T.A.P. Teen Arts Program

Hello all,
I offered to teach one Saturday during Regina Wise's Art Is Creation T.A.P. program which runs right now for a couple of weeks.Regina has a different artist and art technique every month. I introduced about 10 middle-schoolers to the exciting world of Plein Air Painting. I started the class with a small demonstration of how the artists had to purchase pigment and then grind and bind them into usable paints, before the invention of the portable paint tube. This brought the artists outside where they could see the scenery in the correct light right in front of them and thus paint it more direct and full of light (Impressionism especially).

Ich half vor 2 Wochen in einem neuen Program aus, das die Kuenstlerin und ehemalige Kunstlehrerin Regina Wise gegruendet hat, wo jeden Monat die Schueler einen neuen Kuenstler besuchen und/oder eine neue Kunsttechnik kennenlernen. Ich fuehrte die ca. 10 Schueler (11-14 Jahre) in die Kunst des Plein Air Malens ein. Ich fing damit an, ihnen zu zeigen, wie die Kuenstler vor der Erfindung der portablen Farbtube ihre Pigmente kaufen mussten, und sie dann mit Moerser und Stoessel in ein Bindungsmittel vermischen mussten. Diese Tuben erlaubten dann die Kuenstler, ihrer Farben raus zu bringen und in der Landschaft das echte Licht malen zu koennen (Impressionismus vor allem).

After that we all took our easels outside the studio at the Artists' Workshop in New Smyrna Beach, where the class was held. Right outside the back door was a field of some shrubs and a nice palm tree. I introduced the concept that everything can be reduced to the four basic shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube and pyramid) and did a small demo of the scenery in front of us.
Nach dieser kleinen Demonstration nahmen wir unsere Staffeleien nach draussen und fanden dort gleich eine Wiese mit ein paar Bueschen und einer Palme. Ich leitete die Schuler in das Konzept ein, dass alles auf die 4 Grundformen gefuehrt werden koennen: Kugel, Zylinder, Wuerfel, und Pyramide. Dann malte ich eine kleine Demonstration der Szene.

We then had the students try their hand at the same scenery, and they seemed to really understand the principles of shapes, shading and paint application. Sandy, our volunteer, helped with all the paints and flying palettes and easels (it was getting windy at the end) while Regina and I weaved in and out with personal attention and critique. We all had fun, and the kids learned quite a bit by trying this out.
Nach dieser ersten Stunde durften die Schueler nun endlich dieselbe Szene malen, und sie verstanden auch wirklich die Konzepte von Formen, Schattierung und wie man die Farbe an die Leinwand bringt. Sandy, unsere Helferin, half mit den Farben, und fliegenden Paletten und Staffeleien, da es am Ende ziemlich windig wurde, waehrend Regina und ich den Schuelern individuell halfen. Wir hatten jedoch alle Spass und die Teens lernten auch wirklich was.
