The Estate on the Halifax

So, yesterday one of our painters, who lives right next door to the most romantic 10 acres in the area, arranged for us to paint there. It's the Estate on the Halifax, where you can have events and weddings. There are so many things to see: gardens, statues, little bridges over koi ponds, a small English cottage for gnomes, a gazebo, and many more awesome little scenes. We were all wandering around for half an hour just taking pictures and wondering what to select for that day's painting.
Okay, gestern malten wir in einem wunderschoenen privaten Park, Estate on the Halifax, wo man Feste und Hochzeiten feiern kann. Es war sehr malerisch, und um jede Ecke 'rum konnte man was anderes bewundern: Gaerten, Statuen, kleine Bruecken ueber Fischteiche, ein kleines Englisches Haeuschen fuer Gartenzwerge, ein Gazebo, und, und, und... Wir wanderten ewig herum, schossen Photos, und fragten uns, welche tolle Szene wir als erstes waehlen wollten.

I finally settled on the walkway that leads to the gazebo. I am sure many a bride have walked towards their groom there. The light was fantastic, and I could paint in the shade. What more could I wish for!
Ich entschied mich endlich fuer den Pfad, der zum Gazebo fuehrt. Ich bin mir sicher, dass viele Braeute dort auf ihren Braeutigam zugegangen sind zu Wagner's Musik. Das Licht war toll, und ich konnte von einem schattigen Platz aus malen. Da war nicht mehr zu wuenschen uebrig!

As you can see in the process pictures, I started on a panel that was toned in bright yellow. It worked out really good, and I think I will tone my canvases in bright yellow and cool magenta from now on, ditching the usual warm burnt sienna.
Wie ihr sehen koennt von den obigen Bildern, fing ich diesmal auf einer Leinwand an, die ich in Gelb getoent hatte. Ich glaube, dass ich von nun an immer auf einem helleren und kuehleren Grund anfangen werde, anstatt meinem ueblichen warmen Rotbraun Ton. Sieht viel besser aus.

I actually finished this one in a little over an hour, the paint just flowed onto my canvas, so I decided to start another one.
Ich malte dieses kleine in einer knappen Stunde, die Farbe fliess einfach auf meine Leinwand, so ging ich halt auf Suche nach einer zweiten Szene.

This is an archway leading to the English cottage, beyond the opening is a tiny brick bridge over a koi pond. The plant arcing over the structure is a bougainvilla and we can't wait to get back there when it's in bloom. It must be a veil of magenta blooms framing this romantic arch. What an entrance for a bride - I can just imagine.
Dies ist ein Bogen, der zu dem kleinen englischen Haeuschen fuehrt, was man nicht sieht, ist eine klitzekleine Bruecke, die ueber einen Fischteich mit Koi Fischen fuehrt, und die Planzen, die sich um den Bogen ranken, sind Bougainvilla. Das muss einfach spektulaer aussehen, wenn alles in Rosa blueht, und eine Braut durchschreitet! Vielleicht koennen wir es wieder im Fruehling malen...

I am going to just tease you with the beginning steps. We are allowed to come back next week, where I hope to finish this and do one or two more in this fantastic setting. Will post that again once it's done.
Ich werde euch nun auf Spannung halten mit meinen ersten Pinselstrichen dieses Gemaeldes. Da wir ja naechste Woche wieder dort malen duerfen, hoffe ich, es dann fertigzustellen und noch ein drittes Gemaelde dort zu malen. Bis spaeter dann...

Plein Air in Port Orange

Hello again,
it's fun to paint with other artists, I joined the East Coast Plein Air Group from NSB again last week and today. What fun!

es ist so schoen, mit anderen Kuenstlern zu malen. Ich ging wieder mit der East Coast Plein Air Gruppe aus, soviel Spass!

Last week we met at the Sugar Mill Gardens in Port Orange on Herbert Street. It's a nice garden that I haven't been to in years, and the plants have really grown like crazy. They spread across the scenic pathways and take over the majestic oaks and palm trees. It's a very scenic area and free to visit and stroll around.
Letzte Woche trafen wir uns im Sugar Mill Gardens in Port Orange. Ich war schon ewig nicht mehr dort, und die Fauna ist wirklich doll gewachsen. Sehr schoene Szenen, sehr malerisch.

I painted the little garden house that I painted about 5 years ago, from exactly the same spot. I wanted to see how differently I go at a scene now.
Here is my final painting from this year, done in about 2 hours. (It was blazing hot and humid early in the morning, but then comfortable as the sun came up and sucked up the humidity).
Ich malte wieder das kleine Gartenhaus, das ich vor 5 Jahren von demselben Platz gemalt hatte. Ich wollte sehen, wie verschieden nun meine Malweise ist.
Hier ist mein Gemaelde von diesem Jahr, in etwa 2 Stunden gemalt (es war sehr heiss und schwuel, vor allem am Morgen).

I started with a magenta-toned canvas, and painted in very cool colors, especially the little house. I am more confident with trees, as you can see in the background. It's still challenging to paint a large oak tree and not make the limbs look like alien arms. I need to practice more foliage!

Ich fing auf einer rosa Leinwand an, und malte dann in kuehleren Farben, vor allem das kleine Haus. Ich werde immer besser mit meinen Baeumen, vor allem, wenn sie im Hintergrund sind. Grosse Eichen sehen immer noch etwas gespenstig mit Riesenarmen aus, ich muss noch mehr ueben!

As you can see, I did not have a toned canvas, but started on white. The lights and shadows are very harsh, but you can definitely feel the sun. I definitely didn't like painting trees and bushes back then...
Und hier ist das Gemaelde vom Juni 2009 mit meinen Schritten. Die hellen und dunklen Stellen sind sehr krass, aber man kann auf jeden Fall die Sonne spueren. Man sieht, dass ich nicht sehr komfortabel mit Baeumen war...

Then I fixed the painting from the New Smyrna Causeway from the previous week, someone reading my blog suggested to add the lamp posts, which I did, and it was a great idea (thanks Pat!).
Und dann malte ich ein bisschen mehr an dem Gemaelde von der vorigen Woche, dank einem Kommentar von einer Lesering fuegte ich die 2 Lampen hinzu. Sieht nun echt gut aus.

The Ark - Commission

Yesterday I delivered my largest commission to date to my client. He was very happy.
Being a financial adviser he liked the picture of the ark as it is now imagined to have been. It shows stability and solidity in an unsure world of (financial) storms and trials. I painted from a photo he found on the internet, unfortunately I have been unable to find the original artist and cannot give credit (see below).
Gestern habe ich meine groesste Komission abgeliefert. Mein Kunde war sehr zufrieden.
Da er ein finanzieller Berater ist, mag er das Symbol der Arche, wie man sich das Boot heutzutage richtig vorstellt. Es zeigt Stabilitaet und festen Grund in einer unsicheren Welt von (finanziellen) Stuermen und Versuchungen. I malte es von einem Photo vom Internet, doch leider konnte ich den originalen Kuenstler nicht ausfinden, um Kredit zu geben.

I started this painting with many different items that not only represented his professional life (copies of money, charts from the Wall Street Journal, maps of the area where he works, etc), but also his personal life (kids, education, travel, etc.), that I glued onto the cradled wood panel. It was huge in my small studio - almost 3 feet by 4 feet!
Ich fing dieses Gemaelde mit verschiedenen Dingen an, die nicht nur das berufliche Leben des Kundens vorstellte (Geld, Ausschnitte von finanziellen Zeitungen, Landkarten, etc), sondern auch sein Privatleben (Kinder, Ehe, Ausbildung, Reisen, etc). Diese wurden auf die sehr grosse Holzplatte geklebt (76cm x 100cm)!

After the collage was done and dry, I started the drawing of the main items (the large boat and the passing storm cloud) with charcoal, and then glazed over with many transparent layers of black, golden yellow and burnt sienna. It was fun to see how the scene came together.

Nachdem die Collage fertig und trocken war, fing ich an, die grossen Elemente - das Boot und die Sturmwolke - mit Holzkohle zu zeichnen, und dann mit vielen Lasurschichten drueberzumalen, bis die Szene in schwarz, goldgelb und braun schoen zusammen kam.

After having looked at the painting for several days I decided to make the light stronger by adding goldleaf to the sun breaking out behind the clouds. I did this as a round glow, some rays streaming down, and some reflections off the side of the ark. Goldleaf is so nice because it changes its appearance and color when you view it from different angles and it adds a richness to the final painting.

Nachdem ich das Gemaelde fuer einige Tag sitzenliess und immer kurz anschaute, entschied ich mich, das Licht strahlender zu machen, indem ich mit Goldblatt die Sonne hinter den Wolken ausbrechen liess. Es sieht nun aus wie ein toller Schein rechts neben der Wolke, und auch einige Strahlen, die durch die Wolke brechen und sich dann an der Seite der Arche reflektieren. Ich benutze nun oefters Goldblatt in meinen Collagen, da es immer anders aussieht, je nachdem, von welcher Richtung aus man es betrachtet.

The final painting. You can still see the many items coming through the layers of paint, some more than others, but it definitely adds a whole lot of meaning, and is only visible and detectable after close viewing.

Das fertige Gemaelde. Man kann die verschiedenen Dinge durch die Farbschichten erkennen, manche mehr als andere, aber das fuegt viel mehr Bedeutung dazu und macht das Gemaelde noch viel interessanter, je laenger und intensiver man es anschaut.

New Smyrna - Under The Bridge

Yesterday I joined the East Coast Plein Air group to paint under the South Causeway in New Smyrna Beach. Even though it was blazing hot, even in the morning, it was comfortable, shady and breezy under the bridge. Lots of people were fishing, many boats were sitting on the glassy Halifax River, and everything was peaceful.
Gestern malte ich mit einer oertlichen Plein Air Gruppe in New Smyrna Beach, unter der suedlichen Bruecke. Obwohl es sehr heiss war, selbst so frueh am Morgen, war es unter der Bruecke sehr angenehm, mit Schatten und 'ner Briese. Es waren viele Angler auf dem Holzweg unter der Bruecke, und viele Boote sassen draussen auf dem Halifax Fluss, und es war total friedlich.

I selected the view from the bend of the walkway I was standing on, to a group of houses across Riverside Drive. The sun was out and a few puffy clouds. I was standing next to a British-born watercolorist who painted the boats out on the water. See photo above, it is always astounding how boring and mundane a scene looks in the reference photo, and how lively it was in real life and now on my canvas - with artistic interpretation...
Ich waehlte den Blick um die Kurve rum von wo ich stand, zu einer Gruppe von Haeusern, die ueber die Strasse weg sassen. Die Sonne schien und wir hatten schoene Baumwoll-Wolken. Ich stand neben einem britischen Aquarell-Maler, der die Boote malte. Siehe obiges Photo: ich finde es immer faszinierend, wie langweilig und einfach eine Szene auf dem Photo aussieht, und wie lebending und interessant es wirklich war, und dann auf meiner Leinwand, mit meiner Interpretation...

NYC and Dog Commission

Hello again!
I finished the NYC painting that I talked about a while ago. I put some really cool items into the background from our recent trip to NYC, but unfortunately I went a bit wild with the colors and it's hard to find these items: our Metro Card, metro map, the pamphlet of the Broadway show we saw, some museum directories. Oh well, but at least I do know they're there on the bottom layer.

Ich habe das New York City Gemaelde fertiggestellt, von dem ich vor einigen Wochen gesprochen hatte. Ich fing mit der Collage an, die viele Dinge von unserem letzten Trip zu NYC beinhaltete, doch leider wurde das Gemaelde drueber dunkler und dunkler, und man kann die Sachen fast nicht sehen: unsere MetroKarte, die Metro Strassenkarte, ein Heftchen der Broadway Show, die wir sahen, und einige Heftchen von Museen. Nun ja, wenigstens weiss ICH, dass unsere Souveniere dort drunter sind.

Then I just finished a commissioned painting of a German Shepherd named Jenny that passed away and is dearly missed by her owner. In this one I also put a whole bunch of items in the background collage, that signify an event or hobby or memento of the owner and his beloved dog.
Dann malte ich eine Kommission fuer einen Freund, dessen Deutscher Schaeferhund namens Jenny gestorben ist. Auch in diesem Gemaelde fuegte ich ein Haufen Sachen dazu, die dem Besitzer viel bedeuteten, und auch ein kleine Gedicht oben links.

Another Gouache painting!

Sunday morning I was enjoying the sunshine on the front porch and because Austin was making an elaborate breakfast as usual, I spent 45 minutes doing another gouache painting of the view across the street. The sun was raking across my neighbors' yards and it looked very peaceful. I intend to do a couple more around the neighborhood...

Am Sonntagmorgen genoss ich die Sonne bei unserer Eingangstuer, und da Austin ein grosses Fruehstueck bereitete, fand ich 45 Minuten Zeit, ein kleine Gouache Gemaelde anzufertigen. Die Sonne schien schraeg ueber die Rasen meiner Nachbarn, und alles sah so friedlich aus. Ich glaube, ich werde noch mehr in meiner Nachbarschaft malen...

I have tried something new while on vacation, and I absolutely love it!

Ich habe was neues ausprobiert, und finde es ganz toll!

I am an avid reader of James Gurney's blog and he constantly does these amazing little sketches in gouache (which can be handled opaquely and also transparently). So I bought some supplies and tried my little 5"x8" watercolor paper sketch pad along with Holbein little gouache paints and small watercolor brushes while on vacation in Savannah, GA and Myrtle Beach, SC last week.

Ich lese gerne James Gurney's blog und er malt dauernd diese tollen Skizzen mit Gouache (professionale Posterfarbe), mit der man opaque und durchsichtig malen kann. Ich kaufte mir einige kleinen Tuben und Pinsel und Skizzierblock, und konnte damit einige Stunden im Urlaub verbringen. 

I absolutely love this new medium, it's very forgiving, you can cover previous layers very quickly, and it looks awesome with all the little details you can add. Water will revive the paint again, even after it's dry, so that was something new to me, but altogether, very nice to paint with.

Ich finde dieses neue Medium total toll, es vergibt viel, da man ueber fruehere Schichten schoen druebermalen kann, und das Endergebnis einfach toll aussieht und man viele Details zufuegen kann.

QuickDraw in Mount Dora

This Saturday I participated in my first QuickDraw, and it was as much fun as I had thought it would be! There were 35 artists and we all had the same setup: a white vase with 3 palm fronds, enveloped by a silky blue-striped cloth (see setup below).
Am Samstag nahm ich an meinem allerersten QuickDraw (Schnelles Malen) teil, und es machte genausoviel Spass, wie ich erwartet hatte. Es waren 35 Kuenstler, und wir mussten alle dasselbe malen: eine weisse Vase mit 3 Palmwedeln, auf einem gestreiften Seidentuch (siehe Photo unten).

After the setup, we all started at 10am to paint, and had 2 hours exactly to paint, without any talking or interaction amongst ourselves or some of the people coming in. At noon brushes needed to be laid down, and after lunch we gathered at the Mt. Dora Center for the Arts that was the organizer/sponsor, where all paintings were lined up against the walls of the gallery (mine is the 1st one in the 3rd row).
Nachdem jeder bereit war, fingen wir alle gemeinsam um 10 Uhr an, zu malen, und nach genau 2 Stunden musste jeder die Pinsel weglegen. Wir durften waehrend der Malzeit nicht miteinander reden. Nach einem kurzen Mittagessen versammelten wir uns in der Galerie des Kunstclubs (Mt. Dora Center for the Arts), wo alle Gemaelde gegen die Wand gelehnt waren (meines ist das erste in der 3. Reihe).

The judges talked about what caught their eye, and some prizes were handed out. I received an honorable mention, and I was very happy.
Die Juroren redeten kurz darueber, welches Gemaelde und warum ihnen ins Auge gestochen war, und dann wurden einige Preise ausgehaendigt. Ich bekam ein blaues Band fuer den vierten Preis, und war wirklich happy.

I really liked painting within a restricted time limit, and seeing everybody's result, because each artist sees something different, and emphasizes different parts, and of course uses a completely different technique, brush strokes and colors. Most of the artists painted in oils, there were a couple of watercolors, some pencil drawings, and the only pastel got first prize.
Es machte wirklich Spass, in einer bestimmten Zeit mit so vielen anderen genau das selbe zu malen, und am Schluss alle Gemaelde zu sehen, wie jeder was anderes in dem Subjekt sieht, wie jeder verschiedene Techniken, Farben, und Pinselstriche benutzt. Die meisten Kuenstler malten in Oel, einige in Aquarell, ein paar als Skizze, und das einzige Pastelbild bekam den ersten Preis.

All around it was a lot of fun, and I would definitely do it again! Here is my painting.
Es war ein tolles Erlebnis, und ich wuerde es auf jeden Fall wieder mitmachen. Hier ist mein Gemaelde.

Cool Bug

Lots has happened in this long time that I haven't posted.
Soviel ist seit letztem Mal passiert!

I also finished my first cool collage painting with the new technique I learned last month. It's 20"x20", a cool VW bug that I photographed in DeLand recently. Its original color was teal, but it  has many rust spots which is not good for the owner, but great for me: more texture and color!
Und nun habe ich mein erstes cooles Collagegemaelde angefertigt, mit der neuen Technik, die ich letzten Monat gelernt hatte. Das Gemaelde ist 50cm x 50cm auf Holz, ein toller alter VW Kaefer, den ich vor kurzem in DeLand photographiert habe. Er war original seegruen, doch hat nun viele Rostflecken - nicht gut fuer den Besitzer, ich jedoch mag die tolle Texturen und Farben des Rostes!

Es machte viel Spass, so zu malen, und ich legte sogar einen "Rahmen" von Silberblatt auf, damit der Kaefer noch besser zur Geltung kommt. Ich habe schon ein neues Gemaelde angefangen, ein Blick von New York City. Kommt bald! Freue mich ueber Kommentare, wie immer!

New Direction!

Wow, what a workshop! I am so excited - I'm busting. I just took a 2-day workshop last weekend with local artist Christine Peloquin, who does mixed media portraits. I am so glad I took these lessons, I think I want to take my art into a whole new direction. I will still do plein airs in oils, but I will try to do more studio paintings in this new style - collaging different fibers and materials as an underbase, sketching the main parts in charcoal, and then painting in glazes in acrylics over it.
Wow, was fuer ein Wochenende! Ich bin so froh, dass ich diesen Workshop mit Kuenstlerin Christine Peloquin mitgemacht habe. Sie kreiert gemischte Mediengemaelde fuer Portraits. I glaube, dass meine Kunst eine neue Richtung einschlagen wird, so toll finde ich diese Methode!
Ich werde immer noch Plein Air Szenen in Oel malen, doch mehr Gemaelde im Studio fertigbringen in dieser Technik - mit verschidenen Stoffen und Papieren eine Basis als Collage kleben, dann mit Kohle die grossen Formen skizzieren, und dann mit weichen Acrylic-Farben in einigen duennen Schichten druebermalen.

I did these 2 small fruit paintings first, and then after an unsuccessful flower painting (I really dislike painting organic details!) I went back to my beloved architecture and left it kind of wild in color and texture. I really love the technique, the interesting shapes and materials, and the great texture the underlying collage provides to the following painting. I would love to hear your comments.

Ich malte erst diese 2 kleinen Obstgemaelde, und dann, nach einem nicht gerade erfolgreichen Blumengemaelde (ich mag wirklich nicht gern organische Details malen), ging ich zurueck zu meiner geliebten Architektur. Ich malte diese 2 lokalen Szenen von Daytona Beach und liess sie ein bisschen wild und crazy. Ich finde diese Technik wirklich toll mit ihren interessanten Formen und Materialien, und der tollen Textur, die ich unter dem eigentlichen Gemaelde dadurch kriege. Ich wuerde mich ueber Kommentare sehr freuen.

Painting at Epcot March 2015

Ah, what a weekend! I just came back from painting at Epcot in Orlando. As usual, it was a great time. This was my fourth time participating in the Arts in the Garden during the Flower and Garden Festival.
We had great rooms at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, where many African animals like zebras, antelopes and giraffes were grazing right outside your balcony.
Was fuer ein Wochenende! Ich bin gerade vom Malen in Epcot, Orlando zurueckgekommen, wo ich wieder im jaehrlichen Flower and Garden Festival teilgenommen habe. We wurden in einem tollen Disney Hotel (Animal Kingdom Lodge) untergebracht, wo wilde Tier, wie Zebras, Antilopen, Strausse und Giraffen direkt vor'm Fenster herumwanderten.

After the initial reception dinner the 16 plein air artists were excited to start painting on Friday morning. Unfortunately it started storming in the late afternoon and we had to break it off early. I did one nice painting of the San Marcus Plaza in Showcase Italy (my second time in that country) and a sketch.
Nach dem abendlichen Empfang mit Dinner waren wir 16 Plein Air Maler bereit, am Freitag morgen mit dem Malen anzufangen. Leider fing es an zu regnen am Spaetnachmittag und wir wurden frueher als geplant zurueck zum Hotel geschickt. Ich malte am Morgen ein Bild vom Markusplatz in Italien, wo ich dieses Jahr stationiert war, und eine kleine Zeichnung.

Saturday started unseasonably chilly and windy, but at least it was sunny. I managed to do 2 great paintings, one out on the boulevard looking towards Showcase America, and then one around the corner from my favorite I did 2 years ago. They will make a nice set.
Am Samstagmorgen war es sehr kuehl und windig, aber schoen sonnig. Ich malte 2 schoene Bilder, eine draussen am grossen Boulevard, der die verschiedenen "Laender" verbindet, und ein anderes am Nachmittag, das um die Ecke rum von meinem Lieblingsgemaelde vom vorigen Jahr war. Nun habe ich ein schoenes Set.

 

  

Welcome In - 11"x14"  oil on masonite  ---  Sunny Solitude - 11"x14" (2012)

The first day, Austin, my fiance, was with me and enjoyed the park, and on Sat and Sun my daughter Kirsten joined me as a helper. I met several people I knew, and also got a chance to chat with many of the visitors. It's always nice to talk with kids and teens about painting and what they like in art.
Am ersten Tag war mein Verlobter Austin mit mir im Park, und am Samstag und Sonntag kam meine Tochter Kirsten vorbei, um mir zu hlefen. Ich traf etliche Leute, die ich kannte, und schwatzte auch viel mit Touristen. Es ist immer schoen, mit Kindern und Teenagers ueber Kunst und Malen zu reden.

Sunday was again a very nice and sunny day, it couldn't have been more perfect. I did more sketching with pen and a color wash, and finished 2 more paintings. In the morning I sold one of my paintings from 2 years ago to a very excited young man, who presented it to his girlfriend.
Am Sonntag war es schoen warm und sonnig, es konnte nicht besser sein. Ich skizzierte wieder ein paar Szenen, und malte noch 2 Gemaelde. Am Morgen kaufte ein sehr begeisterter junger Mann eines meiner Bilder vom letzten Jahr, und gab es dann seiner Freundin.

About 20 minutes before the finish on Sunday evening I sold the painting I did on Friday, having to add two teenagers to the couple I had painted on the plaza to make the visit of a family of 4 memorable. They were just about as excited as I was. I had never sold anything at this event, and this time two nice paintings! I was stoked, and am looking forward to next year again.
20 Minuten bevor wir einpacken sollten, verkaufte ich das Bild vom Freitag, musste jedoch die zwei Soehne der Familie schnell reinmalen. Sie waren ganz begeistert, und ich auch, denn ich hatte noch nie was in Epcot verkauft. Ich freue mich schon wieder auf naechstes Jahr!
