrees today, it was already about 95 then). All the lovely trees in the garden provided shade and a slight breeze. From top left: scene, underpainting, shadows, scene establishment.

Final after 1 hour of painting. The sun had shifted and it was time to pack up, since it was really hot. This time I used a cool and a warm blue, and a cool and warm yellow, since the scene was mostly shades of green, and I don't use premixed tube green. I hope I conveyed that hot feeling from this morning. 8x10, oil on masonite. $300.

Nach 1 Stunde musste ich einpacken, denn die Hitze war unertraeglich. Diesesmal benutzte ich ein warmes und kaltes Blau, und ein warmes und kaltes Gelb, da die Szene aus vielen Gruentoenen bestand. Ich mische mein eigenes Gruen, denn aus der Tube ist es zu kuenstlich. 20x25cm. Ich hoffe das Bild zeigt die Hitze dieses Morgens.

Old Marina in Port Orange

This morning I took Gunner with me for the first time! Here is my setup, 9:30am, about 90 degrees already. It's an old marina by the river that will be demolished in the near future.

Heute morgen durfte Gunner mit mir gehen. Um 9:30 Uhr war es schon ca. 30 Grad im Schatten. Dies ist ein Anlegesteg mit Hafengebaeuden, die bald demoliert werden.

Gunner got anxious and started barking in my last 5 minutes of painting. I finished quickly and drove home, where he happily enjoyed the air conditioning on his favorite spot on the couch. Wimp! 8x10, masonite. $300.

Die letzten 5 Minuten fing Gunner an, wie wild zu bellen, und ich malte schnell fertig. Daheim angekommen, raekelte er sich auf seinem Lieblingsplatz auf dem Sofa unter Air Conditioning - so ein verwoehnter Kerl! Wenigstens konnte ich das Bild zu meiner Befriedigung an Ort und Stelle fertigstellen. 20x25cm, 1 Stunde.

Morning at Halifax Drive, Port Orange

Before it got too hot, I went by the Halifax river in Port Orange and painted these Victorian-style houses from across the street under the shade of a palm tree. It was about 90 degrees at 10am, but I finished it quite quickly, as usual. It was very idyllic, very little traffic and birds fishing in the river behind me. 8x10, masonite, ultra, burnt sienna, yellow ochre and white. $300.

Bevor wir wieder 40 Grad bekamen, malte ich diese alten Viktorianischen Haeuser beim Halifax Fluss in Port Orange. Es war sehr idyllisch, im Schatten einer Palm zu malen, wenig Verkehr, heisse Sonne und einige Ibise, die im Fluss nach Futter suchten. 20x25cm, Oel, Ultramarin Blau, Gebranntes Sienna, Gelber Ocker und Weiss.

My first art exhibit June 5, 2009

On June 5 I had my first exhibit at "First Fridays" in downtown Daytona Beach. I joined about 10 other artist who exhibited in the same building, and about 20 others in the whole event. The rain kept a lot of people away, but it was a great networking success and so much fun! Thank you all for coming and supporting me! Am 5. Juni hatte ich meine erste "Auststellung" in Daytona Beach, wo ca. 30 Kuenstler in verschiedenen Gebaeuden ihre Kunstwerke ausstellten. Es machte viel Spass, und ich konnte mit vielen interessierten Besuchern ueber meine 10 Gemaelde, die ich gebracht hatte, sprechen. Naechstes mal bringe ich mehr Gemaelde. Downtown Sanford

After Gemini Springs and a  nice lunch we went to downtown Sanford and tried some urban scenes. It was so hot (90 degrees), and we were pretty tired, so these efforts are just - well, efforts. Some rooftops and a sidewalk scene. 5" x 7" on canvas panel. At 4pm we packed it up for the day. Thanks for the company, guys!

Nach Gemini Springs und einem staerkenden Mittagessen fuhren wir in die Innenstadt von Sanford und versuchten eine paar Stadtszenen in einer Hitze von ueber 30 Grad! Wir waren ziemlich geschlaucht, und dies sind halt nur kleine Studien.

Gemini Springs

On Saturday I met with fellow Central Florida artists Sharon and Dodi for a paint-out in the area. We settled on this old groundskeeper's house in Gemini Springs park. The sun was throwing wonderful shadows onto the house, and we could paint from the breezy shadows of an old oak tree. 8"x10", oil on masonite. $300.

Am Samstag traf ich mich mit zwei anderen Kuenstlern und wir malten ein altes Haus in einem wunderschoenen Park bei Sanford, Central Florida. Es war zwar sehr heiss, doch wir fanden Unterkunft im Schatten einer alten Eiche. 20cm x 25cm, Oel, wie immer.

Good Company

Same spot as "Windy River", but much hotter and no wind. A slightly different viewpoint, plus I got a better brush, a rigger, that makes the thin lines of the roping much easier to paint. The sun was great. 8"x10", limited palette of 3 colors plus white. $300.

Dieselbe Stelle wie "Windy River", doch heute war es windstill und viel heisser. Ich habe einen neuen Pinsel ausprobiert, mit dem die feinen Linien der Boote viel besser zu malen ist.

Sunny Yard

I painted my neighbors' yard while our new puppy Gunner was patiently keeping me company. He's 1 year old and we just rescued him last week from the Humane Society. He is such a good boy! I believe I used too much warm yellow in my painting, it looks more like fall than spring. But I think I captured the late afternoon sun streaming across the yard. 8"x10". (Collection of R. & L. T.)

Heute habe ich die Nachmittagssonne, die sich auf dem Vordergarten meiner Nachbarn raekelte, auf die Leinwand gebannt, waehrend unser neuer Hund "Gunner" mir Gesellschaft leistete. Er ist ein ganz braver 1-jaehriger, den wir letzte Woche vom Tierheim adoptiert hatten.

Boatyard

I found this scene at Ponce Inlet, but both times I tried it was way too windy to set up on location. So I painted this from my photos in my studio. I am showing my block-in and general progress on this one. 8"x10", oil on masonite. $300.

Szene in Ponce Inlet, konnte jedoch meine Staffelei nicht aufbauen, da es viel zu windig war. Habe sie also von meinen Photos gemalt. Die verschiedenen Schritte zeigen meine Malweise.

Aloe in pot

Just a quick one from last night, just before the sun went down. My collection of flower pots in front of a tree. I didn't include the background of the street and houses, so it's a bit empty there. 5"x7", oil on panel.

Sugar Mill Gardens

This is Sugar Mill Gardens in Port Orange, an old sugar-making mill. Since it was so sunny and warm today, I braved the storm again and did this painting in a more protected spot. There are many great oaks and huge trees around, so my easel and painting was pretty safe. 8"x10", very limited palette. $300. (Photo of location from www.dunlawtonsugarmillgardens.org)

Noch ein Gemaelde von heute! Eine historische Zucker-Muehle in Port Orange. Der Wind legte sich ein bisschen, und ich war im Park von grossen Eichen und Baeumen geschuetzt. Wieder 1 Stunde gemalt, bin sehr zufrieden damit. (Originales Photo von www.dunlawtonsugarmillgardens.org)

It's Windy!!!

It was super windy today, I couldn't even set up the easel, we had windgusts of up to 40mph. So I parked and painted in the car. This is a shrimp boat docked by the Dunlawton Bridge. 8"x10", oil on masonite, 1 hour, limited palette. $300.

Heute war es sehr stuermisch, ich konnte nicht mal meine Staffelei draussen aufbauen. Ich malte also im Auto, was ziemlich bequem ist. Ein Shrimp-Boot in Port Orange, gemalt in 1 Stunde.

Baseball Park

Got another chance to paint. I went to a baseball park and found this nice outlook/house with interesting shadows. I painted it sitting in the car again, I didn't have much time to set up the easel. It was hot, so I finished the whole thing in less than 25 minutes. I hope the fencing on the right reads correctly - hard to do with a brush! Oil on masonite, 8x10. $75.

Hatte schon wieder eine halbe Stunde Gelegenheit zum Malen - dieses Mal ein Baseball Park. Hinten rechts ist das Netz. Es war ziemlich heiss, ich malte wieder mal im Auto, da ich nicht viel Zeit zum Staffelei-Aufsetzen hatte. Bin sehr zufrieden damit.

6pm

While the sun was setting, I did this quick 8x10 this early evening sitting in the car. I liked the wires criss-crossing in the back, and the shadows across the house. $75.

Diese kleine Oel-Skizze habe ich heute abend im Auto in 30 Minuten vor Sonnenuntergang gemalt. Die Schatten an der Hauswand waren sehr interessant.

"Bauernmalerei"

I just rummaged through my photos, and discovered that I forgot to add my folk art painting. All these items are still in  my parents' home in Germany. I painted those with templates and freehand when I was 15. This is the folk art typical for the Southern German region. Birds, flowers, baskets - happiness.

At the marina

Had about an hour to kill in the afternoon, so I went to the marina in Daytona Beach, and there were just way too many boats. I decided on this one, but the sun was in and out, and then setting, so the lighting is really messed up. Also the palms are too big. Oh well, live and learn. At least I painted again - after about 1 month of no painting! Oil on masonite, 8x10. 30 mins.

Im Hafen von Daytona Beach, etwa eine halbe Stunde. Das Wetter war nicht das beste, mit und ohne Sonne, und die Palmen sind ein bisschen zu gross. Naja, wenigstens habe ich was gemalt!
