Ich habe den Winter Park Paint Out ueberstanden! Es fing am letzten Sonntag an, mit Demonstrationen, Treffen und Information fuer uns Kuenstler, und am Montag fing ich mit den anderen 24 Kuenstlern an zu malen. Die ersten 2 Tage waren nicht so doll mit vielen Wolken und ziemlich schweren Lichtsituationen. Aber es war wenigstens schoen warm. Die letzten 3 Tage waren unmoeglich heiss (34º C!), es war wirklich brutal schwuel.
Here is a quick rundown of the week.
The first day I painted at the Polasek Museum where the Paint Out was held. They took good care of us, providing breakfast and lunch in the nearby Capen House with A/C, and a great framing station. The museum grounds are beautiful and scattered with Polasek's statues. Most of us did at least one or two paintings with the statues. Here is my first one.
Hier eine schnelle Synopsis der letzten Woche:
Am ersten Tag malte ich in den Gaerten des Polasek Museums, wo der Paintout stattfand. Wir Kuenstler wurden sehr gut verpflegt, mit taeglichem Fruehstueck und Mittagessen im naechstgelegenenen Capen House wo es schoene Klimaanlage gab, und auch eine tolle Rahmenstation, wo wir unsere fertigen Gemaelde zum Zeigen vorrichten konnten. Die Gaerten sind echt herrlich mit vielen von Polasek's Statuen. Viele von uns malten mindestens ein Gemaelde mit 'ner Statue, hier ist mein erstes.

In the afternoon I went to local Leu Gardens and painted the Butterfly Garden there with Barbara Ortiz. The winding lane leading up to the cute cottages was very picturesque, and we could talk to quite a few visitors.
Am Nachmittag ging ich mit Kuenstlerin Barbara Ortiz zum Leu Gardens und malte dort am Schmetterling Garten. Die schoene kurvige Strasse zu den suessen Huetten war zum Malen gemacht, und wir konnten mit vielen Besuchern schwaetzen.

I painted every morning and every afternoon, took my paintings home (it was one hour drive), corrected any small mistakes, and framed them there. The next morning I took them to the wet gallery where they were photographed, catalogued, put on the official website, and then hung on the wall. There were some artists who did more than 2 paintings a day! Crazy! There was some really good stuff. Amazing to see the local area captured in so many ways. Visitors were filtering in and out and chatted with us as we painted.
Ich malte jeden Morgen und jeden Nachmittag, fuhr dann die Stunde heim mit den Bildern, korrigierte etwaige Fehler, und rahmte sie dann. Am naechsten Morgen ging ich dann in die Gallery, wo sie photographiert, catalogisiert und auf die offizielle Website gebracht wurden, und dann wurden sie auf der Wand aufgehaengt. Jeder Kuenstler hatte seine eigene Wand. Es gab einige, die mehr als 2 Bilder pro Tag malten, Wahnsinn! Es ist wirklich schoen, die oertliche Umgebung durch die Augen so vieler verschiedener Kuenstler zu sehen. Besucher kamen und gingen und schwatzten mit uns waehrend wir malten.
The second day I met with fellow artist Patrick Noze on Park Avenue where we decided to paint the new peacock fountain. We were visited by the "peacock mom" who told us the moving story of its origins. Almost every artist tried to capture this famous statue. As soon as Patrick and I set up, the sprinklers came on right around us, but the groundskeeper turned them off for us right away.
Am 2. Tag traf ich mich mit Kuenstler Patrick Noze auf Park Avenue, wo wir uns entschieden, den neuen Pfauenbrunnen zu malen, was auch fast jeder Kuenstler tat. Sobald wir unsere Staffeleien schoen aufgestellt hatten, kamen die Wassersprinkler im Garten an, doch der Gaertner stellte sie alsbald fuer uns ab.

After a nice lunch I met up again with Barbara Ortiz and we drove to Kraft Azalea Gardens. Unfortunately the azaleas were done blooming, but there were great tall Cypress trees and palms. I set up right by the lake and the breeze coming off the water was quite strong. I had to tie my easel to a small tree, especially since I had decided to go with a quite large panel.
Nach einem guten Mittagessen traf ich mich wieder mit Barbara und wir fuhren zum Kraft Azaleen Garten. Leider waren die Azaleen schon fertig mit dem Bluehen, doch es gab dort riesige Zypressen und Palmen. Wir malten direkt am See, und die Briese vom Wasser her was so stark, dass ich meine Staffelei an einem Baum festbinden musste. Natuerlich malte ich auch meine groesste Leinwand dort, haha!

On Wednesday I decided to go downtown Orlando, as you all know that I like street scenes. I was so happy that I took the plunge! I set up in a quiet corner in the shade on the sidewalk, right downtown on Church/Orange Ave. Lots of people came by and chatted a bit. I started with my wild acrylic underpainting, and the resulting piece shows the excitement and liveliness of being downtown.
Am Mittwoch entschied ich mich, nach Orlando zu fahren, denn mein Lieblingsmotiv sind ja Strassenszenen. Ich was so froh darueber! Ich fand eine tolle schattige Ecke auf dem Gehsteig, genau in der Stadtmitte, wo viel Verkehr war. Ich konnt mit vielen interessanten Leuten reden. Ich fing mit meiner wilden Akryl-Untermalung an, und ich glaube, dass das fertige Bild diese Energie zeigt.

In the evening there was a great social event with hors d'oevres and champagne/wine/beer at the beautiful setting at Lake Maitland. The Winter Garden Racquet Club was right next door, and it was very well visited. I painted the scene during the late afternoon house with the sun setting, while a lot of the artists decided to wait and do the quite spectacular sunset.
Am Abend fand eine Party statt mit Haeppchen und Drinks in einer wunderschoenen Ecke am Maitland See. Der exklusive Winter Garden Racquet Club war dort, und es kamen sehr viele Leute. Ich malte die Szene am See waehrend der letzten Abendstunden, doch viele der anderen Kuenstler warteten auf den Sonnenuntergang, der wirklich wunderschoen war.

On Thursday I was excited to get back downtown Orlando, and I met up with Patrick again. We painted on the sidewalk in a nice shady spot at the intersection of Magnolia and Pine. The green building is a local art gallery. The light was great, and I was really super happy with how this one came out.
Am Donnerstag malte ich wieder mit Patrick in Orlando Stadtmitte. Wir setzten unsere Staffeleien auf einem sehr schattigen Gehsteig auf, wo wir ein tolles Gebaeude einfangen konnten. Das gruene Haus rechts ist eine oertliche Kunstgallerie, und das Licht und die Schatten waren wirklich super. Dies ist mein Lieblingsgemaelde der Woche.

This was the first day when the sun was blazing with strong humidity. After setting up on Park Avenue after lunch, I thought I was going to pass out. It was unbearable. I decided to drive home early and rest for the last full day of painting the next day.
Heute war der erste wirklich heisse und schwuele Tag, und nach dem Mittagessen war es mir fast schlecht. So fuhr ich dann heim and ruhte mich fuer den letzten Maltag morgen aus.
In the morning I went to the same spot in Orlando as the day before, but looked the other way. I could see the courthouse in the distance, and the library in the middle ground was nicely lit up. This is my resulting painting.
Am Freitag Morgen fuhr ich wieder nach Orlando, zum selben Platz wie vorher, doch schaute in die andere Richtung. Das Gebaeude links im Hintergrund ist das grosse Gerichtsgebaeude, und das gelbe Gebaeude rechts ist die Buecherei, die schoenes Licht einfing.

In the afternoon I stayed at the Museum grounds and decided to do a last small painting of the Museum/Studios. Thankfully I found a shady spot, and one of my students visited with me. We chatted with some of the visitors and enjoyed the hot afternoon together.
An meinem letzten Nachmittag blieb ich dann im Museumsgarten, und malte das Museum auf 'ne kleine Leinwand. Zum Glueck fand ich einen schattigen Platz unter einem Baum, und eine meiner Schuelerinnen blieb bei mir und schwatzte mit mir und den anderen Besuchern.

I forgot to mention that we were allowed to hang a "kickoff" painting on the very first day, as the gallery was of course still empty. I had brought my favorite plein air piece to date, that I painted in Ponce Inlet last summer. It sold the next day! I was ecstatic!
Ich vergass, dass wir am alleresten Tag ein aelteres Bild von uns aufhaengen konnten, so dass wenigstens was in der Gallerie haengte. Ich brachte mein Lieblingsgemaelde vom letzten Sommer, das ich in Ponce Inlet gemalt hatte. Es wurde schon am naechsten Tag verkauft! Ich war echt happy!

On Saturday evening we had the final gala with great food, drinks and lots of sales! It was great to mingle with the other artists and many interesting guests. There were a lot of people from Germany, it was really cool to talk with everybody.
Am Samstag Abend war dann das grosse Finale, die Gala mit tollem Essen, Drinks und vielen Verkaeufen! Es war schoen, endlich mehr relaxed mit den anderen Kuenstlern zu schwaetzen, und den Gaesten, von denen ein paar aus Deutschland waren. Es war ein toller Abend.
