On the second day of the workshop we went to the dock that is off US1 between Port Orange and NSB. It was quite hot already, and we cramped under the small cover at the end, because the rest of the dock was taken up by a large boy scout group fishing and canoeing. But our presence injected a little of culture, so their leaders were fine with it ;-)
Am zweiten Workshop-Tag gingen wir zu einem Anlegesteg des grossen Spruce Creeks. Es war ziemlich heiss und wir suchten alle Schutz unter einem ueberdachten Ende, waehrend am anderen Ende eine Boy Scout Truppe angelte und Kanu fuhr.
I tried to put my students under some time constraint, and by the time we were hungry for lunch, I told them to just finish their almost done paintings at home, because I wanted to do another quick demo and get them started on another one. The first drawing and how to select a scene in the first place are very crucial and set the tone for success or failure, and I wanted to make another point for my emphasis on values rather than detail and color.
Ich versuchte, meine Schueler unter Zeitdruck zu setzen, und als wir mit dem schnellen Mittagessen fertig waren, erklaerte ich, dass sie die fast fertigen Bilder von heute morgen daheim fertigstellen sollten, da ich noch eine kleine Demo zeigen wollte, und sie noch ein anderes Bild anfangen koennten. Es ist wichtig, ein Gemaelde richtig anzufangen, und die Szene und Komposition gut zu ueberlegen, und ich wollte auch nochmal zeigen, wie man sich eher auf Form und Schattierung konzentrieren soll, anstatt auf Detail und Farbe.
I did not demo any painting at the dock, just took a couple of minutes to do a little one (see above). They were all surprised how hard it was to do a simple marsh scene that consists of simply water and some little grassy islands with a big sky, because this is the kind of scene that is very attractive to everybody and I believe every painter has attempted a similar scene sometime in their life.
Das obige Gemaelde von mir war keine Demo, ich hatte eigentlich nicht viel Zeit dafuer, da diese Marschland Szene die Schueler ueberraschte mit ihrer Schwierigkeit. Dies ist naemlich so eine typische malerische Szene, die jeder einfangen will, jedoch sehr schwer zu malen ist.
After lunch we went to Sugar Mill Ruins in NSB, where the subject matter was more to my liking: architecture! We all settled on one viewpoint and I started a scene of the ruins with their arches, the big kettles and some palm trees. My painting below is just a start of the underpainting in 3 values and a touch of color to start. I again wanted to illustrate how getting the values correct is more important than color or details.
Nach dem Mittagessen gingen wir zu einer alten Ruine einer Zucker"fabrik" in New Smyrna Beach, was mir natuerlich viel besser gefiel: Architektur! Wir einigten uns alle auf diesen Blickwinkel, und ich malte schnell die Komposition in Braun mit wenig Farbe, um den Schuelern zu zeigen, wie ein einfarbiges Bild wirken kann, solange man die Schatten und Lichtspiele korrekt einfaengt.
Everybody was trying their hand at this scene, which again proved to be very difficult, especially since we had to move after about two hours because someone had a wedding there in the late afternoon. It had been a quite exhausting day anyway, and we had two good starts for the day, that everybody was eager to finish later at home.
Jeder versuchte seine Hand daran, was sie sehr schwierig fanden. Wir mussten dann auch nach ca. 2 Stunden einpacken, da eine Hochzeit auf dem Gelaende stattfinden sollte. Es war sowieso Zeit zum gehen, jeder war muede, aber auch gluecklich mit den Erfolgen und den Startbildern, die sie daheim beenden wollen.
I had a great experience with this first workshop and everybody said they liked my teaching and guidance. I am looking forward to maybe doing more of these.
Ich persoenlich hatte auch viel Spass mit diesem meinem ersten Workshop, und jeder sagte mir, wie toll ich alles gelehrt und erklaert hatte. Ich hoffe, ich kann das nun oefters machen.
