Epcot, Art in the Garden 2014

This is a chain letter from most of the artists that participated in the Epcot Plein Air paintout in March 2014.

Hi guys, I thought it might be fun to post one little memory and your favorite piece you created in this thread, since we all didn't get to visit each other too much at the actual painting sites. It was so much fun meeting and painting with you all. I'll start

as usual, great fun. You all are so nice, and I love chitchatting with you. 

My favorite moment was when a 7-year old girl came up to me and told me about her painting ventures, and when her mom pulled up her artwork on her iphone to show me, I was surprised to see she actually sits outside and paints plein air (without knowing the term). She was on the balcony of their apartment and painted the fountain in the middle of the pond with exuberant colors. She was very sweet to talk to. I told her mom to keep at it and keep getting her good art supplies.

Attached is my favorite piece I created there on the last day, on the bridge from France to Great Britain. (Crossing into Spring). I did 3 larger pieces altogether.

My favorite time was when a young girl came to me wanting to learn all about painting.   I noticed her birthday pin and gave her a painting lesson as a gift explaining everything I was doing.  Her parents were so thrilled they tried to pay me.... I just laughed and said I wanted her to have something special to remember on her big day.

On the day of the rain I had my watercolors out and was doing little 5 x 7 figure studies of people walking with umbrellas.  One of them was of a man and women and a child and the woman's dress made her look a bit like Mary Poppins.  I put a straight brim hat her and she really looked like Mary.  I gave it to the real Mary Poppins the next day as she was walking to her spot to meet children.  She was very nice and thankful and I said as she left "I hope you enjoy it Mary Poppins."  At her next appointed time she stopped and handed me a note and said "thank you for my very nice painting".   "My pleasure Mary Poppins".   The note is on a shelf in my studio right now.

My most memorable experience this week end>

The children coming around are the most fun part of this event, I had an 8 year old tell me the history of pointillism. She knew more about the history of art  then I did...  she was quite nice to me when she knew she was teaching me and said " but I cannot paint like you " with this  big beautiful smile. Yes, she made the week end for me. And, YES, I did give her a small painting bookmark to take home.

Being my first time at Epcot, I was unsure as to what to expect.  I did mostly watercolor and crayon/wax/pencil  drawings to be used as studies for future larger paintings.  At the beginning of this study I was asked how I did what I did.  I was showing a family-mother, father, son--and explaining my procedure.  I said I sectioned off each colored area and filled in the colors as needed.  I just "scribbled" in the color and then used the water to spread it to create different values.  I sectioned off red and asked the son to scribble in the color;  he scribbled alright--- all over the page.  His mother about died!!  I said not to worry, I can fix it. Perhaps you can see some stray red marks and a pink cast to this drawing/watercolor.  I enjoyed my experience at Epcot (except the rainy Sat afternoon) and will be better prepared for future endeavors.

Hello All,
I have been traveling a lot this past month and Epcot was one of my
favorite destinations on the "traveling artist" road.  It has been so
wonderful to have a chance to meet all of the artists and people who
made it possible for us to take a part in the Garden Festival.

Looking back now I can't help but to smile about all of the beautiful
flowers that graced the countries and people that came through and
enjoyed the food and the festivities of the park.

I really enjoyed the time spent talking to people, answering their
questions and listening to their stories.  It is so rewarding to know
that what you do is appreciated and even inspiring to some.

One of my favorite visitors was a girl, probably around 10 years old,
with her mother who chatted with me right up to the beginning of the
storm we had.  The little girl has set her mind on being an architect
and was telling me all about the style of the buildings in Canada.
She named them as Chateaux and Gothic Revival and also explained to me
all about the Haida houses and villages.  In the end she picked up a
few paintings of the buildings I did and she complimented me on
capturing their style.  I was thrilled to hear this from such an
educated and bright young lady.

I was grateful to have a chance to connect with someone so young that
shared my interests in architecture and art.

Hi everybody, I have such good memories of this year's paint out. It was great to see
everyone. One of my favorite moments was an 11 year old boy with his family from
Michigan who loved art and drew constantly. For a half an hour we discussed our interest
in art. I mentioned to him when I was his age I drew so much and held onto the pencil so
tight I would get calluses on my index finger. He said he gets that too and showed me the
bump on his index finger. It's an artist thing I said. He was a wonderful boy, I wish him all
the joy drawing can bring.

Life has been one very difficult episode after another since my return home. If only i could live at Epcot and paint all the time, stay at the hotel we were privileged to stay in, eat the delicious foods prepared for us and do my favorite thing, paint all day. I felt like Cinderella returning to reality from the castle.  

As a newby, everything about the entire event was spectacular. Yes even the storm - we got to eat more food and get to know each other better!!!  

Talking to all the children was very special indeed but one situation really topped it off for me. One of my dear friend's daughter was celebrating her 25th birthday at Epcot and she came by to see me. It was a very special time because she had art scholarships from high school and did't do much with them.  She was so excited to see what I do and I spent some good quality time encouraging her to get back to her art career.   I think she will follow through with this. Hopefully so!!!

Thanks for being patient. The story that stuck out from my three days happened on the first day. I was painting the cart with the donkey in Italy, it's a gelato stand I think, when a family with a son and a daughter came up to look. They asked if they could look, and of course I agreed. It became apparent quickly that the mother was either an artist or an art teacher because she was describing in detail to her daughter exactly my approach to the painting. The cool thing was the daughter was following along, and knew what her Mom was talking about. We chatted for a few minutes and I asked the girl liked to draw and paint, and she said "everything". It's nice to know there are still parents willing to give a kid the gift of art. I have to say the kids are all very enthused when they get to look at what you are doing. It really is a privilege to paint in front of them because they are genuinely fascinated with the process.

Good Morning Ruth,
Sorry this took so long to get to you. It has been crazy busy here. But here goes......I love coming to Epcot because of the kids. Their smiles, and enthusiasm are contagious. Painting with all of you also ranks right up there. I sold a piece to a family who told me the day before they would come back because they had dinner reservations that night . I was very pleased to see that the next day they did come back. They bought the piece for their daughter who was about 10. I had a little 2 x 2 inch canvas and told her she could paint a little piece for her very own also. I let her use my paints and explained plein air and oil paints. 

I got a big smile in return .....it was great!

Greetings to my fellow plein air expatriates! I must say that this event was a Magical time! As one of my plein air instructors expressed to me with exuberance over three decades ago, "your not just experiencing the subject your painting, your experiencing Everything around you, and it will come out in your painting"! This quote was as true as ever as I was enjoying the atmosphere of Epcot, especially after months of painting in Solitude in the mountains with four foot of snow on the ground!

I loved being around fellow artists and I greatly enjoyed painting at Epcot and visiting with all the people that liked to watch and visit while I painted. I had several families with children that stopped to watch and I would ask the kids if they painted. Many said they did and some said they didn't but one day wanted to paint! On many occasions I would show them how to hold a brush and let them paint some flowers on the canvas. Needless to say they were thrilled!

The United Kingdom was as great place to paint! Besides being a pretty place to paint the British band would play several times a day and Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins would stop by to see my progress! How many plein air painters can say they had a visit from Alice or Mary Poppins while they painted!

Epcot 2014, more painting stuff

Me again!
I photographed the large knife painting, see below. Unfortunately the colors are a bit off, and you can't really see the thick texture, so I'm showing a small detail of it.
Ich nochmal, unten mein beendetes Gemaelde mit dem Palettenmesser (Spachtel). Leider sind die Farben im fertigen Photo nicht korrect, das Detail links ist die richtige Farbe und zeigt die dicke Farbe.

Usual steps in creating my paintings:

Top: Underpainting in burnt sienna. I rather use values than lines. This makes the process quicker because it's easier to judge if all placement is correct and the darks and lights are playing well off each other.

Middle: Starting with color, pretty much overall development. Establishing the direction of the sun right away and the strongest shadows, as those make or break a painting.

Bottom: Final piece. The sun had moved considerably by this time, but I did not need to worry, because of my accurate underdrawing.

Obig mein normaler Mal-Prozess mit dem Pinsel, was viel effektiver und einfacher ist, und auch wirklich das Licht einfangen laesst.

Epcot March 2014

Hello everybody
I can't believe it's been almost 5 months since my last painting! I had been invited to paint at Epcot again for their Art In The Garden portion of the Flower and Garden Festival. Many of the other 15 artists from last year participated again and it was nice to chitchat with them after so long.

Es ist kaum zu glauben, aber es ist schon 5 Monate seit meinem letzten Plein Air Gemaelde! Ich war wieder in Epcot eingeladen zum Art In the Garden beim Flower and Garden Festival. Viele der 16 Kuenstler kannte ich von anderen Events und auch von letztem Jahr.

I was stationed in France this time, and had decided to paint fewer, but larger pieces. Altogether I did one per day, two at 11x14, and one at 16x20 with a knife which was very long-winded and exhausting. I won't do that again. When you paint with the palette knife, the colors stay pure and you get lots of texture, but you also can't develop the painting all over, you need to do it section by section, which is not my preferred method. By the time I was halfway done with the knife painting I hated it - but I stuck to it!
Diesesmal war ich in Frankreich, und entschied mich, weniger, aber groessere Gemaelde zu malen. Ich malte zwei in der Groesse 27cm x 35cm, und eines 40cm x 50cm, mit dem Palettenmesser, was ich jedoch nie wieder machen werde, denn es dauerte ewig, war total gegen meine normale Malweise, und kam viel zu schmalzig heraus.

This year my kids could visit with me, and they also had a good time riding the rides and seeing firsthand what happens on a paintout.

Dieses Jahr konnten endlich mal meine Kinder auch alles hautnah miterleben, und neben den Fahrten auch sehen, was ich da immer an diesen Events mache.

The weather was good on Friday, miserable on Saturday (we got rained out with storm and tornado warnings for most of the afternoon, and had to go back chilly and wet from the rain), and absolutely gorgeous on Sunday. So we had pretty much everything.
Lots of nice people again and great conversations with the other artists during lunch and with the Epcot visitors.
Das Wetter am Freitag war okay, total miserabel am Samstag mit Regen und Tornado Warnung am Mittag, und dann absolut toll und herrlich und sonnig am Sonntag. Also ziemlich alles wurde angeboten. Wir trafen wieder viele nette Leute und hatten schoene Small Talks mit den anderen Kuenstlern und den Epcot Besuchern.

Below is me with the heavy handed knife painting, my second ever largest painting at 16"x20"! It took me 2 afternoons. It was quite detailed, and got lots of comments, but I definitely prefer the brush! I will post that one when I get it in a better light this week.

Unten bin ich am Malen mit dem Palettenmesser, eines meiner groessten Gemaelde draussen, dauerte 2 Nachmittage, um es fertigzustellen. Es brachte viele positive Kommentare, aber ich bevorzuge auf jeden Fall die Pinsel! Ich werde es diese Woche photographieren und dann postieren.

Painting during Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!
Alles Gute zu Thanksgiving (war letzte Woche)
We took our family to visit Austin's sister's family in Georgia, close to Atlanta. The weather was the coldest for this time of year in 100 years there! Thankfully it warmed up to about 55°F with sunshine during the day, and while everybody cooked and played and watched the parade, I spent a couple of hours in the front yard, painting their house as a Christmas gift.
Wir fuhren mit allen Kindern zu Austin's Schwester's Familie in Georgia, wo sie bei Atlanta wohnt. Das Wetter dort war das kaelteste in ueber 100 Jahren fuer die Jahreszeit! Zum Glueck waermte es sich auf so ca. 15°C mit herrlichem Sonnenschein auf, und waehrend jeder kochte, spielt, und die Macy's Parade anschaute am TV, verbrachte ich einige Stunden draussen im Vorgarten, um ihr Haus als Weihnachtsgeschenk zu malen.

These are my usual steps, drawing with burnt sienna on toned ground, setting the lights, adding color, and details at the finish with my palette knife.
Meine normalen Schritte, erst duenne Untermalung/Zeichnung auf getoentem Grund, dann die Highlights, dann die Farben, und am Schluss Details mit dem Palettenmesser.

This was my biggest canvas done plein air ever - 20"x16"! My self-made pochade box did great and held it wonderfully and without trouble, see final at scene below.

Dies war meine groesste Leinwand, die ich je draussen in Plein Air benutzte - 51cm x 41cm! Hat jedoch Spass gemacht und meine selbstgebaute Staffelei hielt alles gut zusammen.

It was fun and everybody took a peek every once in a while, and getting me hot tea and chatting with me. Especially the kids were very interested.

Es machte viel Spass und jeder kam mal raus, um den Fortschritt zu sehen, mir heissen Tee zu bringen, oder mit mir zu schwaetzen. Vor allem die Kinder waren sehr interessiert an dem ganzen.

ANNUAL AUTUMN IN THE OAKS ART, MUSIC AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL

Yesterday I participated in the first annual arts festival in the charming little town of Deleon Springs here in the area. I have to say they are the nicest community with the nicest people. It seemed like everybody was present, milling around and chatting with each other. They had pony rides, food trucks, arts and crafts, and a Ponce DeLeon lookalike contest with lots of bearded participants in colorful vests and leather boots. The weather couldn't have been better and the shady areas were welcomed.

Gestern nahm ich im ersten jaehrlichen Herbst Fest im suessen Dorf von Deleon Springs teil. Eine tolle Gemeindschaft und nette Leute! Es schien, als ob jeder Einwohner dort war. Es gab Ponyreiten, verschiedene Gelegenheiten zum Essen, eine Kunst und Hobby Ausstellung, und ein Kostuem-Wettbewerb. Das Wetter war so schoen, und die Oertlichkeit mit den hohen Eichen ganz toll und malerisch.

I set myself up right in front at the historic Porter House and painted a side view with the sunlight streaming in from the top left. This way I was able to greet people just coming in from parking, and chatted with a lot of them.

Ich setzte meine Staffelei im Vorgarten des alten Porter Hauses auf und malte die Seite, die von der Sonne schraeg beschienen wurde. So war ich gleich vorne dort und konnte alle Besucher begruessen und mit ihnen schwatzen.

I started in my usual style with a burnt sienna underpainting and midway through really ramped up the very sunny feeling of the scene. I was very happy with the painting, and sold it to the organization right off the easel. They told me it will hang in the Porter House. That made my day.

Ich fing mein Gemaelde wie ueblich an, und fing die Sonne schoen ein, finde ich. Die Organisation kaufte das Bild gleich weg von der Staffelei, wo es dann spaeter im Porter Haus haengen wird. Das fande ich ganz toll.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout4

On Friday I went to the marina at the North Causeway and found a nice boat with a cool old building behind it. I went with the lighter colors again, and even more geometric brush application. Halfway thru the painting Austin surprised me with his presence, some beer and music. We both enjoyed the quiet at the marina together while I finished the painting.
Am Freitag malte ich am Hafen in New Smyrna Beach, wo ich ein schoenes Boot mit einem tollen alten Gebaeude im Hintergrund fand. Ich malte sehr geometrisch mit den klaren hellen Farben. Als ich halbwegs fertig war, kam ueberraschenderweise Austin vorbei mit Musik und Bier, und wir konnten beide die friedliche Szene geniessen, waehrend ich fertigmalte.

We went together to the wet room where I hung this last painting. I included some from last year.
Zusammen hingen wir dieses letzte Gemaelde an meine Wand in der Galerie, wo ich auch ein paar vom letzten Jahr ausgestellt hatte.

Saturday evening was the culmination of the week, with patrons getting first dibs in the first private hour of viewing, and then the rest of the public could view and buy.

Am Samstag Abend war die letzte offizielle Ausstellung, wo die VIP Sponsoren erste Wahl hatten, und danach das lokale Publikum auch schauen und kaufen konnte.

Patron Anne Vogt bought my marsh scene from last year, a hard decision made a bit easier for her by her niece. She happily posed with me.

Eine der Sponsoren kaufte eine Sumpf-Szene vom letzten Jahr, wobei ihr ihre Nichte bei der Wahl half. Sie war total gluecklich mit ihrem Kauf, siehe unten.

The event was very successful, with lots of art being sold, and many visitors. As I was taking down my paintings for the night, Nancy Malmberg bought the one I did earlier in the week for her husband's birthday. My night was complete. I had never had so much success, and fun, and I am definitely looking forward to next year.
Die Ausstellung war sehr erfolgreich, mit vielen Kauefen und vielen Besuchern. Als ich am Ende der Nacht meine Bilder zum Auto brachte, kam eine der Organisateuren auf mich zu und kaufte ein Bild dieser Woche fuer ihren Mann zum Geburtstag. Ich was so happy mit dieser Woche, soviel habe ich noch nie verkauft (im ersten Jahr nichts, und letztes Jahr eines, und nun 4!)

Canaveral Seashore Paintout Part3

One day was spent on Flagler Ave, and I painted with new artist Kathleen Denis, whose color is just awesome! I found an alley right next to her, where she painted a commission, and due to her pure colors I wanted to try something really light and bright. See below.

Am naechsten Tag waren wir auf der malerischen Flagler Avenue, wo ich mit Kathleen Denis malte, die eine tolle helle farbliche Palette benutzt, und mich dazu angeregt hat, auch mal was in viel helleren Toenen zu malen.

In the evening we all met at JB's Fishcamp by the beach, where we all painted in and around the restaurant, and after sunset paintings were auctioned off. It was great fun, and one of mine (the one above, still wet) was sold. I was so excited!

Am Abend malten wir alle wie jedes Jahr bei JB's Fishcamp, was ne tolle Gaudi ist, und nach dem Sonnenuntergang wurden etliche Gemaelde auktioniert, wobei ich auch eines (das obige Flagler Light) verkaufen konnte. Das machte mich wirklich happy!

Even my kids could finally see one of the paintouts and meet my artist friends and view the excitement.

Dieses Jahr konnten endlich mal meine Kinder vorbeischauen und sehen, was an so 'nem Paintout losgeht.

My "other German mom" Irene, who paints with me a lot. She viewed almost every demo and had as much fun as all of us.

Meine "andere deutsche Mutter" Irene, mit der ich oefters male, und die fast jede Demo angeschaut hatte.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout Part2

The next week we all painted around town, with 2 demos each day. We had about 6 new artists this year, and everybody wants to do a demo, so the selection process is quite competitive. I did not get to do one, even though I really enjoy doing it.
Waehrend der Woche malten wir alle in der Umgebung von New Smyrna Beach, mit 2 Demonstrations-gemaelden jeden Tag. Jeder will so eine Demo machen, doch da wir 6 neue Kuenstler hatten, konnte ich dieses Jahr nichts demonstrieren, was mir doch viel Spass macht.

For my second painting I joined a small group that was gathered in Christmas Park in NSB around Linda Holmes, who was doing a demo of the cool clock tower that I had already done twice. I looked west and found a really cool alleyway with lots of wires and old buildings. Even though clouds moved in like crazy, I could catch the shadows and make it a sunny painting.
Fuer mein 2. Gemaelde setzte ich meine Staffelei in der Naehe von Linda Holmes auf, die im Christmas Park ihre Demo hatte. Ich fand diese tolle Gasse mit vielen Telephonkabeln und alten Gebaeuden, und obwohl viele Wolken aufzogen, konnte ich die Schatten gerade noch einfangen.

In the evening we had our gathering at the Arts On Douglas Gallery, where everybody displayed one painting of the week, and met the public with wine and cheese. It was really a great event, as usual, and my fiance Austin was able to join me.

Am Abend hatten wir einen Empfang in einer Galerie, wo jeder ein Bild ausstellen konnte, und dann mit Wein und tollem Kaese mit den Besuchern und Kuenstlern quatschen konnte. Wie immer war das ein tolles Ereignis, vor allem da auch mein Verlobter Austin mitkommen konnte.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout 2013 Part1

Hello everybody!

The Annual Canaveral Seashore Paintout was going on this past week, but due to the government shutdown we could not paint in the park as usual, but relocated most of the events into New Smyrna Beach. I, being more of an urban painter, welcomed this wholeheartedly, but still I feel bad for all the reorganization that had to take place and all the government employees that are affected.

Wir hatten den Canaveral Seashore Paintout letzte Woche, doch da unsere Regierung sich nicht wie Erwachsene benehmen kann, wurde der Park geschlossen und die meisten Festivitaeten wurden in die Kleinstadt New Smyrna Beach verlegt, was mir natuerlich sehr gefiel, da ich ja lieber Architektur male.

The week started at the Clay Gallery in NSB last Saturday where the public could meet most of the artists. We were all painting in the idyllic garden setting of this charming gallery and I painted the "surfer van" VW of fellow artist Elisabeth Ferber, who promptly bought it right off the easel! So the event started out great for me.

Die Woche fing letzten Samstag in der malerischen Clay Galerie in New Smyrna Beach an, wo die Lokalen die Maler kennenlernen konnte, da wir uns alle im Garten verbreiteten und malten. Ich fing an, den alten Bus (VW Westfalia von 1980 mit Surfboards obendrauf) einer Mal-Kollegin zu malen, und als ich fertig war, kaufte sie prompt das Gemaelde, gleich von der Staffelei runter. Das war ein toller Anfang fuer eine tolle Woche fuer mich.

World-Wide Paintout Sept 15, 2013

Hello everybody again.

It seems that fall is finally here for the rest of the world, except for us. I participated in the World Wide Paint Out event last Sunday, Sept. 15. Hallihallo! Es scheint, dass der Herbst endlich eingewandert ist, ausser bei uns. Letzten Sonntag nahm ich am "Weltweiten Malfest" teil, siehe website in den links oben.

The location for our area was the boardwalk in Daytona Beach on the beach. I got there at around 10am, and it was blazing hot. Although I had to be in the full sun all during painting, I selected the old arcade at the boardwalk which had always caught my eye in the past 20 years I have lived here. I love the colorful funky jesters sitting on the fassade of the building, and I positioned myself next to Randy Pitts who was painting a surfer, looking in the other direction.

Unsere gewaehlte Stelle war der Boardwalk in Daytona Beach, und Mann, war es heiss! Ich waehlte eine Szene, fuer die ich die ganze Zeit in der prallen Sonne stehen musste, doch ich hatte sie schon fuer fast 20 Jahre im Auge. Ich fand die komischen farbenfreuen Clowns an der Fassade ganz suess und genau, was ich mal-bar finde.

I met some of the other painters there, but after being in direct sun for almost 3 hours I had enough. I think I will finish it at home.

Unfortunately - and I know this! - it really is bad to have your painting in the sun, because as I brought it home it looked much darker than when I worked on it in the sunlight. I might have to lighten some areas when I finish it, but that's no big problem. I am very satisfied with the painting, I approached it a bit differently than usual: I painted directly top to bottom, without laying out the shadows in my thin wash. And I actually got the proportions right. Man, I just LOVE architecture! ;-)

Nach 3 Stunden war mir die Sonne zu viel und ich verabschiedete mich von den anderen 4-5 Malern. Leider lernte ich nun selber, dass man nie in voller Sonne malen soll, denn das Bild war daheim viel dunkler, als ich dachte. Ich muss jedoch noch eine Stunde oder so  damit verbringen, unten alles zu vollenden, und werde dann ein paar Stellen aufhellen koennen. Das werde ich dann zeigen, wenn ich fertig bin.

Now that it's cooler, all the events and festivals are starting up, and I promise I will post more.

Nun kommen alle anderen Kunstfeste, und ich kann endlich mehr postieren, bis dann!
